Thanks for giving us the opportunity to fight these awful schemes. Woking has recently introduced it in trial areas and insist it is popular yet no-one I have spoken to is in favour of having general waste left for two weeks or more before collection.
Hi again Jo, This is really weird as 84% of the residents in the trial area are in favour of the scheme continuing. Do you only speak to the other 16% of your community?
I TAKE IT THAT THE 84% OF SUPPORT FOR THE SYSTEM IS THE COUNCILS SPIN, AND IF IT IS ANYTHING LIKE THE LIES (OOPS) SORRY SPIN GIVEN OUT BY SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL IT IS SILLY TO BELIEVE THE COUNCILS MUST THINK THAT ALL THE RATEPAYERS ARE GULLABLE NOT JUST A FEW.
In my neck of the woods south gloucestershire, the council has adopted the policy of removing bages from the bins if the lids are open.
We are then left with the situation thet bins are returned to us already containing rubbish making it harder to get through the next fortnight, i dread to think what will happen at christmas time.
This is a real problem for residents. Carrying over rubbish until the next collection means that it will be at least three weeks old by that time. Not everyone has transport to take any extra rubbish to the tip.
Our record for the Christmas period was over 4 weeks between our general waste collections. We appreciate that refuse collectors need time off but this situation would not have occurred when we were on weekly collections.
I understand that south gloucestershire council are suspending the green bin collection over the christmas period. Silly realy when the only thing they collect in the green bin over winter is cardboard the main time for cardboard waste during the year is (you guest it) CHRISTMAS. Just shows what fools we have running the council. There is a waste forum council meeting on the 2nd september at thornbury council offices at 2pm the more people attending to voice their objections to the twin bin system the better.
Thanks to everyone who has contacted me in the past two+ weeks. We now have supporters in Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, South Cambridgeshire and South Gloucestershire.
Your comments have made very interesting reading and will all be included when the final petition is ready for presentation.
If you know of any friends, family or neighbours who wish to join us please pass on the website details (hopefully many will have PC access).
I agree! It's about time people started listening to the residents who have to live with this appauling scheme. Thank you so much for creating this helpful and ACCURATE site. Keep up the good work!
I would like to add my voice to this campaign - I live in Pembury, nr Tunbridge Wells, and we have the ludicrous system in the village. We have seen rats in our garden, and there is a huge increase in flies and other such flying insects around our rubbish sacks. REINSTATE WEEKLY COLLECTIONS!
instead of complaining people should be asking for better recycling facilities.at some shopping centres you can take plastic bottles.councils should collect them .i take a black bag full to a plastic bottle bank every 3/4 weeeks.it takes me 10 mins on my way somewhere to do this . last week i did this and a lady was there doing the same and we both agreed most people cannot be bothered to do this .i have friends who up until recently threw newspapers in the bin .someone said to me their green wheelie bin looks untidy in the garden .dont worry about the enviroment as long as my garden looks ok,how selfish .i think the trial periods should have been longer to iron out problems like bigger families/flats
continuing we have 4 people in our house and recycle all we can .our black bin is not full after 2 weeks .we cannot keep filling up holes in the ground .this must be a health hazard.if we were able to put food leftovers in both bins this would eradicate a lot of problems .do you think that going back to weekly collections would make some people recycle less .please dont think iam criticising your campaign its just that i think recycling is a good thing and this seems to get forgotten
You have made some very valid points. This campaign is not aimed at reducing levels of recycling. I have been an avid supporter of recycling for more than 10 years. I regularly visit bottle banks, clothes re-use facilities and local tips with garden waste. I'm far from perfect but try my hardest!
I cannot compost kitchen waste because I have had rats in my garden - I regret not being able to do so. Recycling is all about education and councils appear to want to force people into complying by introducing fortnightly collections.
It is not about taking more to landfill/incineration but it should be taken more frequently. The temptation to contaminate recycling materials with general waste is too great for some householders and so complete lorry loads have to go to waste. This fact is not well-publicised but it is certainly a problem.
"MP alleges dishonesty over fortnightly rubbish collection" CheshireOnline 30/07/04

Mike Wall MP (Labour, Weaver Vale) on the 22nd July 2004, raised the question of fortnightly collections in the House of Commons:
"He said the response to Vale Royal's consultation exercise, asking people whether they would be willing to take part in a kerbside recycling scheme, was an overwhelming 'yes' "
"He continued: 'However, the local authority did not clearly spell out - it was mentioned only in the small print - that the ordinary domestic refuse collection would be reduced from a weekly collection to a fortnightly one.' "
"There is uproar in my constituency about the decision."
