KNIL Boforses

Thanks:

Those 16 80mm L50 were assembled by Wilton-Fijenoord.

That a further 20 were actually delivered amazes me, I have found so far only 24 in service in total. There were however some modern 75mm L55 guns in service (naval/coastal/dual purpose). Could there have been a mix-up?

I am really astonished to see that more than a hundred 40mms were delivered. I, like you, have never found more than around 40 pieces in service...
Dont get me wrong Stellan, I am not questioning your research, but we see time and time again that early KNIL historians have done badly in naming all equipment in service....on the other hand the US army reports at the time suggest the same low figures - was KNIL playing a game with its potential allies? Cant believe that...

Bofors Guns for KNIL

October 25 2007, 10:54 AM

80 mm AA guns L/50 M/1935 (24 identified in NEI)
8 ordered 20 Feb 1935 delivery before 25 May 1936. Fixed.
16 ordered 12 Dec 1936 delivery before 15 Aug 1938. Fixed.
12 ordered 12 Dec 1936 delivery before 15 Jun 1939. Mobile.

I think that it is only the 24 fixed that have been identified in KNIL Order of Battle. So there could have been extant 3 mobile Btys of each 4 guns.

16 ordered 17 Dec 1938 delivery before 1 Jun 1941. At least 8 of these guns never reached Java. 8 were placed under embargo in Sweden early 1940. Perhaps the restant 8 was never made.

40 mm AA guns L/60 M/36 (44 identified in NEI)
72 ordered 12 Dec 1936 delivery before 15 Dec 1939. Fixed.
32 ordered 12 Dec 1936 delivery before 15 Dec 1939. Mobile.

Of these 16 were placed under embargo in Sweden 2 Dec 1939. These were KNIL guns.

Another 4 fixed guns were placed under embargo 4 Jan 1940 followed by 28 unknown type on 26 Jan 2940 and 4 on 24 May 1940. Finally 16 fixed 30 May 1940. It is however unclear if these guns were made for KNIL or NL. Bofors sometimes used the label "Holland" also for KNIL. Bofors also made little difference between fixed army guns and navy guns.

12 mobile ordered 17 Dec 1938 delivery before 15 May 1940. These were placed under embargo in Sweden 30 Aug 1940. These were KNIL-guns.

Guns ordered in Bofors were sometimes made in Belgium, Hungary and Poland.

So that's very interesting

There may have been 40 heavy AA guns (36 80mm and 4 105mm), all Bofors!

Of the 104 40mms ordered in 1936, maximum 68 may have been impounded leaving
46 delivered.

Your new data must be correct, thank you!

On the other hand: of the Dutch Army's 52 ordered only 12 were delivered, leavin 40 impounded by Sweden?

Dutch 40 mm

Of the 52 guns ordered for NL i think only 12 were made in Sweden. The rest were most probably laid out by Bofors for production in Poland and Hungary.

For example guns bought by Norway in Bofors were in fact produced by FN in Belgium.
