Ope Canoe taxi

Just wondering... I'm planning a trip for april 26 to may 1st. I'm pondering a few different route ideas. One of which is starting at Opeongo. I have no desire to paddle through Ope in April. Anyone know how soon after ice out the outfitters get the taxies on the water?

I was going to make the phone call but thought I'd try here first and save some long distance charges.

I wanted to take the taxi to the Happy Isle portage, base camp on Merchant and day trip to BT, Happy Isle, maybe Redrock.

Any info would be great.

ps. I'm not allowing myself to think about the possibility that ice will not go out before opening day so please don't mention it. Just the thought gives me indigestion..

I really don't want you to have indigestion on a beautiful Friday afternoon, but iceout on Opeongo has been a week or so after iceout on Canoe. Normally I try to get up on Opeongo a week after the opener and have had fresh ice form overnight even a week later. This year I am not even considering going before the 2nd weekend of May, I sure hope I am wrong, but you should have a back up plan.

More on Ope Ice

March 28 2008, 7:48 PM

There may be and then again, there may not be ICE.
It's all weather dependent.
The earliest I was on Opeongo was May 8. and we encountered ice at the south end of North Arm (the rest of the lake paddling north was OK) and started to chip away at it with our paddles (it was about 1/4" thick or so), then, a boat came by and opened a passage for us!
So, you may be lucky!

Opening Day on Opeongo

March 28 2008, 10:42 PM

We were luck a few years back in that Opening Day the
Spoule Bay was ice free ( mostly because it could
not get wind moved past Bates Island). Then again
canoeist could go beyond there as well

Bk and I mumbled something to the rental guy
about wanting something he didn't have as I am
sure those three foot white caps had nothing to do
with us sheepishly getting into vehicle and eventually
ending up on Galareiry wit boat and motor

Actually, we had planned just base camoing on
Opeongo and day tripping the two lakes just across the
bay from the docks but I don't think we would have made
it more than 10' from the dock

Galareiry turned out great til the ice rain on way out
but it was a great discovery that Bk has returned to
a few times and it's worth the trip if you want easy
access and feeling like its farther interior than it is

Ice free all depend on wind . We were icebound by
wind sifted ice on Cedar once and come morning the Lake was
clear sailing

There is always Rock lake when all else fails and lots of
day trips from there are possible.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that iceout on Opeongo usualy came that much later than on smaller lakes. So that means I can rule out Opeongo. Progress!!

Thanks for the invite Bo, although I think you might not remember offering it. lol. But my better half is interested in a 'romantic' weekend in the woods... just the 2 of us. Boun-Chika-Woun-Woun!!

I digress...

MELT DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't give up on your idea for Opeongo, the weather might surprise all of us, just have a back up plan.
