Hi Dan,

You certainly do need one, if you are on Hwy#60, within The Park boundary. If not, you could be ticketed.
I know with the price of gas tacked onto a daily vehicle permit, it can get expensive.
Your dollars though, help keep The Park functioning.
Cheers

If you're going to do the day-trails, you'll need a day-use permit. You can get one at either the West Gate or the East Gate.

And, of course, you won't really be parking on the shoulder anywhere along Highway 60. There are parking areas for each of the trails. If you remember to pick up the Park's newsletter when you get your permit, this map is on the back page:

Leave an extra pair of socks and shoes in the vehicle....might be nice to change out of muddy, wet footwear for the drive home.

Take more water than you think you need.

And don't forget your camera...hint, hint.

Hi Dan,

I speak from second-hand experience. My sister who never goes to The Park, drove through it a few years back.
It was in early fall, just when there are some colours starting to show. Spying a hiking trail, She pulled over and spent the next hour or so, being amazed by both the surrounding beauty and the silence. Anyhoo, she didn't know any better/read the notice at the trailhead, requiring a permit..and lo and behold...there was a ticket on her windscreen when she returned.

For a daily vehicle permit, I think it is $13.85

hope the sun shines for ya, have a great one

The access point for those lakes is Access #17. All access points for backcountry camping are shown on the Canoe Routes Map. (Driving directions are also given for each access point.)

You drive to Madawaska, then turn onto Major Lake Road. Follow it to the access point office on Farm Lake.

You can get a rough idea of the locations of the access points by clicking on "trip logs" on the AA homepage. In fact, if you check out Barry's trip log (17.9) Barry Bridgeford's 2000 Booth Lake Trip it includes a map.

So the permit office is right at the Access Point?

Thanks for the info!

Yup, the permit office is right there at Access #17, the same can be said for access#'s; 1, 5, 9, 11, 17, 18, 19(not sure), and 29.
