Hi CD - Holmes downdate

June 22 2009, 7:42 AM

Actually, there is no Holmes' update happy.gif If anything, I still a Stack and Tilter. The only connection to Holmes' is that I'm using a Cobra 454 driver - the kind he used to play. It has a stock Mitsubishi 45 gram shaft, which is probably about as light a shaft as is being made. Picked it up on ebay and think it is a great driver.

With the driver my practice swing is to stand straight up and slowly turn my shoulders as far as possible;and, try to get another inch of turn with the right shoulder. Then swing on the horizontal plane. This attempt at another inch of turn helps slow down the transition when you actually do swing. Most of the time my shoulder turn will be too short and fast, unless I focus on making a full turn. The result is that I'm hitting the driver about as far as I can for my age, etc.

During the real swing, I try to straighten the left leg and release the clubhead at impact.

Finally, the real key for me,especially with the irons, is to feel I'm "swinging out" toward right field.

Speaking of

S&T.

I've got this feeling that if Phil modified his swing to
be like Weir's he would be unbeatable.

Mike Weir controls his ball better than anyone. Always
in balance. Every time Phil swings you hold your breath
unless it's a wedge.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the Butch Lumpkin video--inspiring fellow. Since Butch has no arms, he must get the power for his (average) 260 yard drives from his body. Is Butch's example applicable to the long running argument re source(s) of power for the golf swing?

By the way, was Phil playing with only one driver in his bag on Sunday of the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot? He made a double bogey on 18 after a wild drive off the tee. (Side note: Colin Montgomie also made a double bogey on 18 and lost his chance to win after hitting his drive in the fairway.) Jim

Power of the golf swing

June 25 2009, 10:52 PM

Yes, it does seem to be appropriate to that discussion. Obviously,a big part of the power is generated by the body rotation.
I recently purchased a weighted club, the "Power Hitter," and it forces you to use your body (or you won't make a solid hit.)

It doesn't do any good to hold your breath. He's going to hit it in the rough or the woods, especially if it's late Sunday (or Monday) in the U.S. Open. Jim
