The captains of the Blood Tide and the Black Crown knew something was amiss when the heavy fog rolled over their decks and obscured vision. It was almost enticing, for piracy in such conditions would be exquisitely easy against undefended merchant ships. However, the veteran sea dogs of the two Stymese pirate vessels are wise. They know that a nautical ambush could also be painfully easy in such conditions.
The captains fear an attack, and it does come - but there are many decisive factors on the side of the pirates. For one, the merchant ships were not attacked, that caution was the first order of business.
Secondly, the ships split apart, navigating through the halo of mist in a direct slice towards the outside of the Setrian "killzone" that the armada had set up.
Using the thickened mist to their advantage, the pirate vessels will be able to evade Setrian pursuit virtually unscathed. With ships unable to see one another well at all, the use of ballistae or, even worse, catapults will be virtually impossible. And unless the Setrian navy is suicidal they will be spaced too far apart to maintain any semblence of pursuit within the fog walls. Otherwise, a multitude of collisions could cause a nautical disaster for the Setrus League - who relies upon its ships for power.
Ironically, engaging a rival navy is possibly easier than trying to hunt down two of the swiftest pirate ships on the high seas. Especially when they've gone in opposite directions.
Once out of the fog, the Blood Tide, who went West, towards the Urosian mainland, will be underneath the escort of scores of Mohanese vessels. The Black Crown, which sailed East, will be ripe for pursuit - if any fast Setrian scouts want to play the game of death with her captain.
