Just came out yesterday

June 25 2008, 2:55 PM

Pretty bad since there has been so much rain.
Blackflies are out after it rains, mosquitos morning and evenings. Dearflies in the heat of the day.
If it cools down after dark they are all gone so you can enjoy a campfire.

Try to grab a windy site if you can!

thanks guys, (cool link Jeff) spoke to a guy in the haliburton highlands who said they weren't too bad last weekend, however algonquin probably a different story. I guess we should bring our deet and a bug tent next weekend eh?

All I know is that I got chewed by black flies last Sunday on a fishing day trip to Algonquin

Jeff's cool link (Yikes)

June 25 2008, 7:55 PM

Yikes is what I say

Racoons don't like Black Flies... Interferes with eating and drinking
as those nasty buggers taste horrible and they BITE/Chew
and
I know my Dog would not appreciate it..
And it looks like they even drove Swede away from Cedar?

Yikes says it all about my reaction to
the Jeffs cool link "bug forecast" shown below:
(especially since Thurs/Friday were days of tripping)

Racoon thinks he'll pass this time but
he will still go canoe paddling/trout fishing (albeit in Quebec)

Here's looking fwd to Aug trip from AccessPoint #15

You'll note that the weather is going to get definitely cooler in the next
5 days or so. Highs of only in the teens.

I am sincerely hoping that by the July 4th weekend things will have dried up somewhat... In past years I have gone into the park mid-to-late June without so much as a nibble from any bugs, and that is precisely why (2 months ago) I chose NEXT weekend to introduce the parents to Algonquin's interior. I would hate for their first canoe trip to be a smorgasbord for the winged pests. =\

Bugs, bugs and bugs

June 26 2008, 12:02 PM

The bugs are fierce this year that is for sure. It is bites on bites at this point. The huge amount of snow this past winter coupled with a wet spring has made for good bug breeding. It is so wet out there that when we get a night of heavy rain the Oxtongue River rises quite noticably. All "sponges" are full I guess. On the good side though a friend caught a nice laker a few weeks ago. Being a bunch of curious naturalists we always open the intestines to see who is eating who. Inside this trout we found a perch and some mosie larvae. This food chain is a circle I guess.

Cheers,
Ben from The Wolf Den
