Oh my... Must of misread my books ..
I Thought Happy Isle had Specks like Merchant and Red rock!

Perhaps a rethought of May trip is in order !

Specks preferred... Lakers too easily caught

1. I understand Hogan is good for Specks and would mean a longish in Day1

Would allow a day trip to Philip ( specks again) Day 2

Pull back to Redrock ( longish Day again)

and then out last day (easy day )

Hmmmm..

2. Or longish day and make Big Trout Day one and fish Longer day 2
back to Merchant day three and then out

Hmmmm...

It is truly awful when somebody throws you a curves and says Lakers and Bass on the lake you planned to Base Camp

Decisions, Decisions

Oh my.. Guess we will decide at the gate when we buy interior permit

Salvelinus , that would be an easier epoch for 2008 :-)

Day 1 to Merchant ( setup base camp and test the lures)

Day 2 would be BT

Day 3 pull back to RedRock and fish RedRock and Nepawin
or just day trip from Merchant depending on weather

Day 4 easy out from Merchnat or Redrock

Perhaps the first trip of 2008 should be easy "Comme Ça" and then I'll try a 5-7 day later trip to loop through Hogan and return via BigT/Longer.
Perthaps even an excellent Sept option to end up at Happy Isle for
possible AA mini reunion in Sept..

Did I hear somebody/someone offer to resupply at HAppyIsle ?

Hmmm...

I might owe Salvelinus a beer when I see him next for making up our minds
and easing into the season

Probably will be lots of motor boats on Hogan in May until the long weekend.

Personally, what I would do in that area if you want specks, is base camp on Merchant with side trips to Big T and Longer one day, and Hemlock Lake (and maybe even LaMuir) the next day, then backtrack to Happy Isle/Red Rock, and then out.

Or camp on Merchant first night, then Lamuir second night (via Hemlock) (with trip to Red Pine Bay), and then back to Happy Isle/Red Rock via Longer/Big TRout, fishing all the way. Nice loop here and great speck fishing!!!!!

....and seeing that you are going to ask, YES, there are specks in Hemlock. I don't know about Blowdown or Deer Yard.

Specs in Hemlock? Yippee! We're planning on fishing our way back from Burntroot through La Muir, Deer Yard, Hemlock and Blowdown and hitting each one for 1/2 hour or 45 minutes of spec hunting! Well, a little more time on La Muir...maybe an hour's troll, weather permitting.

Hi Raccoon I would love to take you up that Beer but I don't think I will be getting up to the Park till later in the year.

Let me know your plans for September.

Your plans sound like fun but lot's of ports. The portage from Merchant to Hemlock is pretty swampy and there are a lot of busted up old log walkways so watch your step. If you go the rest of the way to La Muir through Deeryard and Blowdown you will get to see the new logging road. Wow what a monster.

I remember we hit Merchant for our Annual Mother's day trip in 1995 or 1996. The ice had just started to come out of Ope and HI.

When we got to Merchant the whole upper half of the lake was still full of ice. The weather was very windy and cold. Our site was minimal at best. Tough trip.

Cheers and get a picture of that logging road for me.
