Shame on those who don't understand her perceived need for this, and on those who suggest she resign her Vancouver school trustee position. At a recent information session at our daughter's preschool on the transition into kindergarten, I was surprised to hear a number of public schools espousing a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and name-calling. By contrast, the private-school representatives seemed to promote teaching their students how to best deal with the situation rather than isolate them in a protected environment. I don't promote arming elementary students as a way to deal with bullies, but I admire the school trustee for taking responsibility for defending her family. While it would be very easy to ignore or deny that bullies are out there, one only has to look at some of the world's leaders to realize that we'd better learn to take care of ourselves before others decide how they will take care of us.
