Over the last two years I've taken the time to make my own map of Algonquin Park and the surrounding area. As the title states, this map is being distributed for _no charge_, though I do appreciate advice, suggestions for improvement, and information to enhance the map. For a list of the map features take a look at the linked website below or at the legend: http://tinyurl.com/62qep7 (1MB jpg image.) Distribution, editing and sharing of this resource is encouraged with the only restrictions being listed under the "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Canada" license ( http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ca/ ).
Been using your map now for a few weeks, and have since retired my "official canoe routes map." Not only does yours have more detail, and information, but its also a wonderful work of art. It is also way more updated then the digital canoe routes map (1995 version I think) that is floating around the net.
Thanks for sharring, what was obviously a labour of love!
Great job Jeff. Thanks for all the hard work. Love the DEM inclusion.
Cheers

Some feedback
May 5 2008, 3:21 PM
Pretty cool work, Jeff! What were your main resources for information?
Not sure how it will run on my computer at home, but it seems that all of the layers might make it impractical to run as an electronic planning aid =/. It took a minute or so to load a section at 100%. You really did well when it comes to packing information in there without a cluttered appearance. Awesome!

Re: Some feedback
May 5 2008, 3:28 PM
Hi Bryce,
My resources are.. everything I could get my hands on. In terms of the old portages (for example) I used maps from.. 1906, 1922, 1947, 1958, and a bunch of newer maps (Factual information is not copyrightable under the Copyright Act).
Lots of current sites/portages are based on on the ground surveys and reports...
In terms of the map speed, what version are you using? If you're using the PDF that's the reason why I created the jpg images. Try the 500dpi (Large) or 300dpi (Medium) images. If you still have issues with speed make sure to respond back or email me and I can see what I can do for you .

yup, was using the pdf
May 5 2008, 4:12 PM
I'll give the jpg a go at some point.
so you did all of the terrain, regions, etc. by hand? my guess is you used a Mac, but how easy (or difficult) does commercial software make this sort of task?
i think it's been done by now, but i've had this idea of using the Google Maps API and creating an account-based map system for Algonquin where a user (or users) can log in and create markers for various documenting purposes: fishing spots, pictures, reminders, links to trip logs, etc. Your map might be a good basis for the layers required for such a project, though admittedly my idea never got much beyond the dreaming stage and less on the factual techie details. I find that between here and myccr, much of the useful information like triplogs and pictures get lost in buried (archived) posts. It would be nice to put it all in one spot, perhaps with some sort of control mechanism for what markers should show up on the map at any one time so as to avoid overcrowding.

Very nice map Jeffrey!!
I rarely use a map these days though because all the information is stored in my little head and I know the Park pretty good, where the portages, campsites, etc. are.
However, I always bring a map along in case of memory failure or too many of whatever!!!!
What is the best application to open the map. I have a Dell with Windows XP OS.
Love the details but it seems to be real slow when I open it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager

Hi Jeffrey,
Your map is a thing of beauty and I will be spending hours and hours with it over the years I'm sure.
I really hope that now that it's out there others will continue to refine and expand it in the spirit that has inspired you to do the work you've done already. What a great resource.
Congratulations!

Hey Jeff, I'm just wondering why when I open the pdf it comes up failed to open. Can you give me a little help on what to do?
Forget the PDF. Even if you have a quad Duo Core 4(don't exist yet), with 16GB of RAM, the pdf will still open slowly.
Download the high res JPEG Jeffrey has provided. In Mac OS X, using just the "Preview" application, the file opens up quickly and pans/zooms very nicely. No photoshop needed. I'm sure there is an application similar in XP, as windows has 100x more apps than Mac does.(like I need 500 different versions of a spreadsheet program).
Cheers
Another trick is to open the pdf file with any adobe software (Acrobat Pro if possible) and wait the minute or so for it to load. Once it appears, flatten the image, and work from their. Once simplified to a single layer, you can't really edit the file, but it works 100 times faster. Alternatively, for fast printing of the file, crop out the portions that you don't need at that time, and zoom into to area you are interested in. Once cropped, the file works really fast, and prints with amazing quality. I've "booked" the map into 12 sections, and was able to print it out with amazing detail very fast that way. The trick is to NOT save the changes as you go along, that way the whole map is preserved in its original (and fantastic) format, ready for the next time you need it.
Another trick, if you go Jeff's route, is to make a copy of the file and work from that, then locking the original file, so it never gets overwritten.

Re: New Digital Algonquin Map (Free)
May 6 2008, 1:21 AM
Bryce: Yea, I had the same problem as you with the PDF. My solution is the jpg. The PDF is intended only for high quality printing.
I did indeed use a Mac... I used Adobe Illustrator to create the file. The terrain and lake shapes were NOT done by hand, rather they were sourced from another resource (They are facts and not protected by the Copyright Act.)
This actually started as a resource for something like what you're talking about (A desktop trip planning and trip information database,) but has grown well beyond that and in a very different direction.
I have read many triplogs because I've had the same problem as you.. I read about all sorts of neat things in triplogs and end up forgetting about them when I'm on my trip. I think you have a good idea, but it would take a good amount of work to implement (Maybe when I get all of the features added to the map that I want to have added?) If there are specific layers you'd like me to add to my map feel free to suggest them and I'll see what I can do... For what it's worth the PDF in Adobe Acrobat allows you to turn layers on and off... but of course it's SLOW :\. Oh well...
Bo: My, what an honour! If you can get some use out of it with all of your years of experience my work will be done... Did you manage to get a copy yet? If not I'll still bring you a CD of the map when I see you @ WP.
MattJ: I'm glad you like it . Remember, look out for any mistakes you can find and I'll ensure that they'll be corrected in the next version. Also, if yu have any features you want, make sure to email me and I'll see what I can do.
Paddlin: Try the jpg... sadly the PDF is wayyyyy to slow. Try the application I mentioned to Sal if you still have speed problems.
Jeff: I still have to try your suggestion.. it sounds of interest
****Thanks for all of your kind comments. I appreciate you taking the time to look at my map... that's certainly what made it for ****
If you use this in place of the Friends of Algonquin Map I'm sure they'd appreciate a donation. I know they rely on map sales for a good chunk of their revenue.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure we get to have websites any more. Used to be one website (small, but could upload photos to it) per email address. We've got 7 email addresses....I think. I was going to resort to hosting the files on a free hosting site, but it'd have added an extra step to actually download the maps and is filled with advertising... Thanks to Markus it looks like that might not be the case. Thanks Markus!
Jeff P: Oooo I have webspace with Rogers? The only problem I'm forseeing is quickly surpassing their bandwidth limits (I got 30GB of downloads yesterday.)
Markus: Emailed you. Thanks for the bandwidth offer dude!
WOW, what a great job you have done. It's about time that an AP map was updated to a modern look.
Just a couple of things I noticed on your map, there seems to be a couple of old campsites that you have marked on Opeongo Lake that seems to be in the middle of the lake.
Although you certainly have taken a lot of time and effort to produce this map, there might be to much info. Two examples that I quickly came across was the cottage for sale at 1.5 Mil and the other is the old aboriginal settlement and burial site. I am not to concerned with the cottage but I would hate to see the yahoo's tramping though the bush looking for and/or digging in or near the burial grounds for any artifacts that may or may not be there.
Please don't take my comments hard, I am just trying to help you make the best map ever into the best map ever.
The cottage is a nice buy especially if it's on a canoe route but I have my eye on a lodge on a private lake and all they want for it is 6 mil.
Prayers to the lottery gods have only gotten me a few free tickets, I think they must have selective hearing loss at times, like when I pray to them.
Yes, it was a very nice touch, it does give you an idea what you will have in that area of your trip.

Re: New Digital Algonquin Map (Free)

JDL: I'm glad you like it. In terms of the sites.. many are on islands smaller than the symbol that represents them. That's the reality of using a scale of 1:125000 like I do (That way if you print the whole thing it's not too big).
In terms of too much info... the cottage thing was something that peaked my interest; if you didn't take a careful look you might not realize that such a 'remote' canoe route has a big 1.5 million dollar cottage in the middle of it. A notation like the one I gave was one way to point it out and give information on something that I considered unique. In general I make notations on various cultural facts of interest.. in this case I choose a current feature to be of cultural interest. That being said, if you don't think it's of enough importance I can consider removing it. What do you think?
The burial site.. Over the course of the creation of the map I've had to decide what to include and what not to include. For example the presence of logging road locations may encourage or enable illegal access to the park.. old campsite locations may encourage people to use them illegally. My general rule is that if the information is available in a publicly available book, map, etc. it will be included. I know there are a bunch of official archaeological sites which are not usually listed. I have avoided showing them because their locations are only semi-public. In the end I figure that if it's available in a public resource I'm not enabling anyone to find the site who wouldn't be able to learn about otherwise.. end the end I have to hope that my fellow canoeists have enough integrity to act appropriately. I certainly do appreciate your concerns... What do you think about my method of decision making?
Elevation lines... something I've thought about and that I'm considering for addition (They'd be very faint so as to not take away from anything else.. they would help with perspective on the size of hills though). If they don't look very good I can always pull them before releasing the next revision.
Markus: Thanks!
All the Best,
Jeff

Re: New Digital Algonquin Map (Free)
May 8 2008, 1:12 AM
Steve: One of the basic reasons I made the map was that the park was not correcting errors I reported multiple times over multiple years (ie the wrong number of bays on West Harry L.) Am I making this to screw over the FoA? No way! I think they are a very important organization. People will still buy FoA maps because it's nice to have a paper map and it's important at the same time (Remember, if you print out a part of my map with an inkjet printer and you get it wet, you're screwed). Also, on my page I wrote a recommendation that encourages donations to the FoA. If you donate $5 to the FoA and use map map + last years FoA map they will be making more money than otherwise (No printing costs.) Will everyone do this? No. Do I think it'd be great if they did? Yes. I certainly don't want to harm their revenue stream, but do I think it's important to make an accurate freely transferable map with sets of data they'd never include? Yes. If the FoA approached me I'd love to help them correct all of the errors in their map... How is this map helping the park? By having an accurate map they won't be getting complaints from people who are forced to turn around and cut their trip short because key portages are in the wrong spot (Some are wayyyy off.) I'm pretty sure you're not saying that I'm trying to hurt the park, but why would I try to hurt the organization that keeps most of the park's programs alive? Without them the Drummer shelter that I care about so much would probably have collapsed by now. Is it the price that is your concern or is it the fact that another (better map imho) is available? Chrismar makes an excellent series of maps and they are even sold in the visitor's centre run by the FoA!
Zeb:That is one of the things that I think is unique about this project. I expect fewer than 1% of the people who download the map want to try the AI file, but if they want to, that's great! This also allows you to create a map covering a totally different area but with these stylistic elements. Why does this matter? Because the only thing besides specific text that is copyrighted on maps is the style. By having a freely available style one can create a map with a unique set of data or transfer data from a copyrighted map for public display with no copyright issues.
All the best,
Jeff

Hi Happy Camper.
Try 43.876" wide by 37.5" tall if you want to match the printed scale of 1:125 000. I'd suggest using the 500dpi jpg to print (The PDF takes wayyyyy too long). Although 300dpi is good enough for printing, I suggest using the 500dpi image because you're scaling it up for printing and of you only use the 300dpi image you'll have less than 300 dpi after doing the scaling. For what it's worth I also have a 600dpi jpg if you want it though the 500 should certainly be enough. Feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

Bryce: I really appreciate your comments. This is the first time I've ever made a map and everything I learned was based off trial and error (Which wasn't very fun some times because I'd have to redo things that took hours because I found a better way to do things/a way to make things look better.) My guiding philosophy was that I never wanted to take the easy way out to save time. I knew that the only way for a map to be valuable is for to to be right (To the best of my abilities.)

what application are you using to open the Map with?
I'm a PC guy who like the Mac commercial so much I bought it. as a result I have had a few problems adjusting to the Mac format (old fart doesn't get it)
Have you had any success yet opening the map on your mac?
As mentioned by Jeffrey, the "Preview" application that is included with Mac OS X, works well when opening and scrolling/zooming thru either the low or hi-res JPEG versions of the map.
It has been long since I posted, but I downloaded immediately after reading the first message (long before I saw the mirror site info). Can posts be edited (see that's how often I post -- I'm just a lurker here)? If so, I'd suggest adding/swapping Markus's link in the first post for us folks who don't look before we leap.
I had a thought as soon as I saw the info on the size... what about ordering it printed online on a weather resistant type paper? I did a web search and came up with this company:
Does anyone have experience with similar services? I unfortunately don't think I'll be able to make it up to Algonquin this year (I'm just outside of Boston), but next time I go I'd love to have this map along with my trusty old FoA map.
Thanks for any thoughts,

Chris, ask Sean (of Ajax) when he returns. I'm helping someone else from AA get a few copies and Sean's agreed to get me a quote from where he works.
Robert, any problems still?
JVFS: Sorry about that, originally I had all the files hosted myself but then I ran our of my bi-monthly bandwidth limit (50GB) and was leaving for the park for a month. I might be able to start hosting the AI file and the PDF myself since they should get fewer downloads. Remember though, the PDF is slooow. I warned you .
I'd be very interested in getting a high quality printed copy of this map. If someone in Durham is already having this done... maybe I can get in on that before I spend the time figuring it out myself.
I'm in the process of having the printer for my business do up a few for me and I live in Durham region. I will let you know how they turn out and you are welcome to a copy.
I'm in Oshawa and would be willing to reimburse you for a decent printout. I was gonna go to a printer company and have it done. Not sure what my cheapest avenue would be. Anyways, let me know.
If that falls through, I'll let you guys know if I find a cheap and quality alternative.
Nice. I had asked around this afternoon at work, and a few good printshops were recommended. But since you've already done (or will do) the legwork... I'll be happy to leach on

I don't know when you're aiming to have it done, but I'm hoping to have version 1.1 done soon. It mostly contains corrections, but I just figured I'd point that out in case the wait is acceptable (It'll be done near the beginning of july I hope,) so that you don't pay to have it printed only to be surprised with a corrected version. (A complete list of what's to be expected in the next version is on the site under 'More about the map'.
Oh and before I forget, I think Bruce Sutton would be interested in buying 4 copies as well if you're willing to produce enough copies (I can connect you to him via email.)

Re: Some feedback
June 19 2008, 10:42 AM
What I did was use the Vliv application to open it after I'd downloaded the map, and then use the "copy current view to clipboard" function in the drop down menu.
Then you can open Adobe Acrobat (assuming you have the version where you can create .pdf files and not only read them), and you can click the "create .pdf" button and select "create from image on clipboard".
If you don't have Adobe, you can try doing this in Word.
This way you can just cut out the chunk of the map you'll be using for that trip, so you only have to deal with the giant map once, and you can use the most detailed scale so you don't miss anything.
I'm in no rush and will be happy to wait for the updated version. Thanks for letting me know.
As for printing it for others, I would have no problem getting that done, but I will wait to see my printers first run at it before I make the official offer public. I'm considering having my guy produce a folded paper map version and a laminated version. Once I'm happy with it I will post the offer here in a new thread. Stay tuned..
Well, to maintain the scale of 1:125 000 you need to print it at 43.876 " by 37.5". It might be easier to print it at 36" by the respective length dictated by ratio since I think 36" is the width that some wide format printers print.
Hey c'mon, stop hogging Jeffrey already, I need Jeffrey to hurry up and finish that triplog!

Re: Thanks Jeffery
June 19 2008, 1:33 PM
Standards? Who needs those :p.
Version 2 (For 09) should be closer to that size - I'll expand the width to encompass the entire Big East R to the west, to cover the Barron R route to Black Bay on the East and then I'll shrink the height a bit to ~ 1km outside of the park boundary on the north and south.
For those of us either on slower services, or those of us who's computers almost choke on the full size file, here are sub-map files on my server. They are compressed at 25%, so they aren't as sharp as the original file. Click on an individual link to download an individual map. It will load into your web-browser and you can save it from there.
This is something I've needed to do since as you have commented.. it's very slow to load. What compression settings did you use? I'm quite impressed with the quality for the file sizes.
Do you mind if I link to your submaps from my site? I get about 100 unique hits per day, so that can help you guess bandwidth usage.
I think you have done a remarkable job of creating this map. I plan on using this map with other maps on an upcoming trip. I find two maps are better than one due to errors that are common on wilderness maps.
I believe I have found one error. The map scale seems to be off. My best estimates are that 2 miles on this digital map would in reality be 1 mile. Can anyone else verify this?
I plan on printing this with the National Geographic adventure paper. This paper can be used in any inkjet with standard ink. It is advertised as: Waterproof, Tear-resistant, abrasion-tough, & folds easily. Has anyone tried this paper? http://www.natgeomaps.com/adventure_paper.html
It is available in 3 sizes: Letter (8.5” x 11”) Legal (8.5” x 14”) Tabloid (11” x 17”)
Thanks, Jeff, for your efforts putting this all together. I look forward to the next revision, and I'm sure this map will help make my upcoming trip better.
Yea, someone recently emailed me to point that out. Gah! That's a big error!
It's now fixed and I'm in the process of uploading the new revision of the map I've been working on for the last month since it's now complete . Hopefully it'll be up tomorrow.
Thanks for the correction - I'd really feel like an idiot if I had shipped a second version with this error still included.

Thank you, thank you, thank you from one who can only get dial-up internet!
I've downloaded the revised map V1.1. It definitely loads a lot quicker. Thanks for keeping this map so up to date and making improvements where needed!
I have printed sections of the map using the National Geographic adventure Paper. This paper has a nice durable feel to it. The prints I have made look very nice. I used the large map and expanded by 4 times to give me a nice scale similar to a topo quad map. I made my maps to fit on 8 1/2" X 14" legal sized paper. The detail is still very nice even though it is blown up 4X. I also made the lakes all blue on my maps, because I like how the blue stands out, and I don't fish.
You can check out my mini Quads by following the links below (they are about 2.5Mb each and print on legal sized paper 8 1/2" x 14"):
Now, I cant wait until my trip starts on August 17. (Opeongo-Happy Isle-Merchants-Trout Lakes-McIntosh-Misty-Petawawa River-Trout Lakes-Burntroot-Big Trout-Merchants-Happy Isle-Opeongo-Home!)
I'll have my GPS with me on the trip, and I will gladly relay any errors/info I find during my trip.

Re: Printing the Maps

Feedback on National Geographic Adventure Paper. I used the 8 1/2" X 14" Legal size.
I did a wet test with the paper. The paper only smeared slightly when I wiped it dry. If the paper were allowed to air dry, then it will not smear. The black ink was the only ink that smeared. The smearing is noticeable on the compass rose and the legend. The red ink did bleed through the other side, and is noticeable in the top picture's top map with portage markings from the back side bleeding through. (This will not affect single side prints, and I printed both sides). The map is still usable, but harder to read. I am using an HP Printer with HP Ink Jet cartridges. I have attached 2 photos of the printed maps. The top map in each photo is the map that got wet, and the bottom map is a new print of the same maps. I can't complain about the quality of the maps for the convenience of home printing, and the cost is not too expensive either. The paper is thick enough to print on both sides without ink bleed (unless they get water soaked). I would recommend using a waterproof map case when using these maps. I use map cases even with the commercial waterproof maps, because the keep the maps in better condition.
