mark my word, Nov 2/06 will go down in history as the day that started the end of the Brodsky owned Prince George Cougars franchise.
Brodsky and company think that this move shows that they are serious about bringing a winner to town. I think it just proves that they are in complete disarray. Short of mental or physical abuse, I can't believe that you only give a coach one year to try and fix the mess that has plagued this organization for over 6 years. What is even more unbelievable is that you can the coach, but continue to praise the guy that hand picked him to lead your organization! Was Vandekamp that bad? Maybe he was and he needed to go. But if that was the case, what about Thompson? He's the guy that apparently wanted him for 2+ years! What about holding him accountable for his decision to bring him in? What a cowardly chain of events that transpired here today.
Today, if it wasn't driven home already, Brodsky has proven without a shadow of a doubt that his allegiance is with his friends and family first and foremost. Winning championships will always take second place to that. If people are comfortable supporting an organization with that philosophy (in a business all about winning), then they should expect less than stellar results. If people want to spend their money and support such a business, that is their right, however, they should not be upset when other people choose not to support such a formula.
Barring a miracle of epic proportions, I don't see how this team can live up to pre-season expectations given what has occured today. The chance of finding a coach that isn't already employed that can pull all these guys together for a championship run is slim to none. The chance of finding a high quality coach that will be willing to put themselves and their family into this situation is even lower. The chance that the fans will return after this year, when the team is expected to be in full re-building mode, is likely lower yet.
Yup, I think this is the start of the end folks. Within the next few years, I can't see a Brodsky owned team occupying CN Centre. The circumstances are just too large for them to overcome IMHO. Whether that means that WHL hockey will be gone as well is up in the air. One thing is CERTAIN, you CAN'T blame the fans for how this will play out. Eventually, even die hard fans run out of patience.
