Preschool update-- sort of...

Mitchell had a better day at school last Wed. I talked to him before he went about listening, and he promised he'd try. I was very anxious the whole time he was there, worrying about his behavior, but when I picked him up the teacher reported no problems, and said he'd had a good day.

She mentioned again the book on consequences that she wanted me to read. I said fine... and pulled out my stack of papers for her. She was a little taken aback and said that she knew Mitchell had some sensory issues, but she didn't want to treat him differently from the other children or let him get out of responsibilities. I said that wasn't what I wanted at all, but that she might find the information interesting, and at least know where we were coming from. So she agreed to read it (and then didn't give me anything to read after all, kinda strange.)

Anyway-- today was another school day, but Mitchell woke up with a cough. So I called to tell the teacher he wouldn't be coming. She thanked me for the information I had given her, said she found it helpful and thought she might be able to use it with the other children as well.

Sooo... we will see how it goes next week. With any luck Mitchell will show some improvement and we can put the whole thing behind us. But I feel a little better about the situation today than I did last week.

Thanks-- Aimee

That all sounds very positive

I had the feeling that while she had been very tactless she may not have been so close-minded that some new information would be rejected. I'm happy to hear that it went the way it did and if she's going to try some of the things on all of the kids it won't make Mitchell seem so singled out.

Let us know how things progess, and I hope he's feeling well soon!

this way. It pays to be proactive instead of reactive! Great for you!

Glad to note she is interested in applying this with all her students. Next time you go, maybe mentioning the book S'cool Moves for Learning, by Debi Heiberger would be a good idea.

Here is the link to her website and I have the book - it applies the sensory integration movement in the school setting in a way that teaachers can easily just do - lesson plans and great supporting documentation.
