Since many are in the deep throws of planning
that first trip and regardless will find themselves
in a pitched tent somewhere in the month ahead

It should be noted that a GUARANTEED trout meal
and take home fish is always possible regardless of ICE out delays,
Hordes of Bugs and snow or what ever other reason you have for
your natural ability to catch trout being jinxed

Just think out of the box
Trout Farms ( easily accessible from return trip from Whitney area lakes)

Trout farms are stocked ponds / small lakes at which you pay for the fish that you
catch.
I am sure that this approach will not appeal to many of the dedicated fishermen; but, they do seem to be popular
Most trout farms have an open season year round and this way you can have your
guaranteed fresh trout regardless of that hurricane/tornado or lightning strike .

Fish farms

March 25 2008, 8:32 PM

I took my kids to one a few years ago, the "fishing" was good and it was fun watching them land a big one, however when we cooked um up later they seamed to have a "earthy" taste. Anyone else?

I have a friend who helped manage and was part-owner of an Aqaculture facility in Sooke, BC. They raised Atlantics, and fed them pellets for their entire lives. Despite sharing their enclosures with yummy 3-6" wild herring (they'd come go as they please through the netting), they wouldn't look at them twice. They were geared soley on pellets, nothing else. I suspect the pond fish are likewise fed some form of processed feed while they are young, and some businesses may continue to feed the older ones the same diet. This will obviously impact their taste. Much depends on how big the fish are when released into the ponds, what diet they have been and currently are on and what natural food source they have in the lake to chow-down on during the winter.

I know very little about fresh-water raised pond fish, and I've never fished one.

Hey Rob W.

Did your kids ever own up to those fish they borrowed from
me for their Rock Lake picture with that string of Specks

I have only ever taken kids to such places.. been tempted
to stop on the way home from AP a few times when it appeared
that we were going home with Zippo or the $1000 a pound trout

But , truth be told ... I prefer:
Capt Highliner Cod
and
Capt Morgan Rum

P.S. Still waiting for my Canoe to unthaw while others are worried
about snow on the portages
