Mrs. Van Daan tells Anne that she is too worldly for someone so young; that
upon growing up she will be bored with life because she has learned too
much about it. While in Anne's case, I disagree, knowledge is a good
thing, experience can be jading. What are doing to oursleves by our
sensationalizing of everything? Are we truly gaining by piercing every
veil for the young? Isn't there something to be said for childhood
innocence and naivete? If we kept more of that, would the world be a
nicer, kinder place?
I think, despite her thirst for knowledge, Anne held on to those qualities
and that is what makes her work so moving. That throughout all she
suffered, she kept what so many of us are eager to grow out of. We regret
our desire later, but awareness once gained is almost impossible to be rid
of.
