For both:

Make sure the rails on the frame and in the slide are free of gunk and lightly lubed--I use a Q-tip with breakfree and make sure it's mostly clean with the last pass.

Make sure the firing pin is free to move forward without feeling gritty--just press on it with a ball point pen. Unless you shoot a lot or have let the gun get a major exposure to dust or pocket lint this shouldn't be a problem.

I'm one of those guys that prefers guns to have as little lube as possible: if you must lube, just put some on the rails and around the barrel where it meets the slide/bushing.

Press down on the magazine follower to make sure it moves smoothly. If not, the magazine may have to be disassembled and cleaned, as before, I'd avoid lube and just get it clean and dry.

As for cleaning in general. I tend to use just breakfree CLP (cleaner lubricant and protectant), q-tips, a toothbrush, nylon brush, bore patches, and a clean cloth like an old T-shirt. I don't do much with the barrel except brush it out and run a patch or two down the length with the last one being dry so it clears out any remaining excess solvent.

When assembled, make sure the safety, slide, hammer, and trigger all move correctly.
