I use EGBs; the older ones if you can find them. It's a spoon. Don't use the Lucky Strike look-a-like. It doesn't work.

Trout

March 20 2008, 8:47 AM

Hey Rob,

A variety of baits will work to pick up some decent trout.

The most popular ones are probably spoons. (EGB's, Williams, etc)
They are best used when trolling.

Also, Mepps (in-line) spinners, small Rapala's and Kwik-fish also work well.

The fish should still be (generally) shallow in May, so they should be on the hunt for food after their spawn.

Good luck!

I love this question, it comes up every year, and every year I go out and add more lures to my already full tackle box. I know that I'm almost undoubtedly going to put on an EGB and stick with it until I catch something, but that doesn't stop me from picking up more and different lures "just in case".

If you want to take a look, my list of favourites, including pictures is available here:

Now, did someone mention Kwik-fish? I thought about those before, maybe I'll pick up a couple this year. Any recommendations on colour? How deep do they run?

Does anyone use the big trolling flashers when canoe fishing?

Kwik-fish

Hey Rob,

Ya, the good ole kwik-fish!

I have had good success with black (w/silver flake), and the standard silver baits.
For such an old lure, man they have great action!

Hi Rob,

Try Panther Martin spinners for both lakers and specks:

#6 gold or silver with hair for lakes
#4 same pattern for rivers

Be sure to save some fish for me.

Hey Rob,

THere have been many past threads identifying people's fave Brook / Lake Trout lures, some quite recent. A little searching will find loads of opinions.

Regarding Jamie's statement: 'The fish should... be on the hunt for food after their spawn.'
Not sure if his intent was to imply that Lakers/Brookies spawn in the spring, but in any case they do not. They spawn in the Fall (Oct/Nov) which explains why fishing for them in the Park is closed. Lakers/Brookies are Charrs (e.g. genus Salvelinus), and like all Charrs (e.g. Grayling, Artic), spawn in the Fall. True 'Trout' such as Rainbows, Browns (e.g. genus Oncorhynchus), spawn in the Spring.

Regarding your question on Raps: I'm a huge fan of Raps, i've caught pretty much every sport fish native to Canada on them. My biggest Walleye, Laker and SmthBass have each been caught on Rapala models.

For Laker fishing in May, when the fish are shallow, a good selection of Rap models such as #5, 7, 9 original floaters; #11, 13 jointed floaters; various sized (2 3/4, 3 1/2") Tail Dancers (keep the Deep Tail Dancers for Summer); X-rap for casting, etc coupled with the appropriate lite spinning gear and should do you well. I never use weight, replace the hooks with Gamaktzu or equivalent and use the Rap knot directly without using the little clips. Always trolling unless I see them breaking surface or catch a few in a tight area. Color choices: silver/black, blue/black, flu orange/gold, perch, vampire, purple irredescent, firetiger, black/gold, etc. Lakers aren't all that picky - some days tho they do prefer chartreuse, most days the natural silver/gold colors work best.

I generally stay away from spoons unless I'm running my downrigger on the canoe in the Summer and use the flasher with flutter spoons or floating rap with that setup. Trolling spoons for Spring lakers, for me anyway, is not as productive as stick baits, they tend to result in more tangled lines (even with keel sinker and/or plastic keel + bbearing swivel).
I also use non-Rap stick baits in the Spring with great (and at times greater) success then Raps - namely the Bagleys brand. Have to order them on-line though, not many places u can buy them in Canada.

I have had most of my success in the park with Mepps spinners with hair and I usually tip with a worm. I hae tried the others, but i always end up back with that.

Brookies

March 23 2008, 11:00 AM

Brookie fishing I use different rig and lures. Everything is smaller and lighter, and I'll use small spoons casting or trolling but my fave casting lure for brookies are the Rooster Tails - cover water fast with these and the brookies (and rainbows) love 'em. For more info on gear/presentations/etc on river fishing specs you can see this post:

"Lakers/Brookies are Charrs (e.g. genus Salvelinus), and like all Charrs (e.g. Grayling, Artic), spawn in the Fall"

Well, I learned something new today! I just assumed that all the trout species did their spawning in the Spring!
