Algonquin Video

There was a guy from England who took some professional quality video of a long trip with three buddies. The trailer he put together had Tom Waits for background music.

I've been trying to find a link for a while. Does anyone remember this and know where to find it? IIRC, they were planning on returning to Algonquin for more footage, but instead decided to go to Quetico and start over again.

Anyone?

Thanks

No link, but....

Hi Matt,

Last I heard, they could not secure the rights to use Tom Waits music. I don't know about elsewhere, but in Canada, trying to secure copyrights to audio music for video is called "Syncro rights" or synchronization rights. These are very hard to acquire. With "Mechanical Rights", it is easy and as a matter of law, no one can be refused to buy them, they are for audio only. But for Syncro rights, the artist has a right to say,"I don't want my music used for that, or put in a video", etc, etc. Thus the difficulty in securing the rights.

I don't know why they simply didn't buy a few tracks from a garageband artist. There are a ton of them on the web, a lot of the music is first rate, and the rights are cheap cheap cheap.

I have no link to offer, and if I recall, they were supposed to return in September of 2006, right around the same time Joan & I did a 22 day trip thru The PArk. It rained for 16 days on that trip, I suspect shooting didn't go well, either in APP or Quetico.

I think letting a specific audio track(s) hold up your entire production is a foolish decision, and hope they decided to look elsewhere, as from what I had seen of their work, it is something not to be missed, and would've loved to have purchased their finished product.

Matt,

I just want to re-iterate, that this is what I suspected transpired. I don't know for sure, only the folks that were doing the video can answer that. It might simply be, that they were able to secure the rights, but the cost might have been too high for them to afford buying them...many different issues I figure...here's hoping though...

Thanks, Anon, for that link, I've been trying for a few weeks to remember it. (If anyone else is interested, this will open it directly.) The soundtrack is Jockey Full of Bourbon, from Rain Dogs.

Anyway, I'd buy the DVD if he ever produced one. You're probably correct, Markus, the specific music rights would have been a stumbling block. Also the guy's paying work seems to keep him plenty busy, judging from his site!
