I was supposed to go into Quebec for an 8 day river trip, but due to high water, trip was cancelled. I am know going to take 2 of my kids into Algonquin(14 and 12 year old) for 4 or 5 days. My plan is to leave sunday or monday and head into the park. I do not have any reservations of any kind but i figure we would head in when others would be coming out. So what I need is any possible ideas for a trip along #60 which will get us away from the crowds right away, something with a loong portage at the start of the trip. Aniy thoughts or comments would be much appreciated!!

Jim, I have using the south end of the park for years, Smoke down to the Bonnechere area and that should get you away from the crowds, Smoke has lakers and bass, ragged has lakers and bass, Big Porcupine has lakers and specks and Bonnechere has Lakers. There is a pretty steep portage between ragged and Porcupine, basically 600m straight uphill that keeps a lot of people on the ragged side. We do this trip in the spring in about 4 1/2 hours. If you decide to go there is a great campsite on Bonnechere just before the portage into Little Lemon lake and there is also a great campsite between Bonnechere and Cradle. Cradle is a small lake that holds lakers and you should be able to get into them, the lake is 100' deep in the middle. Have fun and hope your children enjoy it. This is the age that I started bringing my son in for our Spring fishing trips and we have been back every year for the past 17 years and counting.

Two great ideas

Jim

Pinetree #1 with sides to Fraser and Sylvia
Heron Rookery on Sylvia is worth the trip

Louisa# 2 with side to North Grace and/or Rod&gun/Lawrence
and of course a longer dat trip to/from Harry/Rence via Florence/Frank would likely guarantee Trout for Supper

Have fun and may the crowds be left behind

I would agree with "Raton Laveur", Pinetree Lake has an easy portage to it and is a beautiful lake to explore with it's many bays, islands and points. Using other portages, day trips are another option.
