"We have visitors, sometimes," she said sadly, bowing her head again. The hair draped forward, and she melted, only to revive closer to the shoreline. Propping her elbows on the sandy bottom, her hips rose to the surface behind her and she smiled quietly into the water between herself and the newcomer.
"But they don't stay long. We sing to the trees, we sing to the birds, we sing to the rocks. But no one ever stays..."
It was impossible to tell if she was crying, but her expression was mournfull. Elbows under the water, against the sand, her hands crossed over each other just under the water's surface in front of her, and she leant forwards slightly.
"Will you stay, just a little while? We are so lonely...we'll sing you another song?" | |
