Absolutely painful game to watch last night. No leadership being displayed whatsoever. I do know that some of the players have pretty bad colds right now...but just goes to show the lack of depth out there...these guy's can't take a night off and wear suits coz there is nobody left to sub in unless they are called up.
The whole coaching thing ... I don't agree with KM's coaching philosophies, tho I do think he tries to motivate the team, they are just not responding. The 19 and 20 year olds do not show up for any of the games except for Stone. Stone works hard every game. And Later usually works very hard but always seems to have bad luck in terms of coughing up the puck. I personally think Later has "spunk" and is one of the few who can get the team fired up.
I think it is time to consider splitting Fehr and Stone up. Yes, they play great together, but it would help them to not play with each other because after their tenure in Brandon, they won't be playing together. They can't rely so much on knowing how the other plays. And Konsorada and Monych...I haven't got a single good thing to say about them...I would trade either one of those two in a heartbeat to get Boldt back on D.
So...I think if you traded Fehr, Konsorada or Monych, or some combination of the three with a rookie or two...maybe even Nichol...get some solid 18 or 19 year olds...You could keep Fehr...have Stone wear the C on line 1...Fehr on line 2...spread some of the 3rd and 4th line around the 1st and 2nd line...Sandell played great with Fehr in pre-season and I think Reaves, Topilko or even Strauts could compliment Stone and let Leblanc lead a 3rd line....just change things up
While we want to win this year...we need to consider upcoming years as well and plan for depth. I suggest Nichol for a trade only because I think Plante is the heir apparent. But Nichol is also good...having both of them on the same team doesn't allow them to develop fully. Let Nichol go be #1 on another team...let Plante be #1 for Brandon...and either get a 20yr old #2 to help grow plante and then bring a 16 yr old up next year to learn from Plante.
We need somebody who is hungry to win the memorial cup. Coz these guys sure aren't. The teams that win the cup...they aren't just a 5 player team. They are 20 player teams and everyone shows up to play. If they don't, then the leaders on the team deal with it. I don't see anyone dealing with it in Brandon...especially so long as a tie is acceptable.
