Only the military and police should have guns?????by nancyOnce Again, in a Gun-Free Zone...: The top commander at Fort Hood
is crediting a civilian police officer for stopping the shooting rampage that killed 13 people at the Texas post. Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said Friday that Fort Hood police Sgt. Kimberly Munley and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire Thursday afternoon. Cone said Munley shot the gunman four times despite being shot herself. Officials said Munley was in stable condition. Cone said, "It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer." Cone also said he was inspired by a woman who helped carry a wounded victim and used her blouse as a tourniquet, then later realized she'd been shot in the hip. The suspected gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, is hospitalized on a ventilator. (Military personnel are generally disarmed on their own bases unless they are participating in live-fire training. Armed Teenage boy scars off two home intrudersby NancyA pair of crooks picked the wrong Milford [MI]
home to break into. They weren't attacked by the family dog or confronted by the police. Instead, they were confronted by a 13-year old boy. Josh Cichy came home Friday night to two men trying to rob his house. That's when the teen went straight for his spotlight, an airsoft pistol and his shotgun to scare them away. Cichy says he first shined the spotlight in their eyes then fired a warning shot. The thieves took off running. Fox 2's Simon Shaykhet spoke with the teen about how he defended his home. Click on the video player to the left to watch his story. (According to the video, he fired one Airsoft pellet, striking one of the burglars in the face, then fired a warning shot into the air with the shotgun.) http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/Teen_Scares_Off_Burgulars The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Naked 91-year-old holds burglar at gunpoint September 19, 2009 7:12 PM Peter Schallerby Armed citizens stop crime!Naked 91-year-old holds burglar at gunpoint
September 19, 2009 7:12 PM Peter Schaller LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- This next homeowner is a force to be reckoned with. He's 91, he was buck naked, but he and his dog decided to go after a would be burglar. He held the man at gunpoint until police arrived. Deputies say they found the would be burglar on the back porch by the pool drunk and trembling, probably not how he thought it would all go down. He got more than he bargained for when he decided to mess with this elderly man and his trusty rottweiler mix. 91-year-old Robert Thompson and his 5-year-old dog Rett tag-teamed a thug trying to break into their Lake Worth home Friday night. Thompson said, "I think the guy was scared to death, he was screaming." Thompson jumped out of bed, totally naked, went to go check things out with Rett by his side. He said, "I started to let him out the door and he was so anxious he got caught in the door." According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office 26-year-old Jose Pascual was the man on the porch. Rett pinned Pascual, but this purple heart World War Two Veteran wanted back-up. Thompson said, "I went in and got my cell phone and dialed 911 and got my gun." Thompson says Pascual was coming toward him so he fired a shot. Authorities say he held the drunk intruder at gunpoint until deputies arrived, but he's giving his best bud Rett all the credit for the happy ending. He said, "He's the hero." Pascual was arrested, Thompson was taken to the hospital. One of the shots he fired ricocheted giving him a minor battle wound. He hopes the bad guys learned a lesson about messing the boys at 504 North C Street. "If anyone violates my home they better be careful, that's all I got to say," said Thompson. Thompson tells us that he has been living alone since his wife passed away 10 years ago, and that having Rett around makes life easier. The suspect in this case is facing burglary charges. |
FLA: Armed Homeowner stops car theft!by NancyOops, Wrong Car: Two burglars attempting to steal a car from a
Brevard County [FL] home were held at gunpoint by the homeowners. Matthew Clark, 20, and Justin Sheppard, 19, are facing several charges including burglary and grand theft. Authorities say the pair was burglarizing a home near Titusville on Karen Drive when the homeowners confronted them with a 12-gauge shotgun. The woman and her son held the two until police arrived. Clark and Sheppard are now being held on $5,000 bonds. (Alls well that ends well but, had the car thieves been armed and prepared to fight, the outcome might not have been worth whatever portion of the vehicles value was not covered by insurance. With no immediate threat to life or limb, sometimes its best to call 911.) http://www.cfnews13.com/News/Local/2009/9/16/burglars_held_up_by_\ homeowners.html The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
AZ: Oops wrong houseby NancyOops, Wrong House, Further Details from Arizona: Two teenage boys who officers say were caught burglarizing a Chandler [AZ] home on Wednesday admitted to a number of other burglaries resulting in the recovery of stolen property, Chandler police said Friday One of the boys was caught inside the home of James Caryl in the 800 block of West Elgin Street, about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. Caryl arrived home to be told by his son and neighbor that the pair were inside and police had been called. Caryl's 13-year-old son was home alone when the boys knocked on the front door. After he looked out the window and realized he did not know them, he didn't answer the door. Caryl's son then saw the two boys, ages 16 and 17, walk around the house and go to the back door before forcing their way inside, police said. Caryl's son ran out the front door and to a neighbor's house, where they called 911. Before police arrived, Caryl said he would take care of the incident himself and went inside and [saic] to retrieve his gun, according to police. While in his home, he apprehended one of the boys at gunpoint, and the other one jumped out of the second-story window, according to police (Fools rush in With police on the way and no family members inside the home, it doesnt seem to me that it was worth the risk of the homeowner clearing his own home, particularly if he wasnt even carrying a gun when he entered. Then again, perhaps he realized that his handgun was not properly secured inside the home) http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/143982 The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Sheriff Tim Evinger of Klamath County says 24-year-old Calvin Lee Brown used a pair of 18-inch wooden handles to break Monte Rompal's bedroom window, prompting the 77-year-old man to fire a shot. Evinger says deputies later found Brown at a nearby house - asleep and drunk with a bullet wound to his left upper arm. Congratulations, MSNBC, you have now set a new journalistic LOW,by AnonymousCongratulations, MSNBC, you have now set a new journalistic LOW,
showing that you really have the art of propaganda down pat. At a recent Arizona town hall meeting with President Obama, there was one person carrying a rifle. It was a black gun-owner with an AR-15 on his shoulder standing with other gun owners outside the town hall building. The media almost melted down, as is their tendency when it comes to lawfully carried guns. In their story, MSNBC shows only carefully cropped video of that black gun-owner so that you could not tell his skin color, but only see his gun. They then switch to video of a white gun-owner being interviewed by a reporter. While there is plenty of video to be found of the black gun owner talking to reporters elsewhere, MSNBC does not use any of it. Why did MSNBC crop that video? Because the topic was about how gun-carrying protesters at the town hall meetings are RACISTS!!! You see, the rifle was eye-catching, but having a black man carrying it simply wouldn't do for MSNBC's purposes, so they fixed that little problem. Anyway, I literally jumped out of my chair when I saw this video. I don't suggest watching it while eating or drinking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYKQJ4-N7LI |
Glad to see itbyThanks for the link. It's sad that the black man in that video clip was labeled a "white racist" simply because he chose to exercise his Constitutional rights to keep and bear arms. On the brighter side of it all is that by labeling him as such, then with the truth coming out, a lot of attention was drawn to him and what he had to say. I applaud him for the courage that he displayed in standing up for his rights and exercising them while so many others do not. He set an excellent example of the type of American every person should strive to be. |

Bad Trip Ends at Wrong House: KYby nancyBad Trip Ends at Wrong House: A man was shot and killed in
McCracken County [KY] after police say he tried to break into a family's home around 2:00 a.m. The family woke to the sound of the alarm system, indicating the door to the attached garage had been opened. The homeowner went outside to investigate, when he heard his wife inside screaming. He ran back into the home where his wife told him the intruder, later identified as 18-year-old Andrew Caleb Barnett, was inside their attached garage attempting to get into the home through a wooden door with a window, according to police. The homeowner reportedly yelled several times that he had a gun, telling Barnett not to come inside. However, Barnett continued to make advances toward the man. Police say the homeowner fired one shot at Barnett, hitting him in the arm, and going into his chest area. Barnett apparently fell to the floor but got back up fighting the homeowner, at one point, biting him in the arm. The fight continued through the home and eventually back into the garage. When police arrived they arrested Barnett and transported him to Western Baptist Hospital for the gunshot, but he ultimately died. The McCracken County Police Department reports the 18-year-old was under the influence of Psilocybin Mushrooms, or "Magic Mushrooms" as they're called on the street, and thought he was inside his own home. At one point, he even called the homeowner "Dad" http://www.kfvs12.com/Global/story.asp?S=10818777 |

He was protecting us, said Jaime Zaldivar, who has lived next door to August Peters, 74, for several years on Carona near Wilcrest. Peters pulled in front of the home about 6:30 a.m. when he noticed another car drive past and park along the curb across the street, police said. Soon after Peters got out of his car, Martin Baltazar, 18, came up to him and jammed a knife against his throat, Houston police said. He said, Give me your car or I'll kill you,' said Victor Senties, an HPD spokesman. Peters reached into his car for a pistol. He began firing, with at least one round striking Baltazar in the abdomen, Houston police said. The wounded Baltazar fled across the street, forcing his way into the home where Lui s Ramos lives with his wife and brother. Baltazar ran through the house terrifying Ramos' wife in the bedroom as he sought to escape. He said, Don't touch me. Don't touch me. Move,' Ramos said. I was nervous. I didn't know what to do in this case. Ramos said Baltazar finally found the kitchen but was unable to open the locked back door. He took a big chair and he hit the window, Ramos said. The bleeding Baltazar climbed through the shattered window but apparently had a problem holding up his baggy trousers, Ramos said. He left his pants in the kitchen, he said. Baltazar vaulted the backyard fence but was captured moments later by Houston police a few blocks away from where he was shot. He was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was in fair condition, officials said later Thursday. Baltazar has been charged with aggravated robbery with bail set at $30,000. No other injuries were reported. August Peters could not be reached for comment later Thursday. His neighbors described him as a quiet man, friendly person. He's a good man. He never looks for problems, Zaldivar said. Residents say they are concerned about crime in their neighborhood. Zaldivar and Ramos both said their homes have been burglarized. NEWS RELEASEby NancyNEWS RELEASE
RASMUSSEN POLL CONFIRMS AMERICANS FEAR OBAMA GUN CONTROL AGENDA -- CCRKBA BELLEVUE, WA A new Rasmussen poll reveals that 57 percent of American citizens believe gun sales are up over the past several months because of widespread fears that the government will tighten restrictions on gun ownership. The poll results confirm what weve been saying, noted Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. American citizens are fearful that the Obama administration and a Democrat-controlled Congress will pass new laws to further erode the individual right to own firearms. This concern was further enhanced by yesterdays ruling in Minnesota that far left anti-gunner Al Franken should be seated as a U.S. Senator representing that state, giving Democrats a 60-member majority. The Rasmussen telephone survey found that only 23 percent of the respondents believe gun sales have risen due to concerns about rising crime. Twenty-one percent are not sure. The poll also revealed that 63 percent of male Americans and 51 percent of women believe gun sales are linked to concerns about new gun control schemes. Another finding is that 65 percent of Republicans and 66 percent of those not affiliated with either major political party think booming gun sales are connected to fears about increased government restrictions. Americans realize that despite all of the campaign rhetoric, Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are waiting for the right moment to spring new gun control measures, Gottlieb stated. There is little doubt they would like to renew the ban on semiautomatic sport-utility rifles, place limits on the number of firearms someone may purchase, and maybe institute some kind of licensing and registration scheme, as Pelosi hinted during an appearance on ABCs Good Morning America. Wherever these measures have been tried on the local level, they have invariably failed to prevent or reduce violent crime. The Clinton gun ban failed. One-gun-a-month schemes have failed. How many times do you have to fail at something before you reach the inescapable conclusion that your plan isnt going to work, he questioned. The Rasmussen poll affirms that Americans are waking up to the Obama-Pelosi agenda, and they are stocking up for what they think is an inevitable attack on gun rights. Eight Republicans Help Confirm a Hard-Core Gun Bannerby nancyEight Republicans Help Confirm a Hard-Core Gun Banner
-- And how to keep Senators from "spinning" their support for gun control Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org "Too much work [was] left undone. After a few sleepless nights, I wrote for myself a list of issues on which I needed to do more in the years ahead. One of those issues was global regulation of small arms." -- Harold Hongju Koh (2001) Friday, June 26, 2009 Imagine that. The Senate confirmed this week, by a vote of 62-35, a gun banner who stays up at night thinking of ways to impose more gun control upon American citizens. Harold Koh is that gun grabber, and he was confirmed yesterday to be the Legal Adviser at the State Department. On Wednesday, Senate Republicans attempted to kill the Koh nomination with a filibuster -- until eight of them crossed the aisle to help Democrats confirm Koh. The back-stabbing Senators are: Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Mel Martinez (R-FL), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and George Voinovich (R-OH). Once the filibuster was thwarted, Koh's nomination passed easily. The vote on final passage can be viewed at:http://tinyurl.com/m4m2f5 Koh is eager to assume his post at the State Department, having lamented that there is only so much that can be done from the outside to push gun control treaties, and that ultimately we need people like him in positions of power. The chief lawyer for the State Department is just the position someone like him needs to push more gun control through international treaties. GOA will continue watching for any attempt by the Obama administration to foist an international gun control treaty upon the citizens of the U.S. Please stay tuned. Don't Let Your Senators Escape the Heat of the Spotlight! If you have been watching the news, you have no doubt seen stories on the health care debate. This is the topic de jour on Capitol Hill, and Congress is ramping up to vote on a bill in a few weeks. Last week, GOA alerted you to the fact that the whole health care issue has become a Trojan Horse for gun control, among other things. However, there are detractors who claim that the current health care debate will have nothing to do with guns. For example, GOA has been "informed" that a search of the TeddyCare bill does not turn up the word "guns," and that the word "database" is seen only a few times. Hmm, if your Senator's office gives you that as a response, then tell them not to be so lazy and naive. One needs to do more than type in a word search in order to analyze legislation. The database was set up under section 3001(c)(3)(i) of the stimulus bill. But the Kennedy bill allows for sweeping new regulations, which make it potentially impossible for any doctor to refuse to enter your records under the current section 13112 exemption. Many things you tell your doctor in the privacy of his office could affect your right to own a firearm. And just because anti-gun zealot Ted Kennedy doesn't notify us up front of his anti-gun intentions doesn't mean they don't exist. Frankly, we got this same garbage in connection with the Veterans Disarmament Act (officially known as the NICS Improvement Act), where the anti-gunners took away the guns of 150,000 veterans through language which was not explicit. Before the bill was signed into law last year, some detractors even claimed that because the NICS bill did not mention the word "veterans," we must have been wrong to suggest that the bill would disarm vets! Well, guess what? The disarmament which was already occurring before President Bush signed the legislation into law last year is now occurring with a vengeance under the Obama administration. (In fact, GOA members should be looking for an upcoming mailing which will give you postcards to send in support of an important bill -- introduced by Sen. Burr of North Carolina -- which will protect veterans from the fangs of the Veterans Disarmament Act.) The point is, no Senate staffer should ever give you an opinion on a bill unless he has read the entire code that the bill will be amending. Nor should they ignore the potential for an Obama administration to abuse any particular piece of legislation. Remember how the RICO Act, originally enacted to help combat the Mafia, was later used to crack down on legitimate banks and peaceful pro-life protesters? The original RICO Act never used the word "abortion," but that didn't stop overzealous prosecutors from going after the non-violent protestors. And who would have thought, when the original Brady law was passed in 1993, that it would be used to keep people with outstanding traffic tickets... or couples with marriage problems... or military vets with nightmares from buying guns? After all, the Brady law never mentioned those people groups, and yet the law has been used over the past 15-plus years to deny gun rights to those very people. Reading legislation is not a job for the timid or the lazy. If staffers in your Senate offices aren't willing to read current bills IN THE LIGHT OF EXISTING LAWS -- and to do the research necessary to compile this information -- then politely encourage them to get another line of work. |

FAYETTE COUNTY, TN - A Fayette County homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Monday morning. Investigators with the Fayette County Sheriff's Department say the dead man is the homeowner's neighbor. The shooting happened around 1:00 a.m. in the 400-block of Bellgrove Road off Highway 64 just outside Oakland city limits. The homeowner, 63 year-old Willie Woods, says he woke up to the sounds of his wife and daughter frantically yelling for him. A man, they told him, was on their front porch trying to break in through the picture window. "I ordered him not to come in the house," says Woods, "and he was standing there on the porch screaming something, I don't know what it was. And I kept telling him not to come in." Woods says his porch light wasn't on and it was hard to see. But he could tell the guy had something hard in his hand and he kept hitting the window with it. Woods says he learned later that the intruder was using a rake to pound on the glass. "I went back and got my gun and came back into the room," says Woods, "and he broke at me. He asked me what I was going to do and he broke at me, right through the window. He walked right through the window and so I shot. I fired about three shots." Investigators say the intruder was hit in the head and died at the scene. Delois Harris says the man on the porch was her cousin, 32 year-old Anthony Webb. Family members describe him as "slow" but say he would never harm anyone. Webb and Willie Woods have been neighbors for years. In fact, Woods went to school with Anthony Webb's father. "They stay right there, baby," Harris says pointing to Webb's house about 150 yards from Woods' home. "He lived right there. He knew that was Anthony. He knew that. Everybody knows Anthony around here. Anthony does not bother anybody. Never has." Woods says he didn't realize it was Anthony coming at him. His only thought was to protect himself and his loved ones. "He broke through my window," says Woods. "I never fired a shot until he got on the inside of the building and lunged at me with some object in his hand. That's when I fired." "He should have called Anthony's father," says Harris, "and asked him to come and get him. He had no right to do what he did." The case is still under investigation but District Attorney Mike Dunavant says it appears to be a "justified" shooting, meaning Mr. Woods won't face any charges. Woods feels bad for Webb's family but insists he had no choice but to fire his .38 revolver. "If I hadn't been there," he says, "I don't what he would have done to my family." Neighbors told Woods that Anthony Webb had stopped by another house, a rental that Woods owns nearby, shortly before the shooting. The men who live inside the home said Webb kept asking for a cigarette before they told him to go. The DA's office is expected to issue a final report on the deadly home invasion on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Two of the intruders then ran from the house past him, got into a silver Honda Civic and drove away, the neighbor said. The third intruder remained inside the house. "They left him behind," the neighbor said. "Then we heard the gunshot." The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
OBAMA’S ANTI-GUN STRATEGY IS TO STACK COURTS, SAYS CCRKBAby NancyNEWS RELEASE
OBAMAS ANTI-GUN STRATEGY IS TO STACK COURTS, SAYS CCRKBA BELLEVUE, WA Failing to get traction for his anti-gun agenda in Congress, Barack Obama is trying instead to stack the federal courts with liberal anti-gunners, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today. President Obamas gun prohibitionist agenda has fallen on deaf ears on Capitol Hill, said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. His administrations attempt to revive the ban on semiautomatic sporting rifles by exploiting the Mexican drug war was a bust. He had to sign legislation allowing guns for personal protection in national parks, even after his Justice Department refused to defend the Interior Department against a lawsuit that prevented an earlier firearms rule from taking effect. But now he is picking judicial nominees that will almost certainly legislate from the bench, he continued. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has already ruled that the Second Amendment does not apply to the states. Weve learned that Sotomayors nomination is supported by ACORN, the publicly-funded anti-gun group that supported a Jersey City gun control ordinance that was struck down by the court. Obamas nomination of David Hamilton to a position on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals is equally troubling, Gottlieb added, because Hamilton reportedly is a former ACORN fundraiser. Even the president once worked with the anti-gun rights ACORN as a leadership trainer. Seventy years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to stack the Supreme Court to push his social agenda, and he failed, Gottlieb recalled. President Obama tried to use his cabinet to rally support for a gun ban renewal and he failed, so now hes planning to stack the courts with anti-gun ACORN nominees. America has had enough Left-wing judicial activism from the federal bench, he concluded. In Judge Sotomayors own words, I dont believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstances. It says what it says. We should do honor to it. That includes honoring the Second Amendment. It does not include manipulating the courts to accomplish from the bench what cannot be achieved through Congress. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
Ind: Armed Homeowner shoots home invadersby NancyEVANSVILLE During his deployment to Iraq with the Indiana National Guard, Travis Coulter started each day thinking he might have to use his weapon in a life-and-death situation.
Despite risky convoys and the threat of insurgent attacks, it never came to that in the war zone. But back home in Evansville, the 21-year-old Coulter found himself having to fire a gun on Wednesday morning when two intruders burst into his East Side home and started attacking his roommate. Police believe it was a robbery attempt. "We were over there for 10 months, and I never had to shoot anybody," Coulter said of his Iraq experience. "I'm back here for four months, and I had to shoot somebody in my own living room." The suspected intruder, Arnett B. Baines, 21, was being treated Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg. His condition was listed as good, although police said he needed surgery and would remain in the hospital for the near future. A second suspect was tentatively identified by police as Shawn Jackson, a black male about 20 years old with a stocky build. He had not been located Wednesday afternoon, said Evansville Police Department spokesman Steve Green. The incident happened about 12:45 a.m. at a Harrison Boulevard home in a neighborhood near Green River Road and the Lloyd Expressway. Coulter said he was home with his girlfriend and his roommate, 21-year-old Alex B. Grisham, when they heard a banging noise coming from the back door. Before long, Coulter said, two men wearing ski masks burst through the door. Grisham threw Coulter a .22-caliber revolver they kept in the living room and was attacked seconds later by one of the men, who pummeled him in the face. Grisham's nose was broken in seven places. Grisham and his attacker separated a moment later, and Coulter took aim and fired, hitting the intruder once in the leg. Both he and the accomplice fled. "I don't know what was going through my head," Coulter said. "Just get those guys out of there or stop them from whatever they were doing. It was clear their intentions were to harm us or rob us." The man who was shot, identified by police as Baines, was found almost immediately after police arrived when they heard him screaming from behind a privacy fence behind the residence, Coulter said. Once he saw him without the ski mask, Coulter said, he recognized Baines as a "friend of a friend" who had been over to the house a couple of times. He said he still doesn't know what motivated the break-in. "We were in the wrong place at the wrong time and knew the wrong people," Coulter said. It marked the second time a group of intruders tried to break into the same house this year. In January, three people attempted to force their way inside, firing two shots when the residents resisted them. Coulter did not live there at the time, although his roommates did. No one was arrested in that case, and Coulter suspects there may be a connection between the two incidents. The case Wednesday also marked the second home invasion robbery attempt that morning in Evansville. Authorities also were investigating an incident shortly after midnight at 756 E. Columbia St., where a man kicked in a side door, pointed a gun at a resident and asked where the money was. The robber fled when he heard the woman's dog, police said. Green said it was unclear whether there was a connection between the two cases Wednesday morning. Reflecting on the incident that happened at his house, Coulter said he plans to "keep a gun handy" whenever he's home. He credited his experience with the National Guard with keeping him calm during the incident and with helping him deal with the stress. But he said being in Iraq never prepared him for anything like what happened. "We trained gaining entry into other houses," he said. "But we never trained for anybody breaking into ours." Armed Pharmicist stops robbery and saves livesby NancyFearing for life, pharmacist kills gunman
Just before walking into Babcock Square Pharmacy, the gunman lurked suspiciously around the parking lot Wednesday morning even moving his car several times before making his move. Carole Ann Aguirre, manager of the neighboring Martha's Mexican Restaurant, said the white Honda lingered enough that her grandson, Christopher, mistook it as that of a relative's and walked up to it. He opened the car door and thought it was his uncle, Aguirre said. But he saw the man had a bandana around his face and was wearing rubber gloves, so he came back in and told us what happened. Aguirre's son-in-law, Charlie Rojas, called police shortly before 10 a.m. to report the suspicious person. But before Rojas could hang up, the gunman had moved his car once more, this time parking it near the pharmacy at Babcock and Huebner roads. Esmeralda Rodriguez, who was walking to her job next door at Natural Health Improvement Center, remembers seeing the light-blue surgical gloves the stranger wore. But, she didn't think more of it as she walked into the health center. About 10 minutes later, Rodriguez heard two loud noises coming from the pharmacy. Moments later, the pharmacy owner's wife, 60-year-old Patricia Wynn, ran into the health center in hysterics. She was so stunned; she just kept saying, We almost got robbed,' Rodriguez said. The stranger who had been loitering in the parking lot had walked into the pharmacy carrying a black revolver and a note demanding the narcotic drug OxyContin and some money, according to authorities. Once inside, the gunman handed the note to a clerk behind the counter, Police Chief William McManus said. The clerk was one of three people inside the pharmacy at the time of the robbery attempt. The others were the pharmacy owner, 62-year-old Bill Wynn, and his wife. The details about what happened next are unclear, but McManus said the clerk was able to inform the pharmacy owner of the attempted robbery. Wynn, who had been robbed before, somehow managed to arm himself with a gun. That's when McManus said the robber uttered his last words: Let's get it on. Police said Wynn reacted quickly, shooting the gunman in the chest. I was scared to death, Wynn later said, declining to comment further. Police arrived to find the gunman, whose identity wasn't released Wednesday, lying on his back in a pool of blood. In his right hand was a cocked revolver. McManus said Wynn wouldn't face any charges in connection with the shooting. He was in fear (for) his life, the chief said. He has a right and state law allows him to defend himself. The dead man wasn't immediately identified, so his relatives couldn't be reached for information. Wednesday's pharmacy shooting became the third justifiable homicide of the year for San Antonio, not including a shooting death May 17 that's still being investigated as possible self-defense. The number, however, is half of what it was at this time in 2008, a year the city's justified homicide rate jumped significantly from previous years. Wynn's wife said it's not uncommon for pharmacists to keep guns. A lot of pharmacies do, but we carry one because we have been robbed before, she said without elaborating. One of their employees, Maria Martinez, said it's been years since the pharmacy last was robbed. Lindsay Simpkins, a cashier at Martha's Mexican Restaurant, said no one suspected the pharmacy owner a man with a strong sense of humor to fatally shoot anyone. The pharmacy was closed the remainder of the day. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security !

An email exchange between a DSGL doctor and an anti-gun physician.by NancyAn email exchange between a DSGL doctor and an anti-gun physician.
This email archive is offered to our visitors as an example of the kind of conversation that DSGL docs sometimes have with anti-gun docs. We are not afraid of fair and honest debate. We even invite you to visit some of the included anti-gun links and see if those organizations will respond to your polite emails. (Good luck.) It begins with a message that came in to our "comments" mail box: Please visit www.psr.org. [Physicians for Social Responsibility] There, you will find information which refutes many of the points you and your colleagues make within your website. Although many of your points make some intuitive sense, I note the distinct contempt for the "gun control freaks". I am a Physiatrist in [city withheld]. I have cared for many inner city youth who have been victims of spinal cord or brain injuries, not because of any criminal activity, but because of their often inescapable proximity to it. How can the "gun romantics" step up to the plate in a responsible collaborative way with inner city and suburban anti-violence coalitions in order to draft effective policies and procedures to reduce inner city violence. All too often, I see the apparent ignorance of this issue. Where are the compassionate conservatives in the dialogue of how to solve this problem (without infringing on your rights) given the paucity of resources, education, and capability of many of our urban brothers and sisters. You will note that the facts that are cited by Physicians for Social Responsibility are substantiated by peer reviewed journals. This is REAL science, not junk science. Please note that Dr. Blank's page and Powerpoint slide presentations include reference lists, NONE of which is from a scientific publication. WE both know that one can take tangentially related facts and spin them into an argument. Peer reviewed editorial boards prevent this phenomenon from occurring, as you very well know, doctors. Are there women and minorities enrolled in your organization? I see no mention of any non-white, non-male name. How does your organization propose to limit criminal access to firearms? Why not background checks at gun shows (even instant)? Why not one gun per month to prevent straw purchase and gun running (which has been proven over and over to be responsible for flooding poor, crime-ridden communities with guns)? Why not hold the legal purchaser responsible for a crime by placing serial numbers in several places of a gun so it can be traced? Why not force the ATF to relinquish the stats on prior ownership instead of burying them (just ask the US Attorney's Office in Philly if this is true). Visit www.silentmarch.org. Visit www.firstmonday2000.org. Let me know what you think. Take a neutral view instead of one spun from the motives of the NRA to have as many guns bought as possible to get the manufacturers rich. Second email: One statistic. Only 3.5% of gun homicides are characterized as "justifiable." 60% of these are by Police Officers. I am concerned with the accidental, illegal, and preventable homicides which are not justifiable. There are many statistics from the FBI Crime Reports, to the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, to the ATF, to the Centers for Disease Control. Most of the stats point to the fact that guns are erroneously considered protective. Some may quote that brandishing guns prevent hundreds of thousands of crimes per year. Where are all of the self-defense homicide statistics where law-abiding citizens are killing the "bad guys?" You would intuitively think that if guns are truly protective, there would be more of these incidences. 4000 kids between 10 and 14 are dying each year. 33,000 people are being killed each year. Long guns are NOT the problem. Very few mishaps occur among hunters. The semi-automatic weapons and handguns are the culprits. Who needs to hunt with a Tech9? Mac 10? Do you think that law abiding citizens need to walk around with semi-automatics to protect themselves? I look forward to your responses. [name withheld] Response from DSGL's Andrew Johnstone, RPh, MD: >One statistic. Only 3.5% of gun homicides are characterized as "justifiable." 60% of these are by Police Officers. Several points come to mind. First, you MUST NOT assume a "linear" reduction in homicides of justifiable and unjustifiable types would occur with more stringent gun control laws. Even in the most basic analysis, it should be obvious that the criminally-intent individuals have a very inelastic demand for firearms, which will NOT be highly affected by any gun control law, whereas the homeowner, hunter, or other honest gun owner does tend to obey such laws. Thus, even if you assume that about 1 in 50 homicides (say 20 of 1000) is "justifiable" - you may drop the 20 down to 5, yet only drop the 1000 down to 990 - not exactly the intended net impact. Secondly, remember that homicide perpetrators and victims are far from a representative cross-section of society, and about 80% of the perpetrators have prior felony convictions, and 60% of the victims do. To assume this subset of the population will behave the same way as some suburban professionals would is naive, to say the least; witness the same general subset as to their behavior regarding assault, illicit drug use, and so forth. Before physicians "dabble" in the firearms-and-public-health issue, we need to be very aware that our ignorance of sociology, criminology, history, ballistics, and a host of other pertinent issues (simply working in an E.R. and treating gunshot wounds does not a criminologist make, whether or not you are intelligent, sensitive, or "care" a lot!) >There are many statistics from the FBI Crime Reports, to the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, to the ATF, to the Centers for Disease Control. Please realize that the CPHV is an advocacy group in the extreme sense. You probably would be highly skeptical of "data" espoused by the NRA, or even endorsed by them, despite their being rated by Congressional Digest in the 1970's (along with the American Library Association) as one of the two most consistently truthful lobbying organizations - let a little of that healthy skepticism put the reins on your acceptance of CPHV "data." The CDC is not much better - I think I sent you Kates' and Suter's article links; to cite CDC data without familiarity with Kates or Suter's critiques is analogous to the folks who believe vaccines are some sort of mind control plot because they read it in some tabloid quoting "government data." FBI and ATF data was until the mid-60's fairly unbiased, but as the agencies both became increasingly politicized, they started to collect data more selectively in a clear manner of bolstering certain legislation. >Some may quote that brandishing guns prevent hundreds of thousands of crimes per year. Where are all of the self-defense homicide statistics where law-abiding citizens are killing the "bad guys?" You would intuitively think that if guns are truly protective, there would be more of these incidences. You would intuitively think that turning up the oxygen on Uncle Harry would be good for him, if he is dyspneic, but hopefully as a physician, you'd veto that "intuitive" action on the part of some family member, despite their genuine concern. The difference is that the family would probably acknowledge your expertise in the area, even if they didn't fully understand your explanation of the complexities of the "hypoxic drive" phenomenon. Physicians who emote so strongly about the bullet wounds we see in the E.R. seem almost arrogantly reluctant to acknowledge the greater expertise of criminologist, sociologists, ballisticians, and so forth, as if our M.D. somehow gives us some inherent knowledge which supersedes that expertise. We don't listen, and just like Uncle Harry, our arrogant ineptitude and intrusion into what is not an area of our expertise causes the loss of life. Errant public policy on gun control causes many deaths each year; it is almost humorous to see intelligent physicians bemoan the "30,000 lives" affected by guns, then blithely assume that we can "tinker" all we want, with no risk - that is like allowing some guy to administer chemotherapy because he has a permit to use chemicals in his home photography lab! > Who needs to hunt with a Tech9? Mac 10? Two problems there. First, you make the mistake of assuming that the only people who object to gun control laws are hunters - though we tolerate thousands of deaths and crippling injuries each year for the yuppie-approved "sports" like skiing and bike riding, suburban physicians assume we shouldn't tolerate a similar level of injury or death for the mere sport of hunting. I'm not sure that is a very culturally-open-minded view, but it isn't really the point. The Second Amendment isn't about hunting, or even self-protection, any more than the First Amendment is about poetry and shopping lists; both are meant to protect politically significant things as they affect the crucial balance of power between the citizen and government. Again, I'm not sure where physicians come off "interpreting" the Second Amendment (would we like historians to interpret the PDR?), much less disagreeing with it, but if one does disagree, amending the Constitution is the only legitimate way to approach it - we can't just ignore laws we disagree with. To be politically significant in this sense, firearms would have to have enough firepower that when possessed in widespread and anonymous fashion among the general citizenry, it would deter the creation of a police state. No, that doesn't require bombs and rocket launchers, but hand and shoulder firearms fill that role easily. You have to admit that if everyone in the U.S. had a Tech9, it would be hard to oppress them (as opposed to simply killing them, which would not accomplish the goals of a tyrant). >Do you think that law abiding citizens need to walk around with semi-automatics to protect themselves? If you get an intra-abdominal infection, do you NEED broad-spectrum antibiotics? Maybe not, but if your life is at stake, you're going to want all the "firepower" you can get. Citizens engage in far more instances of self-defense than most police officers, and it is hard to make any rational case that their firearms needs would be much different. I strongly suspect you know little enough about firearms that you were unaware that "semiautomatic" firearms have been around for over a century, were available by mail order until 32 years ago, and are generally less powerful than their "sporting" counterparts, and more likely to wound than kill. It is hard to imagine that our currently disgraceful crime rate that is so much higher than the 1950's is due to "easy availability of semiautomatic guns" when teenagers could legally buy them from mail-order catalogs back then...use a little logic before you hop on a "cause!" I respect your "genuine concern" - to a point, just like I respect Uncle Harry's nephew wanting to crank up the oxygen. However, I lose respect for that nephew if he keeps trying to turn up the oxygen time and again every time my back is turned. He either needs to realize his lack of expertise in the area, and back off, or he'd better do a hell of a lot of reading so he can at least speak to me with a level of knowledge good enough to make me take his opinions seriously. With all due respect - I feel the same way about anti-gun physicians. Here again is some of the most basic and essential reading material if you expect to gain a working knowledge of this issue. I hope you do, because I'm NOT doing this to protect hunting or some other idle pursuit - real lives can be saved if we can resist the temptation to put symbolism before substance in the gun control debate. Kates' "Guns and Public Health" article from the Tennessee Law Review, http://www.2ndlawlib.com/journals/tennmed.html Suter's "Guns in the Medical Literature" from the Journal of the Medical Association of Georgia, http://rkba.org/research/suter/med-lit.html?suter#first_hit Kopel's St. Louis University Public Law Review article, http://www.constitution.org/2ll/2ndschol/63perilo.htm If you REALLY care about the murders, accidents, and children as much as you say you do, you need to read all the above, and more. Then you'll understand the passion of DSGL. Sincerely, Andrew Johnstone, RPh/MD Next email from the anti-gun physician: Can you please explain why a gun-loving homeowner who heard a drunk out on his stoop chose to pump him full of lead? 7 shots into him when he was only a nuisance. Your analogy about hypoxic drive is an interesting one, yet I feel, impertinent. If anyone kills someone with a gun, justifiably or not, (unless he/she buries him/her outback) the police crime reports should reflect the occurrence (unless there is a bias in reporting). Therefore, why wouldn't we see many more "successes" by "an appropriately armed populace" in killing the "bad guy?". I'm sure the media would feast on these episodes in the papers or on TV as they love to report murders. I can't say I have seen a report of more than ONE of these incidences nationwide. What conservative opportunist on the board of the American Library Assoc. endorses the NRA platform? Who qualified that organization as consistently truthful, and where is that "scientific conjecture" reported? It seems that you support the elimination of all gun safety laws. Would you support the individual gun owner "law abiding citizen" to handle him- or herself (in self-defense or whatever circumstance like killing someone well-known in the heat of an alcohol or drug induced frenzy when the gun is readily available), in the name of preservation of his/her rights, by taking the law into his/her own hands? How is this law-abiding? Exactly, by what law would they be abiding? Why are you so paranoid about the creation of a police state? Is there any indication that we, in this country, have even come close to the development of this sort of situation in the last 100 years? It seems incredible that you would prefer citizens (often compelled by rage or confusion) to have power over the tyranny of state (arguably compelled by profit motives too frequently, yet for the most part constitutional, yet rarely approaching tyrannical behavior) by arming them all. What about the guy who lost $150,000 in the stock market, got pissed, and mowed down 7 employees with a semi-automatic before he shot himself? What about the guy in San-Francisco who freaked and shot a dozen or so arbitrarily on the street? With episodes like this, how can you justify having MORE guns around when on SO MANY OCCASIONS, we hear in the news (perhaps you would suggest the media is a set of liberal organizations NEVER willing to report on these self-protection scenarios you describe) people snapping and taking innocent lives? The court system chooses to protect the rights of the individual from the tyranny of the state by stating that he/she is innocent until proven guilty. It seems that these innocent bystanders aren't afforded that same luxury. THEY are the law-abiding citizens whose rights I and many other "liberal radicals" want to protect .... from "gun-romantic's" psychotic rages. What were they guilty of which had them get shot by people who are "armed to protect themselves from criminals"? Yeah....you are "right" .... we need more guns. Perhaps, if everyone on the street were carrying a semi-automatic, they could have killed the freak. But then, who next would be a freak worthy of righteous assassination? Whose judgment criteria would redefine "justifiable?" Do you really believe, when humans are just that, human, and often get despondent and hopeless, that self-control will prevail in all circumstances, even with the best firearm training programs? Remember the Hippocratic Oath, Doctor? Above All Else, Do No Harm! Handguns harm people. Long guns hunt. Let's hunt animals (for survival and not sport) and not people. One could argue that I am woefully uninformed and poorly read on the bibliography that you deem to represent the body of knowledge by which we should all live our lives. I speak of ideals and portray a world of peace, not murder. I'll get busy reading. Please invite your colleagues to get busy gaining compassion for the people who don't have the resources to work out their problems for themselves. There MUST be more peaceable solutions to the plight of the psychosocially challenged than simply arming society against them or locking them up like animals and throwing away the key. We both agree that it is the education and support of youth in developing the skills necessary to have a successful future. Often, their parents are not equipped to do this themselves. They may even paradoxically expose them to the problems that we are trying to have the kids avoid. But it is in the domain of love and attention which gets them through, not having separativeness and protectionist-induced gun acquisition for citizens where the answers lie. Peace. Next email from Dr. Johnstone: > Therefore, why wouldn't we see many more "successes" by "an appropriately armed populace" in killing the "bad guy?". Please realize gun owners in general are not quite that blood thirsty; you see on TV the guy who shoots through a door, which under almost any circumstance would be UN-justified, but you don't see on TV the thousands of cases where the gun is merely displayed or used to give teeth to a "leave me alone and go rape/rob/assault someone else" plea. > What conservative opportunist on the board of the American Library Assoc. endorses the NRA platform? Who qualified that organization as consistently truthful, and where is that "scientific conjecture" reported? The ALA didn't endorse the NRA platform, though I do personally know several very pro-Second-Amendment librarians; it was the ALA and the NRA who were both cited by the publishers of Congressional Digest (who I believe is the Library of Congress) as the two most "consistently truthful" lobbying organizations. You seem surprised that an organization could be "truthful" and yet have a platform you disagree with - I'm not sure why. > Would you support the individual gun owner "law abiding citizen" to handle him or herself (in self-defense or whatever circumstance like killing someone well-known in the heat of an alcohol or drug induced frenzy when the gun is readily available) I think you've been watching too much television, my friend - with a culturally narrow world-view based more on Miami-vice reruns than on reality, it is going to be difficult to form sound public policy. You seem to accept the "crime of passion" concept whereby an ordinary person is somehow transformed into a lethal killer merely by the presence of a gun. If you'd look more closely at the data, you'd see that "ordinary people" don't kill others very often - murder by "friend and acquaintance" is more commonly a habitual violent criminal or stalker who finally kills a competitor or victim he's met before (thus meeting the definition). As far as my being "against all gun safety laws" - I'm against all laws which cause more harm than good, and when we ALREADY have laws against murder, whether the murderer is intoxicated or not, and whether armed with a gun, knife, club, or fist, there is not any additional benefit to some separate "feel-good" law against gun murder, and criminologists can explain reasons that such laws are often actually counter-productive. We also have laws which adequately address the accidental death or injury situation, again regardless of the instrumentality. You seem more preoccupied with fighting gun ownership than doing anything truly constructive to reduce crime, violence, or accidents. > It seems incredible that you would prefer citizens (often compelled by rage or confusion) to have power over the tyranny of state (arguably compelled by profit motives too frequently, yet for the most part constitutional, yet rarely approaching tyrannical behavior) by arming them all. This "incredible" state of affairs is the way things were for the first 180 years this country existed, and after the dramatic increase in gun control laws of the past few decades, we've seen a predictable escalation of crime and violence. If that domestic evidence isn't at least enough to give you pause in your rush towards firearms prohibition, how do you reconcile the experience of other countries which HAVE become police states? You seem petrified by the 20 or so firearms murders our country experiences each day, yet totally unmoved by the 4,500 or more innocent deaths each day which are committed by police and military against their own citizens in those other countries. I hope your apparent insensitivity is merely a naďve conviction that "it can't happen here" rather than the kind of ethnocentric attitude which seems endemic in urban-anti-gun-professionals. > Is there any indication that we, in this country, have even come close to the development of this sort of situation in the last 100 years? I don't think the Japanese interred in the 40's, the blacks experimented on in the 50's, or the students at Kent State would be quite as secure in that opinion, but I do agree that Kent State wasn't exactly Tiananmen Square. I do wonder, however, how close we should get to that very dangerous and irreversible political situation (a police state) before we exercise caution. The number of lives at stake so dramatically dwarf those affected by gun crime that without some demonstrated benefit unattainable by other means (and "demonstrated" doesn't mean the arm-chair theorizing of a bunch of physician ignorant of the most basic history and firearms issues), that I don't think advising caution before blindly endorsing "common sense" gun regulations is exactly "paranoia." > What about the guy who lost $150,000 in the stock market, got pissed, and mowed down 7 employees with a semi-automatic before he shot himself? First off, you might want to get over your obsession with "semi-automatic" guns - they have been around for a hundred years, and are a lot less likely to kill (military guns are designed for the tactically more advantageous goal of wounding) than if he had used an ordinary hunting rifle. Secondly, the people in that office were ill-advised and too stupid to know it - they actually believed that some symbolic legislation and a "no firearms policy" in the personnel manual would protect them. That sounds like the kind of advice you'd endorse - and it got them killed. You actually want me to stand by why you give more of that kind of advice to public policy makers? Maybe some "extra" tough law against say, guns with black and scary stocks? Get real! The ONLY thing that would have helped those people was if one of them (or more) had been armed, like responsible adults tend to be in OTHER places. In your cowboy-movie state of mind, I'm sure you somehow envision that would lead to "more death" - but I challenge you to show any evidence it has. Mass murders like that ONLY happen in places where the victims are unarmed, either due to personal preference (which I think is fine), corporate policy (which is not, since "no-gun" workplace policies endanger lives (or at a MINIMUM, don't protect them), or legislation (which is wholly inappropriate). > Do you really believe, when humans are just that, human, and often get despondent and hopeless, that self-control will prevail in all circumstances, even with the best firearm training programs? The point is, if you've been living anywhere but television fantasy land, such self-control DOES prevail; obviously not in all circumstances (despondent people kill with cars, knives, and fists - in fact, FBI crime data I've seen cited more murders with "hands and feet" than with semiautomatic rifles). The idea is to minimize innocent lives lost, remember? If you could institute some draconian gun law and reduce the murder rate, fine, but how many lives would it COST? Don't you care, or are you simply willing to ASSUME it would be a net saving of lives, just because you "care?" Some of the rest of us also care; only we are willing to become informed before trying to change public policy. > Remember the Hippocratic Oath, Doctor? Above All Else, Do No Harm! Handguns harm people. Just for the sake of argument, if you pushed through a gun law of some sort, and it clearly led to more innocent human lives lost, wouldn't that be harm? I think it would! And our own nation's history is filled with clear examples where gun laws have backfired and caused more lives to be lost. Do you really not care? Again, I think your irrational HATRED and FEAR of guns and/or gun owners is causing you to push for detrimental social policy! > But it is in the domain of love and attention which gets them through, not having separativeness and protectionist-induced gun acquisition for citizens where the answers lie. There MUST be more peaceable solutions to the plight of the psychosocially challenged than simply arming society against them or locking them up like animals and throwing away the key. Maybe I needed to hear that - you are stereotyping me and my fellows as empty of compassion, love and understanding, and I must say I RESENT that...however perhaps I am stereotyping you in some of the above comments. I do hope, however, that you broaden your cultural view, not only to include the many ghetto and underprivileged people, but to see the world from the eyes of others. I do a lot of counseling of rape and assault survivors, and they are gentle, loving, and trusting individuals, all of whom would give a hand, a donation, and so forth, and who in many cases do MORE than other people charitably and for the downtrodden. One of my patients left her job as a teacher (due to the "gun free schools" law and the fact that she wished to have a firearm in her car since she had to travel through very dangerous neighborhood to go to/from work and had decided not to get raped a second time). She now works at a church-run shelter, volunteers at a free clinic (where I've donated thousands of dollars of equipment), and is a March-of-Dimes coordinator. Pretty damned charitable and loving. If you beg her for money, she'll give, if you need a shoulder, she'll give - but if anyone tries to sodomize her at knifepoint in front of her children, and tell her she deserves it because she's just a "******" again - she will resist, even if that means killing them. If that makes her a "violent gun-nut" to you, then I guess you'll never be able to cross that cultural divide. > Peace. If you met her, you'd cheer her as one of those disadvantaged people who triumphed over great odds when growing up, and became one whose compassion and love in turn is now helping others, but I doubt she'd agree with ANY of your (laudably) idealistic but ill-informed and dangerous dabbling in gun control policy. Gun control has never led to Peace, but only to increased crime, violence, and worst of all - genocide. Sincerely, Andrew Johnstone, RPh/MD The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
[NV-firearms] Something interesting happened this week......nothing happened.by Nancy[NV-firearms] Something interesting happened this week......nothing happened.
Date: May 30, 2009 12:19 AM I thought I would relate to you something that you already know - that gun owners in America are NOT the problem or to be worried about. This week, President Barry Soetoro visited Las Vegas. This was in support of his senate wimp, er a majority leader Harry "let me see how I can kiss his ass this week" Reid, to help him raise funds for his recoronation. I'm sure Harry will have need of all those FRN's. Between the hyper-inflation that is coming soon which will wipe out the spending power of them, and the fact that good ol' Harry is behind in the polls EVEN WITHOUT A CANDIDATE RUNNING AGAINST HIM, he will need to grease his mud slinging machine like never before. Now even with every reporter in town fawning all over themselves trying to find an angle to report on, it would have been easy to ignore this ignoramus while he was rubbing shoulders with the Hollyweird entertainment elite at Caesars Palace and walking all over our service men and women while pretending to understand how the photovoltaic solar panels at Nellis Air Force Base work. But for two days, traffic was all tied up in knots anytime he wanted to go someplace. All streets close to the freeway were blocked, as were all of the overpasses. Working men and women were kept from going to their jobs or about their lives, tons of air pollution were created while cars and trucks came to a halt for long periods of time, flight paths of aircraft were altered and delayed and millions of tax payer provided dollars were spent so Barry could have dinner and shuttle his private jet the ten miles from the airport to the Air Force base to avoid causing him any inconvenience. But the interesting part of all of this was related to me by a visiting tourist in my shop today. It seems that he and his wife were standing at the bus stop waiting to be taken to another tourist spot on the strip when traffic was suddenly altered. Lanes were blocked off and people held back while the presidential limo and attending vehicles stopped right in from of him and the bus stop. It then turned into the hotel and Barry got out and was ushered into the building. The limo was about 10 feet away from him when it stopped, and the door Barry went into was about 50 feet from him. OK, so what is so remarkable about that? Nothing happened. And that is the point. NOTHING happened. The tourist witnessing this was armed with his personal protection sidearm and was carrying concealed, as was his right. Shots didn't ring out, no one was injured, blood didn't flow in the street. Nothing happened. But to listen to President Soetoro, this man and all those like him are a danger to themselves and to society in general, and in this instance, to the prez himself. He has stated that no one needs the right to protect themselves and their families. And of course, he always travels with hundreds of staff and ARMED personal guards watching his every step. So he is telling us we are not as good as he is. Or that our family isn't as important as his is. Bull****. We all KNOW that gun owners are not the problem. Never have been, never will be. And once again, this was proven out, the same as every other day by millions of gun owners all across the land. The same as it was the day my father found himself alone in a room with Franklin Roosevelt, while armed with a loaded Thompson sub-machine gun. The same as it will be tomorrow, next week and five years from now. Barry can go straight back to Kenya. Or to hell. His choice. But as for me, I will be protecting my family. With my personal protection sidearm. And unless someone decides to endanger my family, nothing will happen. Oh, and for the record....I believe in God, the Constitution, protection for the life of the unborn, Family, Gold and Guns. I have both a Ron Paul bumpersticker AND a 'Don't Tread on Me' bumpersticker on my 23 year old American made truck that I drive to work every day. I carry a compact 1911 .45 wherever I go. I don't go into buildings, states, airports or any other place that says I can't bring my gun along. And I don't use any of the 'services' that the government provides for me. I guess that makes me a pretty dangerous individual. -- Glen R. Parshall Nevada/Utah CCW Instructor The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Gun Free = crime free?byNYPD forensic investigator stabbed to death in bed
NEW YORK - Michelle Lee's career was solving crimes. Working as a forensic investigator for the New York Police Department, she was training to do the type of "CSI" work made famous on television. But the 24-year-old became a victim of a crime herself, stabbed to death in her bed, her naked body found in a pool of blood. Using the same investigative techniques Lee was learning, authorities on Friday arrested her ex-lover Gary McGurk in the case, charging him with second-degree murder. McGurk pleaded not guilty and was being held without bail. His attorney, Joseph Corozzo said his client was innocent. http://enews.earthlink.net/article/us?guid=20090523/4a1774c0_3ca6_15526200905231488428168 The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
Number of Concealed Carry Permit Requests From Women On the Riseby Nancy Number of Concealed Carry Permit Requests From Women On the Rise
An unprecedented number of women are taking their protection into their own hands by getting a gun. Gun stores are seeing more women customers than anyone can remember. Many women are also getting permits to carry a concealed weapon. Local 12 Reporter Liz Bonis shows us why many women are in a hurry to arm themselves. When Jenny Jeffery recently made the decision to get a license to conceal and carry a weapon she says it wasn't because she feels threatened right now, but rather: Jenny Jeffery, Gun Owner: "What I saw, where society was going as a whole, and the need to step up and be proactive in my safety and that of my family." Apparently, Jeffery is not alone. Homer Cole has owned Shooters Supply for nearly a decade. Cole says, when it comes to sales of guns to girls... Homer Cole, Shooters Supply & Sporting Goods: "I guess, when we first started, if we sold one in ten to fifteen, it was pretty good. Now, it's not unusual to have one in three, one in four to ladies purchasing handguns." In fact, when Homer and a business partner recently built this new range beneath Shooters in Independence, a prime consideration was the rise in those who are female choosing to be armed. "We kind of thought of that when we designed it to have it more open, well lit, friendly atmosphere, so if a lady came in, she would be comfortable in doing that." Cole's team also has cameras to monitor the range and make it even more female-friendly. Tim Harney is a retired police officer and a conceal carry instructor. He says, when it comes to demographics, Cole and many other Tri-State gun shops and agencies catering to women are right on target. Some have had so many women sign up for the conceal-carry course this year, they've had to add sessions. Tim Harney, Conceal-Carry Course Instructor: "We've seen a five percent increase in women this year alone." Others have had so many inquires from women who want to get a license to conceal and carry a weapon they are offering the course free to females. So, what's driving all this? Well, some say it's a concern about the gun laws that could change, but others say it's simply that when the economy goes down, crime goes up, and many are concerned about personal safety. "They are worried about being robbed, or walking in parking lots and to and from work." Jeffery's concern started when her husband left for a tour of duty in Iraq. "While he was gone, and most people in the area knew he was gone, there was a genuine concern about being alone in the house." Even though Jeffery's husband is now back, she's still serious about shooting. And that, Harney says, is the secret to a woman's success. When it comes to the argument against girls using guns, which is mainly the risk of being overpowered by a stronger opponent, so the gun will be used on her... "I don't think that's true. I think a woman. with proper training and practice, with a weapon, she's every bit formidable as a man." Practice creates what Harney calls muscle memory, something critical for anyone to appropriately respond in a stressful situation. "There's a lot of women that can outshoot men, it has nothing to do with gender." Gun safety instructors tell us some of their women students are in their 70's. Man has no regrets defending Oklahoma City pharmacyby NancyMan has no regrets defending Oklahoma City pharmacy
Published: May 22, 2009 http://newsok.com/man-has-no-regrets-defending-oklahoma-city-pharmacy/article/3371710 Pharmacist Jerome Ersland talks about a fatal shooting that occurred at Reliable Discount Pharmacy in Oklahoma City. Photo by Sarah Phipps, The Oklahoman Jerome Ersland was back at work Thursday filling prescriptions and hoping that by taking the life of a 16-year-old boy two days earlier, he had saved others. Advertisement Rubbing an oversized bandage on his left forearm, where he said he was grazed by a robbers bullet, Ersland related details of what he said was a highly organized hit on the Reliable Discount Pharmacy. "I just regret anybody would get killed, Ersland said. "But if I wouldnt have been here, there would have been three people killed the other pharmacist and the two techs. He also recalls the angry voices of people who gathered outside the pharmacy Tuesday night, shouting that he was a racist who unnecessarily took a life of the Seeworth Academy charter school student, Antwun Parker. "There were a lot of black people gathered out there yelling and everything at my boss, Ersland said. An organized hit After the pharmacy near SW 59 and Pennsylvania was robbed two years ago, the owner installed new security measures to try to make sure his employees would never again be forced to a back room and pistol-whipped. "We have a very good security system, Ersland said, motioning to the magnetic door locks that wont let anyone in or out of the store without permission. "The door locks, and they (robbers) knew that. They had cased it because they knew exactly what time to hit us when wed have all of our narcotics out and our money out. About 10 minutes before 6 p.m., Ersland said, two robbers wearing ski masks waited for someone to leave the pharmacy and then grabbed the open door and threw down a board to stop the door from closing. The robbers went in cursing and yelling, ordering employees to give them money and drugs, Ersland said. Two women who were working behind the counter ran for a back room where they would be safe, but Ersland said he couldnt run. Ersland said hes a veteran with disabilities from wounds he received in Operation Desert Storm, wears a cumbersome back brace and just had his latest back surgery six weeks ago. "All of a sudden, they started shooting, he said. "They were attempting to kill me, but they didnt know I had a gun. They said, Youre gonna die. Thats when one of them shot at me, and thats when he got my hand. Ersland said he was thrown against a wall, but managed to go for the semiautomatic in his pocket. "And thats when I started defending myself, he said. "The first shot got him in the head, and that slowed him down so I could get my other gun. But as one robber hit the floor, Ersland said, a bullet from the other robber whizzed past his ear. The pharmacist said he then got his second gun from a nearby drawer, a Taurus "Judge. After he had the big gun, Ersland said, the second robber ran. But as he started to chase after the second robber, Ersland said, he looked back to see the 16-year-old he had shot in the head getting up again. Ersland said he then emptied the Kel-Tec .380 into the boys chest as he kept going after the second robber. "I went after the other guy, but he was real fast and Im crippled, Ersland said. Outside the pharmacy, he said he saw what he thought was a third black male in a car with the engine running and reaching for what appeared to be a shotgun. "I pulled out my Judge and pointed it right between his eyes and he floored it, Ersland said. The investigation Because of the sensitive nature of the investigation, police said they could not confirm any of Erslands story, including whether Ersland was shot, whether the robbers ever fired on him or even if Parker was armed. On Thursday, police were still looking for the second robber, described as a black man in his 20s, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing about 175 pounds. The man was last seen wearing a red shirt and dark pants. A man was arrested about a block away after crashing a stolen car that fit the description Ersland gave, but police said the man has not been linked to the robbery. After the gunfire When he went back in the pharmacy, Ersland said, he called police. "I asked if the girls were all right, and they were in the back crying, he said. "I was glad to know they were alive. We were lucky and Im glad I defended us, because I feel that a person has a right to defend themselves at their home or at their work. People deserve to be safe and not be afraid of people that want to take money when they dont work for it. Thats what the Second Amendment and the states "concealed carry license are for, he said. "Fortunately, God made them miss me, except for this minor scratch, Ersland said. "I was able to return fire and protect the girls lives. God was helping me. British Women Take Up Shooting:by Nancy Its a sunlit May morning
at the West London Shooting School in Northolt. Except today, theres something unusual in the air. For amid all the noise of gunshots and exploding clay pigeons, you can hear the sound of female voices. And thats something of a rarity because, along with rugby and boxing, shooting is not so much predominantly, as overwhelmingly a male sport. Look at any of the groups striding across the schools grounds, and there are at least eight men to every woman. This party, though, is different. The instructor is a man, but his three pupils are women. And the reason theyre here is that they have come on one of the schools special one-day ladies courses aimed at giving women the basic skills of shotgun-wielding http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/countryside/5361334/National-Sho\ oting-Week-shooting-dames.html The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
Does “Gun Control” Benefit Law Enforcement?:by NancyDoes Gun Control Benefit Law Enforcement?:
Gun Control Laws actually have existed for hundreds of years. Of course, in colonial America they were vastly different than they are today. For instance, in colonial Massachusetts, it was required that any citizen traveling more than one mile from home be armed. Get that? It was required that they carry a gun! Can you imagine? In Massachusetts no less? In the end I believe that Gun Control laws are not of much benefit to law enforcement. Bad guys will get guns no matter what. Good guys - those citizens who respect and support us - present no threat in owning or carrying firearms (although I agree they need to be well trained!) (I agree with Frank that armed citizens should be well trained but training requirements should not be a prerequisite to the exercise of a fundamental right.) http://www.officer.com/interactive/2009/05/21/does-gun-control-benefit-le/ |

Girl, 17, fends off mugging attempt This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press Wednesday, April 29, 2009. By DAISY RATZLAFF Valley Press Staff Writer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUARTZ HILL - Sheriff's deputies are searching for two would-be robbers who grabbed a teenage girl as she walked to school, but were foiled when she fought back. The girl punched one man in the nose, kicked the other in the groin, then beat both with her marching band baton before running away. "The moral to this story is don't mess with the marching band girls, or you just might get what you deserve," said Deputy Michael Rust of the Lancaster Sheriff's Station. "Final score: Marching band 2, thugs 0." The 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was walking along 65th Street West near Avenue L-8 about 8 a.m. Friday when two men walked up behind her, said Rust. "One of them grabbed her by the coat and demanded her money," he said. "(But) she quickly delivered a 'palm strike,' hitting the suspect in the nose. She then kicked the second suspect in the groin area. "The girl happened to be carrying a large baton, which she uses in marching band, and proceeded to beat both of the suspects with the baton. "Her quick and decisive actions stopped both of the suspects from robbing her." The blow to the first man's nose caused it to bleed profusely and knocked off his sunglasses, leading him to back away, Rust said. The kick "obviously made (the second assailant) back away also." After the men retreated, the girl ran away. Deputies put out a police radio broadcast informing other deputies to look for two attempted-robbery suspects: "one of them is probably holding his nose and the other one is limping after being kicked in the groin area." Both men were described as white, under 5 foot 6 inches and in their mid-20s. One was wearing a multicolored knit cap with dreadlocks, which might have been fake. The man whose sunglasses were knocked off appeared to have been missing an eye, deputies said. Anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts about the men can contact the Lancaster Sheriff's Station at (661) 948-8466. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
TX: Armed Apt resident shoots and kills intruderby Armed Residents save livesStudent killed after forcing way into apartment
FORT WORTH An 18-year-old Fort Worth man killed Tuesday afternoon inside a north Fort Worth apartment had apparently forced his way inside, armed with an aluminum bat, when he was shot by one of the apartments residents, investigators said. Derek Splawn, a student in the Keller school district, had been upset with the apartments 18-year-old resident and had reportedly threatened in an earlier telephone conversation "that he was tired of this and he was going to come over there," homicide Detective Curt Brannan said. Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, police said, Splawn made good on his word and had a friend drive him to the Watercolor apartments in the 8600 block of Spring Tree Lane, near Beach Street and North Tarrant Parkway. As the friend waited in the car, Brannan said, Splawn first pounded on the apartments patio door, shouting for the 18-year-old resident to come out, before beating on the apartments front door. Though the resident did not emerge, Brannan said, Splawn was able to force his way inside the apartment after the residents roommate opened the front door to peek out and saw Splawn standing there with the bat. "Before he could get the door shut, the man [Splawn] pushed the door open and had taken several steps inside the doorway in the direction of the [18-year-old]," Brannan said. Brannan said the 18-year-old, in turn, picked up a shotgun he kept in the home and fired once, striking Splawn in the face. An apartment manager, who was in the area showing an apartment to prospective tenant, was alerted by the roommate and called 911. Splawn was pronounced dead at the scene. Brannan said he is still investigating what prompted Splawns anger with the apartment resident. Brannan said Splawns friend, who was waiting in his vehicle, left the scene after hearing the gunshot but later returned with Splawns family members. "He heard the shot and even heard the sound of the bat bouncing off the floor, and he panicked," Brannan said. "He drove from there to the shooting victims familys resident and told the victims brother and mother what had happened and brought them back to the scene." Also arriving at the scene Tuesday, Brannan said, were the parents of the 18year-old resident. Brannan said the 18-year-old was interviewed and released pending further investigation and presentation of the case to the Tarrant County district attorneys office for review. Keller school district officials say Splawn was a junior at the New Directions Learning Center, an alternative campus. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security !

tool goes here PASCAGOULA A woman, awakened by the sound of someone removing the screen from her bedroom window, got out of her bed at 1 a.m. Friday, walked to her sons room and quietly woke him. She said, Snigg get up, the son said in an interview later Friday morning. I got up, grabbed my gun and went to the corner there by her room, he said, standing at the door of the apartment, on the bottom floor of the last in a row of Spanish-style buildings in the Granada Apartments on Chicot Road. It was dark in the apartment, but the window was backlit, Snigg said. He heard the window go up and saw a man coming in. He stuck his hand under and pulled the blinds back, the blinds and the curtain, he said. And he eased in like he was attempting to come in. I fired two shots, then he ran off, Snigg said. Police say they wont identify the woman or her son, who offered the nickname Snigg, for fear of retribution. Javorous Darnell Tims, 20, ran about 80 feet from the window, fell to the sidewalk and died of a single gunshot wound, police said Friday. Pascagoula police said Snigg and his mother acted appropriately, taking the actions they felt necessary to protect themselves. However, because a man died, the case will be presented to a grand jury for review. Tims, who had at one time lived in apartments not far away, was a familiar face in the parking lot of the Granada Apartments, according to Dustin Clarke, 22, who handles maintenance and courtesy security at the apartments. Not many people in the complex heard the shots, said Clarke, who was at the scene when police investigated the shooting and talked with residents and investigators. Clarke said Tims had gotten his head through the window when Snigg fired the first shot and missed. That shot hit the wall under the window, Clarke said. By the time Snigg fired the second shot, Tims had turned. The bullet went through Tims upper body, he said. The blinds were down. And the bullet hole in the blinds supported his (Sniggs) story, Clarke said. Tims ran about half the length of the building before he died. They found him on the sidewalk. He died quickly, he said. Tina Clarke, Dustins wife, holding a baby outside the office laundry, said it is kind of scary having a shooting at 1 a.m., but she said theyd moved from a nearby apartment where crime was worse. Dustin Clarke said Granada has a 10 p.m. curfew to stop hanging out and other activities in the parking lot. But he said Tims was around often. Besides the curfew, the apartments have been neatly landscaped, with a newly refurbished office. The manager, Susan French, does a criminal background check before she accepts s renter. French said the apartment has made an effort to upgrade from a bad reputation years ago and has been successful. When something like this happens, you say, Oh great. How do we live this down? she said. But the guy who passed away. I hate it for his mother. Everyone has a mother. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
The Supreme Court says accidentally shootingby NancyThe Supreme Court says accidentally shooting
a gun during the commission of a crime should bring the same penalties as intentionally using a firearm. This came as the high court on Wednesday upheld the conviction and sentence of Christopher Michael Dean, who was arrested for trying to rob a bank in Rome, Ga., in 2004. A gun went off accidentally during the attempted robbery when Dean tried to switch the weapon from one hand to the other. The discharge brought an automatic 10-year sentence for firing a weapon during a crime. Dean appealed, saying the automatic sentence shouldn't count since the firing of the gun was accidental. Federal prosecutors said the law doesn't care why the gun went off, and the high court agreed ---- and I agree - NKH The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
FLA: Property Owner shoots/kills robbery suspectby Armed Citizens Save Liveshttp://www.cfnews13.com/News/CountyByCounty/CountyStories/2009/4//28/robbery_suspect_dies_after_being_shot_by_property_owner.html
Robbery Suspect Dies After Being Shot By Property Owner Tuesday, April 28, 2009 11:58:07 PM POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Polk County man shot at two robbery suspects Tuesday morning when he thought they were going to run him down. One of the suspects was hit in the head and died, and the other is still at large. The incident happened near a citrus grove on Rifle Range Road in the Wahneta area of Winter Haven. Property owner Jamie Jones heard a commotion outside while working inside his shed just before dawn. Jones told detectives a man and woman were driving away in his Land Rover. He said after they saw him, they tried to run him over. Fearing for his life, Jones pulled the trigger. One of the bullets hit 21-year-old Nikki McCormick in the head. While she lay bleeding in the passenger seat, the male suspect fled on foot. McCormick was rushed to the hospital where she later died. Detectives aren't sure if the male suspect was hit. The property owner last saw him limping down a nearby street. The Polk County Sheriff's Office searched for him by air and ground for hours but did not locate him. The sheriff's office hasn't been able to identify him. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says Jones likely won't face charges, and he offers a warning to other would-be robbers. "The word to the criminal is first -- quit being a criminal, quit stealing," Judd said. "But if you're breaking into someone's house, the homeowner is very likely to shoot you." When Guns Are Outlawed…:...................................................by NancyWhen Guns Are Outlawed: A psychotherapist in an Upper East
Side office. A young woman working in a grocery store. A city bus driver behind the wheel in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on a lunchtime route. Each of these was featured last year in a snapshot of murder in New York City, where authorities have long been battling illegal firearms - and seeing a degree of success. But these people were killed by knives, contributing to a troubling statistic in homicides. In 2008, even as gun killings fell, the number of killings committed with knives or other cutting instruments rose 50 percent in New York City, the Police Department said: to 125 from 83. Some other large cities saw no such increase last year, and police officials and experts are at a loss to explain what is either a new trend or a spike (Shades of the United Kingdom?) http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/28/nyregion/28knives.html?ref=nyre\ gion The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Day, Liebowitz and Pirrong: Guns make colleges saferby Nancyhttp://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/viewpoints/stories/DN-liebowitz_23edi.State.Edition1.205ac09.html Day, Liebowitz and Pirrong: Guns make colleges safer 04:56 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 Mass public shootings are a horrific feature of modern life. Many of the bloodiest examples of this scourge have occurred on college campuses. As professors, we are particularly sensitive to this danger. Despite this no, because of this we support a bill currently pending in the Texas Legislature that would permit the concealed carrying of firearms on college and university campuses in the state by holders of concealed-handgun permits. === Blog: Opinion Any public policy involving matters of life and death should be decided only after weighing carefully the competing risks. Examining the relevant facts and data indicates that permitting Texas permit holders to carry weapons on college campuses would improve safety because: The best available empirical evidence shows that concealed-carry laws reduce the incidence of mass public shootings. Mass public shootings occur almost exclusively in places like universities where concealed carry is proscribed. There are numerous examples of firearms owners acting to disarm would-be mass murderers, thereby saving lives. Concealed-handgun-permit holders are overwhelmingly law-abiding individuals. If gun bans truly reduced the risk of mass public shootings, then gun-free zones would be refuges from such havoc. Sadly, the exact opposite is true. All multiple-victim public shootings in the United States with more than three fatalities have occurred where concealed handguns are prohibited. Moreover, the worst primary and secondary school shootings have occurred in Europe, despite its draconian gun laws. Furthermore, peer-reviewed research demonstrates that the passage of a concealed-carry law reduces incidents of mass public shootings. Tellingly, those episodes that have occurred in states allowing concealed carry overwhelmingly happened in places like schools and malls, where concealed carry was prohibited. These facts should not be surprising. Gun-free zones are magnets for killers bent on maximizing their body count. They know that they face far less risk of quickly being stopped there. There are numerous cases in which private firearm owners have disarmed or disabled those attempting to murder indiscriminately in public places. In such circumstances, police officers and other "first responders" are anything but. The true first responders are often armed citizens who are in the line of fire. The possibility that a legally armed citizen could distract or disable an assailant could be the difference between life and death for potential victims. Nor are the benefits of permitting concealed carry on campus limited to its effect on the likelihood of mass carnage. Numerous peer-reviewed academic studies document that concealed-carry laws reduce rates of violent crime. Therefore, extending the right to carry will also help reduce the rates of crimes against individuals that occur all too frequently in gun-free zones, such as college campuses. On risks that concealed-carry licensees pose to their fellow citizens, the record is abundantly clear. Based on recent data, Texas permit holders commit misdemeanors and felonies at a rate of about one-seventh that of the rest of the population. For violent crimes, the rates are even lower. Opponents of permitting concealed carry on campus raise concerns about guns in dormitories. These are misplaced. The bill would allow universities to prohibit weapon storage in dorms. When concealed-carry laws were first proposed, opponents prophesied a plague of indiscriminate gunplay. It didn't happen. Similar apocalyptic fears are being raised now. The facts, though, demonstrate that concealed carry will reduce mass shootings. As college professors, we want to reduce the odds of a Virginia Tech massacre happening on a Texas college campus. That's why we encourage the Texas Legislature to allow concealed carry on the state's college campuses. Guns Protect Schools from Criminalsby JanaleeHi! Here's an article that "yours truly" wrote for U.S. News & World Report.
http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/2009/04/20/columbine-was-an-easy-target--guns-protect-schools-from-criminals.html Last paragraph of article: April 2009. Columbine shattered any remaining hopes of schools being the safest place in the world. School shootings and mass public shootings have dramatically increased. We live in a time of moral deterioration. We've sadly come to the realization that any one of us could become a victim of violent crime anytime, anywhere. I believe that people with differing views on gun control can work together to find solutions to stop the violence. In the meantime, this mom will cling to her guns and religion for her protection. |

Cleaning Walther PPK/S and a 1911byOkay, I need a little help. I have never owned or wanted to own a gun until now. My husband, at my request, got me a gun for Christmas, a Walther PPK. He had just returned from being deployed to Iraq on Christmas Day. He is now on his way to Afghanistan. Before he left I had only a little time using the gun. He is maticulous about cleaning his weapons. He showed me but I didn't write it down. The few weeks home flew by. I am a slow study. Would someone be able to write a check list for me on cleaing the PPK and the 1911. Since I have already done it a few times I really just need a check list. I know how important it is to have a clean weapon and I plan to practice. No sense in owning a gun if you are not comfortable with it. Thanks. |
Assuming proper disassembly and reassembly--here's what I'd say:...by NancyLeslie , from a friend of mine who is a little more knowledgable on these particular firearms... Hope it helps...
Nancy For both: Make sure the rails on the frame and in the slide are free of gunk and lightly lubed--I use a Q-tip with breakfree and make sure it's mostly clean with the last pass. Make sure the firing pin is free to move forward without feeling gritty--just press on it with a ball point pen. Unless you shoot a lot or have let the gun get a major exposure to dust or pocket lint this shouldn't be a problem. I'm one of those guys that prefers guns to have as little lube as possible: if you must lube, just put some on the rails and around the barrel where it meets the slide/bushing. Press down on the magazine follower to make sure it moves smoothly. If not, the magazine may have to be disassembled and cleaned, as before, I'd avoid lube and just get it clean and dry. As for cleaning in general. I tend to use just breakfree CLP (cleaner lubricant and protectant), q-tips, a toothbrush, nylon brush, bore patches, and a clean cloth like an old T-shirt. I don't do much with the barrel except brush it out and run a patch or two down the length with the last one being dry so it clears out any remaining excess solvent. When assembled, make sure the safety, slide, hammer, and trigger all move correctly. Hope this helps! Sharkey. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
More dvise from some gun friends, Leslie you should join this firearms list I'm on too :_)byBurtonsville Bob [Add to Address Book]
To: Firearms Discussion List Cc: bobcul@locul.com Subject: [FDL] Re: Cleaning Walther PPK/S and a 1911 Date: Apr 21, 2009 4:07 PM I am not familiar with the PPK series of pistols, but the 1911 is another matter. This is so common a firearm that there is lots of info on it. Just Google the phrase "1911 cleaning" and you will get most everything you need. Here is a somewhat detailed by-the-numbers check list. We use something like this in our "Care and Feeding of your Firearm" class for Women On Target. This is from memory, but here goes... 1) Establish a clear and protected work area (towel and pad if you do not want to ruin the dining room table). Remove ALL ammunition from the area and make sure the firearm is unloaded; magazine out, chamber empty. 2) Assemble your supplies; Rod, jags, brushed, patches, solvent, lubricant, wipe rags, Q-tips, old tooth bush(s), good lighting, magnifying lens, tweezers or small surgical clamp, and etc. You can really do with only the first few items, but good lighting and the others will come in handy. 3) Perform the basic field stripping down to the major components of; frame assembly, barrel, slide, recoil spring and components. Look at any of the field striping guides on the net. The steps are; A) Cock hammer and lock slide safety on (it keeps the slide from moving). B) Stand the firearm on its back end (hammer spur down) and carefully depress the recoil spring plunger (serrated surface in most cases) at the front below the barrel muzzle. Use the end of your thumb. Careful here, it's a nail breaker. C) With that plunger depressed about 1/8 inch you will be able to rotate the muzzle bushing tab (the tab with the half moon cut that snaps over the plunger) to the right or the left. It will go only a little bit in one direction (the wrong direction) and further in the other to fully clear the plunger. It will go far enough to pivot the half moon retaining lip totally out of the way of the plunger so it can be removed forward off of the recoil spring. You may have to hold the slide totally forward if the safety latch allows it to move backward at all so that you can rotate the muzzle bushing. WARNING TO FOLLOW. D) Warning, there is a big spring behind that plunger ready to launch parts into orbit. Rotate the bushing only far enough to get it out of the way, but still holding the plunger, so you can get a better purchase on the top of the plunger. With a better grip on the plunger, your thumb holding it in and that hand wrapped around the front of the firearm, carefully rotate the muzzle bushing out of the way and SLOWLY allow the plunger to be pushed from the frame, using you hand around the frame and then the plunger and then the spring that follows to keep it all in line, not bending the spring and not launching things. E) You have now gotten beyond the tricky part. Extract the plunger from the end of the spring, extract the spring from its recess (if it is very tight, that's ok, it will come out later) rotate and extract the barrel bushing from the front of the slide. F) Move the safety catch to off and with the firearm in a normal grip (do not squeeze the trigger to drop the hammer) move the slide rearward about 80% of its travel. You may have to jiggle the slide and/or frame to get things to move easily, the recoil spring is not keeping things in line at this point. G) With the slide moving to the rear look at the left side of the frame at the slide release button and the bottom edge of the frame. There is a rounded notch in the frame that will align with a tab of the same shape on the top of the slide release button. When they are aligned, you can press the assembly pin (the rounded bump) on the right side of the frame. This is an extension of the slide release button and pressing it out of the frame from right to left will allow for further disassembly. H) With this pin removed the slide will then move forward fully off the frame. Invert the slide and look at the barrel. Lift the recoil spring out of the way. Lift the chamber end of the barrel (press on it through the ejection port) just a bit and then slide it out of the front of the slide. The barrel link (the small pivoting chain link with a hole for the assembly pin) should be forward or lying as close as possible to the barrel so as to be able to clear the opening in the slide going forward. I) Carefully lower the hammer, do not let it snap down on the frame without the slide in place. Control it with your thumb or heal of the off hand while pressing the trigger. Do not attempt to put the safety catch on as it can over travel and cause problems. J) You are now ready to clean. 4) Carefully inspect all components and note where things are dirty. Wipe them as clean as possible with a rag. Inspect things as you go to look for signs of trouble (cracks or unusual wear). Make note of the wear points, you will be lubricating them later. 5) Assemble the cleaning rod, jag and patch wet with solvent. Pass it several time through the barrel. It should be a snug fit but not to tight, you want to thoroughly wet the barrel, not scrub it yet. 6) Fold one patch or a small piece of rag twice to make a small squarish pad and grip it by one corner with your tweezers or the surgical clamp to make a small mop. This works well to get into smaller than finger size areas. Moisten it (not too wet) with solvent and get to work. As it becomes soiled, start with a clean mop. You will quickly see where junk accumulates. 7) Next use a tooth brush or Q-tips or both, then the mop again to get the last bit of junk out of smaller areas and crevices. You don't have to brush or rub too hard, there are a few delicate parts inside you do not want to damage. About as hard as you would brush your teeth is OK. 8) Go back to the barrel and use a second moist patch through it. Take a look at the patch to see how much gunk comes out. We want the final patch to be nearly clean. Use the proper size brush, moistened with solvent and clean the barrel bore from chamber to muzzle in a full stroke, all the way out of the muzzle and then back all the way out of the chamber, about 10 full strokes in all. You may want to secure the barrel by gripping it firmly in your left fist (assuming right handed) and resting this on a rag on your bench and moving the rod with your right hand. Now apply one moist patch and inspect it, it should be very gunky. The brush loosened up a lot of stuff. Each time you switch from brush to patch and after each patch, wipe off the cleaning rod to keep as much of the debris as possible out of the barrel. Back to the brush and then patch until the last patch is almost clean, then one dry patch. NOTE; Place a small amount of your cleaning solvent directly onto the patch or brush, or into a small bowel (bottle cap) for dipping, do not contaminate your whole bottle by dipping a dirty brush into it. 9) Now it is time for inspection. Use the magnifying lens (I like a jewelers lope) and look at the muzzle and the first 1/8 inch of the barrel for signs of copper fouling. You have to get the light angle just right to see the gold/yellow copper. Now look down the barrel back lighted with a bright white flat light source (large area bulb or light on a flat white surface). Slowly bring the barrel closer and slowly rotate it looking for fouling deposits near were the lands and groves meet. You may see very small islands of fouling that you may or may not be able to get out, that is not serious. If you see lots of islands of crud, keep cleaning. You may want to use a copper solvent if you see obvious signs of copper in the barrel, or just to check for copper fouling. Moisten a patch with copper solvent, and swab the bore a few strokes, then let it sit. Don't be too anxious, it takes a few minutes to work, you can clean other things while you wait. Then swab with a clean patch. If you see blue/green stains on the patch, that is the copper being dissolved. If you repeat this and the stains are much lighter or practically none, that is clean enough. Like the minor carbon fouling, a little copper can remain without serious harm if you intend to shoot occasionally. You can clean more if you are going to store the firearm for a long time, then additional anti-rust measures are also required. 10 Inspect the barrel lugs above the chamber and the corresponding lugs in the slide. Clean them. Clean the inside of the slide, the side rails and groves (Q-tips work here) and all the nooks and crannies around the breech face, near the extractor and the frame top side. Clean the magazine well top end and the feed ramp area with a moist (not wet) mop and then a dry mop. You will be surprised how much crud blows back down the magazine well area. Inspect and clean the magazines while you are at it. Inspect the extractor area to be clean and the firing pin in the slide to move smoothly. Depress it from the rear about 1/8 inch with a small pin punch and feel for free travel with no grit. While depressed look at the tip exposed on the breech face to make sure it is a smooth rounded half-ball point. 11) Lubricate everything, if it moves, hit it. You can use any good quality high viscosity gun oil on most parts and grease on a few, like the rails, if you prefer. On the barrel, lightly lubricate the barrel link at its pivot point and inside of its hole (Q-tip here). Wipe the locking lugs with that moist Q-tip. On the slide, wipe the lugs and the top of the slide with a wet Q-tip. Look for wear areas and lube them. On the slide put a drop of oil at each end of the slide groves on each side and one drop (a small one please) in the detent notch at the rear of the underside and spread the oil lightly along the length of this surface (it will show wear marks). At the front of the slide wipe the area inside the muzzle with a wet Q-tip in the area where the barrel bushing locks in. On the frame place a small drop of oil at the detent plunger in front of the hammer and on the hammer moving links. You can place a very small amount of oil on the safety and slide release plungers but do not move the safety lever yet. On the slide release wipe the pin, the underside and the locking tab and its grove with oil. NOTE; If you over lubricate things, the excess will just drip out. If you under lubricate things, wear happens. I tend to over lubricate and then spend a lot of time wiping things down. 12) Reassembly; hold the slide inverted and insert the barrel into it from the front to the back with the barrel lugs down to mate up with the slide lugs. You may have to position the link forward and down. Slide the barrel in and out of the slide several times, about 2 inches or so, to distribute the lubricant to the lugs and top of the slide. Inspect the recoil spring guide rod, you may want to put a plastic recoil buffer on it at this time, it will save a bit of battering on the slide and frame. If you do this make sure the firearm still functions with your choice of ammo and look for problems ejecting and feeding. Lay the recoil guide rod onto the bottom of the barrel (facing up) with the moon notch straddling the barrel. Invert the frame and slide it onto the slide from the back of the slide to the front. Flip the firearm upright and continue to move the slide to the rear of the frame about an inch past the muzzle. Look for the hole in the barrel link to appear in the hole through the frame into which the slide release pin fits. When aligned, slid this pin in and through to the other side, raise the slide release button up until it touches the frame lower edge and then complete final alignment to the point that the release button can be raised into the notch in the side of the slide and pressed the last fraction of an inch through the frame. NOTE; The detent holding this button in place is quite stiff and pressing it gently with a very small screwdriver blade or the tip of a knife (or fingernail) can aid in getting the slide release button into its final correct position. Now move the slide fully forward and back to make sure every thing moves properly and the barrel is captured by the takedown pin through the barrel link (the barrel should move only slightly, drop down out of battery (free of the locking lugs) and stay forward as the slide moves back until it is stopped by the frame. Things will rattle around because the recoil spring and barrel bushing it not in place yet. Place the barrel bushing into the slide around the barrel, align the locking tab to the bottom, slide it fully into the slide. Move the recoil spring retaining lip fully to the side (one way will fully clear the spring) and insert the recoil spring into its recess and over the spring guide. Take a look at the spring before this and note if one end is ground or wound flat and the other is slightly smaller, tapered perhaps and also flat. The spring is in the right way if the larger end is out and the smaller end slips with some friction over the recoil spring guide. You will need to wiggle things about a bit to get the spring started over the guide. Depress the spring until you are satisfied it is seated on the guide and release it. It should extend an inch or so past the muzzle. Place the recoil spring cap over the extended end (just a bit of spring remains showing) and prepare to press it into place. Reverse your disassembly procedure by pressing with the thumb on top, guiding the plunger and spring with your cupped hand and preparing to rotate the barrel bushing with your free hand to capture the cap when it has been depressed slightly below the bushing lip. AGAIN, it is useful to place the safety lock on to keep the slide from moving during this procedure. Depress the plunger far enough to get the barrel bushing rotated so that the spring cap is caught firmly (but perhaps not yet fully) by it and then take a breather and reposition your grip to depress the cap again and get the retaining lip fully engaged around the spring cap. You are almost done. 13) Inspection; Disengage the safety and cycle the slide several times. Everything should be easy and smooth, only recoil spring tension and a few minor clicks and ticks from things moving inside. Grip the firearm normally and squeeze the trigger to drop the hammer. You DID remember to NOT have any ammo around, right? You still pointed it in a "safe" direction, right? The hammer should fall normally. Wipe down all the excess oil that is starting to appear at the bottom and the back of the slide. Cycle the slide several more times, note the added effort necessary to cock the hammer. Inspect the hammer face for traces of oil, there needs to be a little as it is sliding along the under slide of the slide to be cocked. Grip the firearm WITHOUT depressing the rear grip safety lever and try to press the trigger, use at least four times normal pressure. Nothing should happen. Release your grip and then take a normal grip and press the trigger to drop the hammer. Move the slide again several times, wipe down excess oil and engage the frame thumb safety. Try the trigger again to make sure the hammer does not fall. Finally, disengage the safety and pull the slide about 1/8 to 1/4 inch to the rear out of battery and press the trigger, the hammer should not fall. Return the slide to closed position and press the trigger to drop the hammer. Wipe off excess oil and store the firearm in a breathable case. 14) Easy, wasn't it. 60 minutesby Nancy : Guns Save livesFor those who didn't see the 60 Minutes show yesterday, or for those
who did, but would like to see it again or see some of the additional footage not shown on television, click here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/04/09/60minutes/main4931769.shtml?tag=topStories;secondStory or here: http://tinyurl.com/c8zmw9 -- If you compare the 60 Minutes show to the 20/20 show last Friday, there isn't really a comparison: 20/20 was a reprehensible "hit piece," plain and simple, showing the media at their very worst. 20/20 had an agenda and didn't want to drift off message by giving both sides equal time. 60 Minutes, while it had its flaws, did give gun owners pretty fair coverage. They spent a lot of time researching the issues and came up with some good questions that I'm glad they asked. As a bonus, they even asked the antis a tough question about Cho getting his gun from a licensed dealer and pointing out that gun shows had nothing to do with what happened at Virginia Tech. The antis aren't used to tough questions, as they are virtually always treated with kid gloves by the media. Colonel Massengill's comments reminds me of why I started laughing when a reporter last year made a comment about Massengill being on the pro-gun side. Certainly 60 Minutes didn't make that mistake. Massengill, during his interview, didn't point out, of course, that people from other states can buy long guns in Virginia, as long as their state considers that allowable. Not did he point out that they might be there to buy things such as ammunition, holsters, or just be window shopping. This is America and people do cross state lines to go shopping form time to time. Omar Samaha, the brother of a murdered student at Virginia Tech, keeps changing his story on how many guns he bought at the gun show (with $5,000 given to him by ABC) and other details of that event. On 60 Minutes and in front of the General Assembly, he says he bought a dozen guns in a hour. On 20/20 it was 10. On 20/20, Samaha said he was told by one private seller that for another $100, Samaha wouldn't have to show any ID. On 60 Minutes, that amount was now reduced to $15. Some who saw the show were left with the mistaken impression that Samaha bought his ten (or was it twelve or ??) guns from dealers and that it was also a dealer who said he would look the other way on Samaha not showing his ID for $100 (or was it $15?). It would have been much better if 60 Minutes had made it crystal clear that the guns were all bought from private sellers. It was telling when Lesley Stahl asked Virginia Tech survivor, Lily Habtu, about how the antis failed to close the "gun show loophole" when "You had so much going for you. You had the emotion..." Yes, emotion was the first thing that comes to mind because antis count on emotional appeal as their main leverage to justify gun control. One thing that drives me nuts about the segment is that gun organizations are always referred to as the "gun lobby," while antis doing the exact same thing, are not. And 60 Minutes fell into that mindset. Oh, and there is Senator Feinstein saying that police are outgunned. Too bad she didn't see the video of police with all kinds of weaponry responding to some of the recent shootings that were shown just before her interview. To say the police are outgunned is ridiculous. But, that's the good Senator for you. Feinstein then quickly jumps into the anti-gunner's staple: emotion. She starts talking about the funeral of four officers murdered by a paroled, illegally armed felon in California. Ms. Feinstein, gun owners don't like seeing such funerals any more than you do. But we don't like seeing funerals of regular citizens who have been murdered by a maniac in a gun-free zone, either. There was a factual error in the report. 60 Minutes made it sound like the Clinton Assault Weapon Ban had removed military lookalike rifles from the market, which is not true. Such guns were actually cheaper back then than they are currently. There is a segment on the 60 Minutes web site titled, "Guns and Ammo" that you might want to watch. Lesley asks me why anyone would need a . 50 BMG rifle... Finally, when the 60 Minutes crew arrived and look around the show, they were surprised that it wasn't anything like they expected. I guess they were looking for gun shows to be some kind of secret club for gun owners. At first they thought they were onto something. One of them noticed that everyone attending had some kind of tattoo. Then they realized that it was only the hand stamp that everyone got when they purchased a ticket and entered the show. When they told me about that incident, we all had a good laugh and the cameras began rolling shortly thereafter. Thanks to C&E Gun Shows and to Dominion Shooting Range for allowing their facilities to be used. Two of the C&E owners, Steve and Annette Elliott, are interviewed in the segment "The Call to Arms" on the 60 Minutes web site. -- Dave Workman, senior editor of Gun Week and communications Director for CCRKBA, wrote this article on the show: http://tinyurl.com/c8zmw9 The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security !

Lesson: Be in a position to defend yourself, or suffer ......by Nancy : Guns Save livesFrom John Farnam:
8 Apr 09 NY Incident, from a friend close to the investigation: "Without getting into data that is not yet in public view, I believe we can take two key learning points from this terrible incident: (1) This VCA scored an impressive KIA/WIA ratio. When handguns are involved, the ratio is usually 20/1, or even less. When heaver weapons are involved, and, as with the Columbine Incident in CO, police do not respond aggressively, the ratio is much higher, as we see! Responding officers did not make entry for forty-five minutes. That is a long time in a one-way fight! (2) However, even with the best of tactical plans, we police are rarely in a position to save anyone from violent criminals. We are oh-so good at chalking out bodies and collecting evidence. We positively excel at figuring out precisely what happened, and who did what. All of which is cold comfort for those at the pointy end of the spear, in the present tense!" Lesson: Be in a position to defend yourself, or suffer the consequences. It's that simple! Don't wait to be rescued, and don't worry about someone else's rules. There are no "degrees of dead," and you won't get to change channels nor go back to the beginning and reboot! We're going to see this again! /John 8 Apr 09 The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
Gun not required for horrific murderby nancyGun not required for horrific murder
************************************************** http://tinyurl.com/dbpbve foxnews.com Police: Man Fatally Stabs Sister, Decapitates 5-Year-Old On Birthday Monday , March 30, 2009 MILTON, Massachusetts -- A man on a rampage fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, decapitated his 5-year-old sister in front of a police officer and then turned toward his 9-year-old sister with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as "a killing field." There was no clear motive for the events that unfolded Saturday, the day after the 5-year-old's birthday, in a tiny Boston suburb that also is home to Gov. Deval Patrick. But there was no doubt at the carnage wrought by 23-year-old Kerby Revelus against his sisters in the two- family home they shared with their parents and grandmother. Five-year-old Bianca was killed as a cake for her birthday, which investigators believe was Friday, sat on the kitchen table. Nine-year- old Sarafina dialed emergency services and watched police shoot her brother as her elder sister, 17-year-old Samantha, lay dead on the floor. Sarafina was hospitalized Sunday with defensive wounds to her hands and stab wounds in her abdomen and one of her legs, police said. "In policing, we see the raw human emotion every day, but to think that a human being could afflict such an atrocious, violent act on his own family is unbelievable," Milton police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. said. "When I walked up to the first officer (on the scene), I could see the whole story right in his face. This just told me that this was something very bad." Saturday's attack came about 24 hours after Revelus had gotten into a fistfight with a man living next door, Wells said. "Blows were exchanged," he said. "I don't know the cause of it, but we're confident that did happen. He had been agitated in the hours that followed that, going into the day and last night." Investigators believe Revelus targeted Samantha, a senior at Milton High School, and fatally stabbed her with a household knife while their grandmother, who neighbors say lives on the first floor, was doing laundry in the basement. The children's parents, whose identities weren't immediately revealed, were away; their mother is a nurse at a Boston hospital, Wells said. Sarafina, a student at the Tucker Elementary School, just behind the house, called police around 5 p.m. local time. An officer on patrol in the neighborhood arrived within a minute, Wells said, and could hear an altercation inside as he reached the second floor. The police dispatcher operator tried to persuade Sarafina to open the door, but when she didn't the officer broke through. "As the officer entered the door, (Revelus) decapitated (Bianca) in front of him," Wells said. "He actually walked into a killing field. He walked into such carnage, as far as the atrocity of it, I've never seen it." Within moments, four officers were inside and two of them shot Revelus as he tried to get to Sarafina, Wells said. Revelus fell, still clutching the knife. Details about the number of shots and who killed Revelus were pending the outcome of an autopsy Sunday. Revelus had recently served jail time on a gun charge, Wells said, but the details would not be released until courts opened Monday. Neighbors said Revelus was in a car that was pulled over by police and from which one occupant threw a gun into a sewer. Police had been called to the family's house in 2004 after a domestic violence report that Revelus had punched a woman living there, Wells said. A neighbor, Norm Walsh, said his daughter Kate Walsh, a New Hampshire police officer, reported hearing two shots as she went outside to bring in groceries from the family car. Moments later, a blood-covered officer emerged carrying Sarafina, seeking towels to stanch her bleeding. "It's shocking to me," said Norm Walsh, whose son is the same age as Revelus. "He played a lot of pickup hoop in the driveway." Walsh said the family members had lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years and were warm. They were of Haitian descent, as are many residents in the neighborhood, where Creole is spoken alongside English. "The family is a solid family. Both parents worked; good kids. Completely makes no sense," Walsh said. Samantha's classmates referred to her by her nickname, Princess, and remarked at her grace, class and friendliness. She had been one of about 20 students who had been at the high school Saturday afternoon to rehearse for a poetry jam on Thursday. Saturday morning, Samantha also had practiced for a school fashion show. "She had a stage presence like you couldn't believe," classmate Kassi Stein said. Sobbing, she added: "She had just a soft voice and everyone would lean in to hear what she was saying." In one of the poems Samantha was to recite, "Acquaintance," she wrote of the strength of women in the face of "ignorant souls." The poem closed, "So what lousy wind brought you here? What values you offer? She's a woman, a queen, a goddess. Don't treat her like any other." A two-hour grief counseling session was held at the school Sunday afternoon and will be offered Monday to students and employees. The officers involved in the case were placed on administrative leave and were receiving counseling from the Boston Police Department. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |

Pelosi: 'We Want Registration'; Holder: 2A Won't 'Stand in the Way'; SAF: 'Gloves are off'by NancyPelosi: 'We Want Registration'; Holder: 2A Won't 'Stand in the Way'; SAF: 'Gloves are off'
Date: Apr 8, 2009 2:21 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS RELEASE PELOSI: 'WE WANT REGISTRATION'; HOLDER: 2A WON'T 'STAND IN THE WAY'; SAF: 'GLOVES ARE OFF' BELLEVUE, WA Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on April 7 acknowledged that gun registration is on her agenda, days after Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters in Mexico that the Second Amendment would not stand in the way of administration plans to crack down on alleged gun trafficking to Mexico. These are alarming remarks from Speaker Pelosi and Attorney General Holder, said Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb. It appears that the Obama administration and Capitol Hill anti-gunners have dropped all pretences about their plans for gun owners rights, and it looks like the gloves are coming off. Pelosis revelation came during an interview on ABCs Good Morning, America. While insisting that Congress never denied the gun rights of American Citizens, Pelosi told Roberts, We want them registered. We dont want them crossing state lines Gottlieb noted that citizens rights do not stop at state lines. But that doesnt really matter, he observed. History has shown that around the world, registration has always led to confiscation. In Mexico, according to the Wall Street Journal, Holder was asked if the administration might encounter constitutional issues as it tries to crack down on alleged gun trafficking. His response: I dont think our Second Amendment will stand in the way of efforts we have begun and will expand upon. These comments belie administration promises and Democrat rhetoric that party leaders respect the rights of law-abiding Americans to own the firearm of their choice, Gottlieb said. They imposed registration of semi-autos in Pelosis California and it led to a ban, but it certainly didnt disarm criminals, like the convicted felon who killed four Oakland police officers last month. We know from Holder that the Obama administration wants to renew the nationwide ban on such firearms, but that wont prevent crime, either. The administration and Congressional anti-gunners have declared war on gun rights, Gottlieb said. The press seems deliberately blind to the statements from Pelosi and Holder, who blame our gun rights for their incompetence in dealing with crime. More than 90 million gun owners havent hurt anybody, and they are tired of being treated like criminals. The Second Amendment IS Homeland Security ! |
EDITORIAL: Anti-reason on gunsby NancyEDITORIAL: Anti-reason on guns
When Tim Kaine campaigned for Virginia governor in 2005, he ran an ad implying that former National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston was praising him. His campaign claimed that "Tim Kaine strongly supports the Second Amendment." Once he won office, Mr. Kaine vetoed one gun bill after another that would have helped Virginians protect themselves from criminals. Unfortunately, this past week, Mr. "strong Second Amendment supporter" Kaine vetoed all five pro-self-defense bills sent to his desk. His intransigence endangers public safety. Hopefully, the General Assembly's veto-override session, which starts today, can correct those mistakes. All five vetoed bills passed with overwhelming bipartisan support - indeed, all but one bill got at least two-thirds support in both the Senate and the House. The governor knows he can be easily overriden. Showing how out-of-touch he is on this issue, Mr. Kaine vetoed some bills that even passed unanimously. So overrides seem likely unless Mr. Kaine can flip enough Democrats to sustain his vetoes. Take Mr. Kaine's veto of the bill that would let retired law enforcement officers carry their guns in restaurants that serve alcohol. These are retired officers who have served in law enforcement for at least 10 years. They already have been qualified under federal law to carry a concealed firearm, and they would not be allowed to drink alcohol when they are armed. The Democrat-controlled Senate passed the bill unanimously and 85 percent of the Republican-controlled House voted for it. Yet Mr. Kaine keeps repeating the mindless, inapplicable slogan "Guns and alcohol don't mix." More than 30 right-to-carry states around the nation allow law-abiding citizens - not just retired police with 10 years' experience - to carry permitted concealed handguns in restaurants that serve alcohol. There is no evidence of any problems. Yet when asked, Mr. Kaine's press office told The Times that "it is irrelevant what is the evidence in any other state. This is Virginia, and that is all the governor cares about." Despite repeated requests for evidence, none was given. When The Times offered to give the governor's office more time to find evidence for the Mr. Kaine's position, the press office said there was "no reason to check" if there was evidence. This strikes us as a remarkably anti-rational perspective. When people's safety is on the line, facts should matter. Retired officers are volunteering to protect Virginians for free, essentially serving as undercover officers. But that is not good enough for Mr. Kaine. The governor trusts active-duty officers, but somehow, as soon as they retire - even after years of service - they are no longer trustworthy. We have a news flash for the governor: Crimes occur in restaurants. Uniformed police are extremely important, but they almost always get to the scene after the crime has been committed. Indeed, as research shows, these gun-free zones actually attract criminal attacks because criminals know they have less to fear from potential victims. Another problem with banning retired police from carrying their permitted guns in restaurants is that this can prevent them from carrying their guns elsewhere - eviscerating the concealed-handgun law. Mr. Kaine's veto of the bill to let law-abiding citizens with concealed-handgun permits in restaurants is just as mistaken. There are obvious benefits from letting people protect themselves and others, and with all the experience from other states, there is no evidence that there are any risks. Mr. Kaine's vetoes of the other bills make no more sense. The House unanimously passed a bill that lets concealed-handgun permit holders take their safety course online, and 75 percent of the Senate also voted for the bill. Virginia lets driver-safety courses be taken over the Internet. Even if the governor doesn't get it yet, the General Assembly at least seems to understand that we live in the age of computers. Finally, there are no published empirical studies by economists or criminologists showing that one-gun-a-month purchase restrictions reduce any type of violent crime rate. There is no crime reduction in states with the laws or in their neighboring states. We wish Virginia would join the other 47 states without this law, but Mr. Kaine vetoed a bill that affected only active-duty military personnel - allowing them to buy more than one gun. Does Mr. Kaine really have a problem trusting soldiers with guns? Mr. Kaine is more than just out of step with Virginians on public safety. The governor's facts-be-damned attitude worries us. Evidence should matter to public servants. We hope the legislators stick to their guns, resist the governor's pressure and override all five of Mr. Kaine's vetoes.
