We're heading up Opeongo to Prouxl on May 5th. Theres only two of us and one boat, so if anyone wants to double up on a watertaxi to cut costs, let me know. We're heading out of Hamilton at 6am so we'd get there around 10.

I don't need a water taxi, but I do like your enthusiasm and early planning for a new season in Algonquin!
You rock!

Heh thanks alot Bo, I spend the winter months anticipating spring and summer. Hopefully I'll have your level of knowledge about the park some day, and at 22 I've got lots of years to catch up. You rock as well!

Tell the outfitter you are willing to share. Also as you get closer to May you may have more takers.
When I call I ask first if there are any less than full shuttles. There usually are.
Never had to pay full freight yet.

Orrrrrrrrrrr........... save the $$$$$ and paddle... I wish they banned motor boats in all AP lakes. You have no idea how anoing it is to stay at Ope and hear that @%@!$#@ water taxi buzz by every 30 minutes for the entire day.

You have to pick the right spot on the lake and you will be in peace and solitude. Trust me, it CAN be found on Opeongo.

Yeah I wouldn't be caught paddling Opeongo in early May...I booked the taxi, and told them that Im willing to share and to move times if necessary. They said Im the first to book so far heh heh. Ive stayed on Opeongo...leave it to the boats as long as they stay out of the backcountry. You have to portage for solitude, and thats how I like it.

Hey Pat,
What are your possible return dates? Are you coming back through Opeongo on the taxi? I was thinking about taking a solo trip around that time, also departing from Hamilton...

Paddle to the sea ( ooops) I meant the big O
February 9 2008, 12:56 AM
OK, I was getting a bit excited
In May, especially if you are new to AP take the TAXI. If an old
hand, then the TAXI is a good option still
Otherwise fools dare to canoe ( Please Note: Tomek I said CANOE)
where the angels fear to paddle
Otherwise... At other times, paddling the Big O when water temps
are surviable is an acceptable option. I still look forward to
spending a week crusing and camping the big O.
Yes there is an "A" in Racoon
BTW: Dock to either arm/end of lake ( bad weather/wind) is 4-6 hours)
is doable and best done with caloric snacks

Still going?

May 5th? There are 2 of us also heading up that way. I think we're going Monday - Friday. Is it possible to "share" the cost?

When to reserve?

Pat
Just curious, have you reserved your taxi yet. Are you using Opeongo or Algonquin.
We're taking a taxi on May 11 into Dickson, and out from same on the 17th. Just waiting for the weather to "break" before I reserve!

Hey Gino
We have the taxi booked for 9 or 930 AM. If you're up there early enough we could share and cut costs. What loop are you planning to do? We're headed to big crow for the first night.
TSM - We're using Algonquin Outfitters this year, but both are good. I prefer Op's wooden boats.

Thanks Pat
I was leaning towards Opeongo, from the recommendations I have read him in the past!
Have a great trip.

Mon. May 5TH... Time??
March 30 2008, 8:34 PM
Hey Pat, We will likely be there, ready to go by 7am for sure. I'd guess that 9am or so is the earliest Taxi.?? I'm coming from Guelph way and the other guy is coming from Sudbury. He's organizing things from his end BUT if it IS possible to share a Taxi I'll let him know...?
I'm pretty sure we decided on Hogan Lake.

Mon Mat 5
March 31 2008, 2:10 PM
We come up every spring from Kitchener and if I were you I would count on a little longer than 4 hours to get there. There are always delays of some sort like washroom breaks coffee breaks or gas not to speak of traffic so I would count on 5 hours travel time. We are going in 3 daye earlier ice permitting and we have 6 already

Hey Ray,
What do you mean "6"? You've given yourself "6 hours travel time"? I am planning, and usually drive up the night before and sleep in the vehicle. ... wake up take care of the paperwork ( both) at the access office. Gino

Hey Gino
We're most likely going up the night before as well, we booked the water taxi for 9 (or 930 can't remember) to have time to eat breakfast, do the paperwork and not be rushed in the morning, or if necessary we could leave early that morning and make it in time. If you're heading to Hogan, we can surely share a taxi up to Prouxl as it will cut the cost in half. Email me at Pgidley@gmail.com and we can work out the details.
