I am actually in the middle of re-working my swing. I have taken ideas and thoughts from different instructors, books, and videos. Here's what I have learned.
I am NOT a 'system' golfer. By that, I mean, I cannot use a particular instructor's swing system exclusively... it just does not fit my 'natural swing'. I have tried HSS, IMA, some Blake, and obviously CG. I have gotten to the point where IMA fits me pretty well, but I struggle with some of the IMA patterns - mostly the toe up to toe up requirement of the swing. I tend to fade the ball a little too much with driver and the longer clubs with IMA. I just don't think I 'release' the club the way it should be with IMA. I hit the ball pretty darn solid and far with HSS but had some other issues. I like several of Blake's ideas... including the club being square to the arc... I think that type of swing fits me the best. I believe my swing, like Blake's actual swing (not what he believed)... that there is a slight opening of the clubface at some point in the backswing, hence, the club is not toe up, but not square either - perhaps what might be called 'slightly shut'. I find that I get better results when I don't have to 'release' the club fully on the downswing...the toe up position if you will. I like the open stance of Blake - although not as open as he recommends.
I have watched all of Don Trahan's videos on the peakperformance site and really like his ideas. The 3/4 backswing with the limited shoulder turn in my opinion is almost exactly Blake-like. Trahan advocates a more straight back - straight thru clubhead path like Blake. He does think the club should be toe up on the backswing but that's an example of where I play better with the Blake thought of 'square' at that point. I like Trahan's thought on the cocking or should I say lack of cocking of the wrist's in the backswing. In summary... I think he is real good for a CG instructor.
I will say that I don't know if Blake's idea of the legs being the power source is true - actually I currently believe they are not true. I do like his right elbow position at both address and impact... I think it really promotes a solid strike.
With all your observations. In addition, I have always
felt tight and on the edge when I used Blake's swing. I never
could capture Richard Wax's ease of motion. Marrying
Blake with Trahan's concepts allows me to feel that freedom.
Curiously, letting go of the idea of powering the swing
with my legs lets me get my legs into the swing.
cd,
By "...lets me get my legs into the swing," do you mean legs providing some of the swing power or legs accommodating upper body action...or both? Jim
