Kenneth - I very much doubt that you are as tall as I am. In the old days finding suitable equipment was the biggest problem for the very tall golfer. Overly Long clubs were unwieldy and most manufacturers didn't offer severely upright lies so that the tall golfer could play with standard equipment. I bought my own loft/lie machine to adjust irons (forged only) by 6* and I used to order custom bored heads for my woods. There is virtually no way to play decent golf with clubs that lie too flat by more than a couple of degrees, although one can play with too upright clubs without too much difficulty. With the modern large headed metalwoods I have yet to find a Driver or Fairway Metal that is upright enough and no one custom makes these clubs, nor can they be adjusted. The manufacturers and designers that I've spoken with all say that the lie of a Driver doesn't matter, but they are completely mistaken when it comes to clubs that lie too flat. Only a very tall golfer who also has either proportionately long legs or short arms would know this.
Over the years I've successfully swung from very flat to very upright, and everything in between. I don't think it makes any difference. It's a preference when we are younger and maybe an accomodation for deteriorating joints when we are older.
