Planning to go early to mid-July for my first trip to Algonquin. Looking for a good 4-5 day canoe/hiking route somewhere off of HWY 60, in the southwestern portion of the park. I have looked through some of the trip logs, but would really appreciate any tips for a 1st timer. Thanks!!

What kind of things are you hoping to experience on your trip? The advice you receive will be more rewarding if it's tailored to such things.

Looking for a nice campsite for a couple of days to act as a base for some good hiking trails, in particular, but open to ideas. Really just looking to spend some time in the great outdoors.

Combined Canoe/ Hike Route

One of the better locations in the Algonquin to combine both canoeing and Hiking would be access #4 (Rain Lake). From there you can go to Islet Lake or McCraney Lake. Either of these Lakes provides easy access to the Uplands Backpacking Trail. If you are real energetic you could do the northern loop of the Uplands trail starting and ending at Islet Lake by way of Pincer Lake, West Otterpaw, and Brown Lakes. It is roughly a 28 kilometer loop but if done in one long day the heaviest thing you would have to carry is Lunch. It could also be broken up into two days with an overnight at one of the backpacking campsites. If you want more canoeing challenge go into Islet by way of Sawyer, Jubilee, Moccasin, and Cranebill Lakes. Get both the Canoe Routes map and the Backpacking trails map to help you plan your ideal route. Note the Upland Trail has quite a bit of elevation change on some portions of the trail that will affect just how fast you walk. Have a great trip.
