Travis Gibbons scored two goals in overtime on Saturday as the Owen Sound Quantum Properties NorthStars held on for a 9-8 win over the Oakville Titans and a two-game lead in their Ontario Senior B lacrosse semifinal playoff series.
His second goal came with just over two minutes left on the clock, thrilling a good-sized crowd at a very humid Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Owen Sound will now go to Oakville next Friday night with a chance to sweep the best-of-five series. The NorthStars are looking for their sixth consecutive appearance in the Senior B championship final.
Adam Jones had a hat trick and four points while Nate Sanderson also scored a pair of goals. Rob Milnes contributed a goal and three assists and Mat MacLeod rounded out the scoring. Jamie Grimoldby chipped in five assists.
Oakville's scorers were Jeff Sehl with two goals and Ken Coulson, Stu Gordon, Kyle Aquin, Nic Grasby, Callen Kitson and league scoring champ Shane Scott, who also added four assists.
Scott Komer was the winning netminder, stopping 42 shots. Oakville's J. Preece made 52 saves in a losing cause.
The score was tied 2-2 after one period and the NorthStars led 4-3 after two. But they gave up a 7-5 lead with less than five minutes left in the third period, and regulation time ended with the score knotted at 7-7.
Gibbons struggled earlier in the game and took a couple of penalties out of frustration, so he says he felt he needed to contribute when the game was on the line.
Head coach Brandon Sanderson says he's not surprised Gibbons filled that role, but he adds he has so much character and offensive potential on his club, anybody could have broken out and it would not have been a surprise.
Sanderson says he doesn't expect Oakville to go down without a fight, and the NorthStars won't make the mistake of assuming they've clinched the series.
If necessary, Game 4 is set for next Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Bayshore.
