Hi
I've been "lurking" a bit, and love this site, and forums! Algonquin is my absolute favourite place!

I will be doing a quick trip to Hambone Lake next weekend. Just wondering if anyone has stayed on this lake, and could recommend a site? I know it's not too far in, but we just wanted a quick trip, close to our cottage without much portaging.

Any info would be appreciated!

Hi soozi-q

I just took my kids to Hambone a few weeks ago and really loved the area. I posted a trip log at:

that has some photos and information about the area.

Hope it helps

We've been to Hambone many times for weekend trips and the site directly out from the portage is a great site. We heard lots of Owls there a few weeks ago. Great weekend lake.

Thanks to both for your info on Hambone! Jeff, I enjoyed reading your triplog, and pictures! Unfortunately, I've had to change my reservations for this weekend, due to a sudden medical concern, one which we were advised by our doctor, not to venture into the interior. We have booked now for August 1, and Hambone was booked for that weekend. We will now be on McCraney Lake. Again, haven't been there, although we have gone through access point 4, Rain Lake before.

I can't wait, as this will be our first trip on the season. But doctor's orders...better to wait, in case something happens out there!

Thanks again!

Soosie Q,

Just remember to check the water levels on the McCraney route because apparently it can be low at the times depending on what they do with the dam. I have mulled over about going there in September but I'm going to phone that access point first before booking and also asking them whether you can use the road (old logging road) to hike in to this lake. If you go in there, could you post a brief report on your trip - Much appreciated if you do!

Happy Paddling!

Harry
