We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

Hi Rose!

December 19 2007, 7:27 PM

Welcome! My daughter Kaelin is going to start preschool in January. She also doesn't really talk and we haven't had much luck with signing. We are just starting to work on potty training and will let you know how that goes. She's my first girl, so even though I've potty trained twice now, the girl thing seems to be a bit different. Kaelin doesn't have DS, but my older son Aaron does. He is what brings me to this board. He's 8 now and in 2nd grade.

Kaelin has global developmental delays though, we believe she has verbal apraxia, but no formal diagnosis yet. There are a ton of wonderful moms here with loads of experience and advice. It is a wonderful community here. The "General Forum" is the place that gets the most action here and where everyone posts daily.

Aaron also potty trained at 4 years old. Some kids here are successful before that, some later. It just depends on the child really. We used pull ups with Aaron and it seemed to take forever. I know one mom here gave me the advice to skip those with Kaelin (she also has low muscle tone) as she thought those hindered the process with the low tone, so that is how we are going to try it with her.

I'm glad you found us! I look forward to getting to know you and your daughter!

Vicki, mom to
Aaron, Jacob and Kaelin

Hi Rose! I just wanted to say welcome. I haven't been through any of those issues (yet!) since Johnny has just turned three but if you figure anything out, I'm all ears since those are stages we will be in soon.

Yes, pop on over to the "General Forum" link that is listed on the left and introduce yourself and maybe ask over there. This one only seems to get posts in small waves. Hope to see you around more.

We use the Picture Exchange Program. Emma does sign, but she has begun to use this at school and we are reinforcing it at home. It has helped. Emma is not potty trained, but we follow the same procedure that school does. However, we don't try all day long...only before bath time. She has to site on her potty until I count to ten. Then we put her in the bath tub. She has only gone twice and we have been doing this since May. She does tell us when she is poopy, but that just started in the last few months.
