Hi All,

I have seen some cottages inside the park i.e. canoe lake, and was wondering if the land they are on is leased or owned?

If they were owned how much would the average cottage go for?

The cottages in Algonquin Park are on land leased from the Province of Ontario. The current lease is set to expire in 2017 and the Province has no plans on renewal/extension. We, with cottages inside Rondeau Park, are in the same 'sinking' boat. Although I can't speak for the Algonquin cottagers' association, we at Rondeau are actively lobbying for a lease extension. By the way, Algonquin and Rondeau are the two oldest provincial parks in Ontario (one year apart), and both have had cottages (leases solicited by the Province) as a part of their history since inception.

The cottages are leased. What the details are, I have no idea. I do know that they have been bought and sold. What price? Who knows. I'm not sure if it's the land that is leased, and when the leases expire, the buildings will need to "be removed", as has happened in other areas.

Yes, they've been fighting the lease termination for years. I do believe that the deadline has been extended in the past.

There is a cottage for sale on Galeairy Lake right now.

Actually, now that I try to track down the ad, I can't find it. It was running for <$300K though.

Are the cottagers really worried? Sure it's nicer to have a guarantee than not, but every time the leases come up they have been extended. The parks need the money.

Just as an example of how not worried I think the cottagers are, with this looming date there are plenty of building improvements and complete re-building at several cottages. Why put $30K into a cottage with a 10 year sunset date?

renewals

These cottages are almost certain to receive renewals on their leases.

For one, the leases generate a tremendous amount of revenue for the park.
For two, if the park wanted to cancel the cottage leases they would have to cancel the leases on all of the camps(tamakwa, tanamakoon, pathfinder etc... as well as the hotels Arowhon, bartlett etc. as the only reason to not renew is to state you are returning to a more natural state in the park, hard to argue on one hand that you want to return the park to a more natural state and then allow both logging operations and summer camps/lodges.

I for one am not against the cottagers, so long as they maintain the cottages in a fashion that is in keeping with the park (unobtrusive).

I doubt businesses are on the same agreement as cottages. Are they on the same deal?

Same Deal

July 2 2008, 12:13 PM

All businesses/camps/lodges are under the exact same arrangement. renewable leases. The Portage store/opeongo store/two rivers store are all 10 year leases.

As I said it would be incredibly difficult to justify removing the cottagers in the name of returning the park to a natural state and then allowing all the businesses to remain. They are both here to stay.

The portage store and the opeongo store buildings (Not sure about two rivers,) are not owned by the companies that use them, they are owned by the Government of Ontario and leased to the highest bidder. This of course is different than the cottages where the cottagers own the buildings and lease the land.

Camps were renewed for 40(?) years back in 2006(?).
