ice thickness and water content in snow on ground

As I stated in another post, the ice thickness on the lakes around Ottawa is only 1/2 of what it was last year at this time.

Hopefully, Algonquin is the same and the possibility still exists for many lakes to be ice free opening day.

Also, I heard on radio yesterday that the water content of the snow on the ground is also way, way higher than it has been in previous years. Means
when it does melt, lots of water flowing down rivers, creeks, etc. into lakes which should help them become ice free.

Hi Bo,
We're hoping the water content is high as well. We are going up tomorrow and are hoping to be able to walk on the hard packed crust...everywhere.
I too am still optimistic. I figure the snow has insulated the lakes and because we haven't had a cold winter, the ice mustn't be as thick as in previous years.
Soon we'll know!!! Only 5 weeks to the trout season in Algonquin!!
