It will depend on the weather. But the bugs are usually thick by the end of May.

Thick indeed

May 25 2008, 9:14 AM

The Black Flies have figured out their god given talents. Swarms of them and starting to bite too! I've been trying to get some friends to due an early May trip all year. Finally they settled on next weekend. They will soon understand why I said early May.

We're just back from 3 days on the East side of park. Luckily we were on a windy site! Early mornings and evenings when it cools down, they disappear. During the main part of the day they are out in force and starting to bite. A bit more warm weather and they'll be biting in full force as well.
On a good note, there are lots of baby dragonflies around too!

It was a spectacular night for stargazing last night!

If they are even close to what they are in my backyard, bring lots and lots and lots of bug repellent and a bug tent!

Bugs

May 26 2008, 9:41 PM

Hey Dan

Just got back from the park yesterday, and they were out. The weather in the day was warm but breezy, and the evenings cool, so they weren't biting that bad. When we left though, the wind was gone, and boy did I wish I had a bug shirt/hood while I was packing the canoe on the roof. It was only 30 minutes of packing, but it seemed like an eternity, and I have a few bites to prove it.

I can only imagine them getting worse over the next 3 weeks or so, not that it will stop me fro returning by then.

We were in at AP#17 on the weekend and they were out but not biting. Only my daughter had any bites. If the weather stays cool, it's 3 Celsius here right now, you might get lucky again this weekend. Or it might warm up just in time to release the swarms!

Well I made it back alive.... anyway the bugs were very bad during the day just like we expected. I'm not sure if the fish are full from eating all the bugs but we only caught 2 Lakers (Pen Lake) we did do a little trip into Gem lake and I guess I should have looked at the stocking list before I went because the only thing bitting in there were 2inch specks but tons of them . Don't get me wrong I still had a great time as always.

Yeah, the bugs were nuts at times. Cold nights though, so sundown there was nothing. We had a decent breeze most of the time.

Getting bitten by bugs is the worst alarm clock ever! That's no way to wake up.

Heading in on Friday AM, Assuming the worst for bugs, however the back-up plan
