      After reading the first few chapters of the book, I was struck by how much

      appearence plays a part in the everyday life of these people. Appearence

      on many levels.

      Jim wants to have the appearence of being an aristocrat without actually

      being one. Savannah is a town where appearences matter, remember the

      stories about how people cover things up.

      Also, despite the intergration movement, the divide between black and white

      is still very prominent.

      Just a thought.
