yeah I do in fact have that one, (how could i forget?)as I re-read a story in it last month, about a fellow who witnessed over the course of several hours wolves attacking a deer, on Opengo rd. Great read, plus the other stories in there.

Ok, does it have the reprints of the newsletters that discussed the wolf attacks at the Lake of Two Rivers campground?
I can't find my copies of those Raven newsletters, but I know I've got them. They must be in the same place as my copy of the Names of Algonquin booklet.

Hi Barbara,
I'll have to check, but won't have an answer for you till about 7pm...I am at work.
I suspect someone can answer it for you sooner than that though.

no one else has the book?
I can't find it Barbara, I did find a mess of old Ravens and thumbed thru them quickly...didn't see anything that caught my eye.
No that I think about it, last year's supply was emailed to me in PDF format...no paper..I"ll see if I can find them too. The story I was talking about was in fact in another book, "The Raven Talks about Deer & Moose". Very simliar to the one you have, but I'm sure I have the wolf one here somewhere as well. Do you remember what year or decade it was?

Uh, the Ravens might be old. I saw them used a reference, and the year quoted was 1997. But that seems too long ago...I'm not sure I have collections from that long ago, and I know I read the story, it was in 2 consecutive issues.
How do you get them emailed in a pdf? I'm old-fashioned, and prefer to read "real" books, etc, so I'm just curious.
Anywhoo....thanks for checking it out and getting back to me...right on time, too!
Who knows....maybe a road trip up to the Park may be in order for the weekend....West Gate might have a copy of the book.

In a word, yes.
I didn't check your references because of my slow dial-up connection. However, the book contains The Best Wolf is a Wild Wolf, parts 1 and 2 from August 1997.

Wolf Articles in Raven
April 16 2008, 9:13 PM
Barbara;
1999 No.s 4,5 & 6 have a series of articles called "A Wolfian Trilogy". No. 4 mentions No.s 9 & 10 of 1997 about an incident in 1996.
I have the 1999 Ravens if you would like an OCR copy.
Somewhere in my archives I have several newspaper articles about these attacks but I can't locate them at the moment

Whoo hoo! Yes, that's them. Thanks, Bob.
I can't believe they are from so long ago. Seems like just a few years. (That's a sign of aging, isn't it? )

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I've got complete sets of the Raven for a lot of the years, I just have to find them.
I was really interested to find out if they had been included in the book, primarily. I was surprised to read of the encounters in the Raven, to be honest.
Now that I know they are, I'll make sure to pick up a copy of the book.
Wow, newspaper clippings....how do copyright laws work, I wonder, for old clippings? Would be neat if you could post them.
Thanks for the help, folks. Appreciate it.

I goofed

My apologies; I got it wrong.
The two articles I mentioned above pertained to the "attack" on Tom Thomson Lake in 1996.
The "attack" at Lake of Two Rivers occurred in September 1998 and is discussed in A Wolfian Trilogy, Part 1: The Bite That Shook Our Faith and in A Wolfian Trilogy, Part 2: Thinking Things Throught, both of which appeared in The Raven in 1999 July and are also reproduced in the book.
I'm embarrassed; I answered too quickly. I skimmed through the material and confused the two incidents. Sorry about that.

No problem. I was pretty sure "Wolfian Trilogy" was the first part, too. Sure sounded familiar.
That pdf I linked to is pretty hefty. Sorry about that. The link to the page where it can be found has a the pdf broken into parts...don't know if they would be less taxing on the ole dial-up.
The whole "Algonquin wolf" issue is of interest to me. The Park's website leaves the issue at 2000, and doesn't sound very convincing that the Eastern Red Wolf is a distinct species. Yet, the legislation went through for protection, not only in the Park boundaries, but the surrounding townships.
Thanks again. (I'm going to get the book....geez, I didn't realize it's only $2.95!)
You are wise. Stick to paper, not pdf's!
Must've burned them(to Disc), now i can't find it.
Last year, FOAP(Friends of Algonquin Park) emailed me the years' worth of Ravens in PDF.
I remember there being something to the effect of checking some box in the email and replying if I wanted paper copies mailed to me. They also thanked me for helping to conserve paper or save trees or some such thing. I had intended to print them off at work, and just never got around to it...all that map stitching stuff ya know? heh heh

Barbara,
Thanks for the great read. I love reading case reports, on animal encounters and animal behaviour.
I noted that the PDF is from 2002, and needs to be updated.
I mention this, as it does not cover the first documented killing of a human by wolves, back in North Saskatchewan in 2005.
As a matter of fact the author of the case history pdf(Mark McNay), testified at the corners inquest into the death of Kenton Carnegie in Saskatoon, in 2007.

Great....I can't find my paper copies, and you can't find your disc. Geez.
How many trees get saved, if you do printouts in the end anyway? LOL
Seeing that the Ravens I was wondering about were from 1999, then that would be around the time I started collecting them, more or less. Always made a point of taking a tour, stopping at the West Gate, and dropping a few shekels in the box for the set of 12.
Yup, I was hoping that there would be an updated version of the study, or at least the documentation added on as a separate pdf, of the "encounters" from 2000 to 2006 or 2007. Haven't seen anything.
I didn't know that the author had testified. Guess I've got some more searching to do. I remember reading bits and pieces of the story, but it's kind of hazy. (another sign of aging)
