| 2 goals in last 5 minutes saw Stanwell FC come from 1-0 down to march into the Semi Final of the Premier Cup on Sunday at the recreation ground against Acton FC. With the game looking like going Acton’s way a Jay Coombs header on 85 minutes seemed to be taking the game into extra time but with 40 seconds remaining Anthony Eggington struck the all important winner.
A very strong and talented Acton side had made all the early running and on 15 minutes took the lead with a fine lob from Steven Loveridge. This seemed to bring Stanwell to life and from then on the game could have gone either way. With strong defensive displays from Paul Thornton, Stuart Orkney, Michael Edghill and Ray Randal, Stanwell soaked up everything that was thrown at them and when Acton did get through Steve Honey was on hand with some fantastic goalkeeping. The midfield was superb with Joe Johnson and Jamie Milne causing havoc on the wings and Dale Webb and Andrew Sherwood with commanding displays in the centre of the park. Stanwell had other chances to equalise with Anthony Eggington, Jamie Milne, Jay Coombs and Joe Johnson all coming close. On 70 minutes Stanwell lost Ray Randal with a knee injury and on came Chris Baker who had an immediate effect, his clever feet in the box played a neat ball to Jamie Milne who whipped in a superb cross for Jay Coombs to powerfully head home which sent the Stanwell faithfull crazy. Stanwell now had the upper hand and the fitness was starting to show (must be all that running clunk!) and in injury time with 40 seconds left to play Jamie Milne slipped through Anthony Eggington who’s left foot shot rolled into the right hand corner the send the crowd wild. There was no time for a shell shocked Acton to respond as almost immediately from the kick off the referee blew the full time whistle. A special mention must go to Vince Brimacombe and Lee Smither for tactical awareness and motivating the team on the day. Bring on the Semi Final.
Next week Stanwell are at home to Barnes Albion in the league and the week after another Cup Quarter Final in the Ace Awards Cup away to Hayes End.
