Sorry your trip was cut short

July 2 2008, 7:41 PM

Hey Canoeguy;

Great trip log. Even though the trip was cut short, it looked like a good time was had. I hope Kevin's tooth is all better now! I ended up meeting Markus and Sean on Friday, rather then Thursday, as the permit office for Cedar Lake had closed by the time I got in Thursday. As such, I literally missed Jim by but a few minutes.

Hopefully our paths will cross some other time in the summer.

Hi Darren,

A nice bit of reading there sir!
Your webpages load very quickly now, you've found a very good balance between quality and quantity, well done!
I was sorry to see you both leave to soon, but am gratified to know that Kevin's tooth was a serious matter after all, and that it has since been rectified. Dental pain is some of the worst pain there is, A wise decision Darren

Thanks Barry, ya know, half the problem has been that I fish barb-less, so already being a novice at fishing, fishing barb-less has made it more difficult to land the fish. It certainly turns up the challenge(and reward) a notch or two.

Great write up...

July 2 2008, 10:19 PM

Sadly I decided to have back out last minute
but it looks like you guys had a great trip

Too bad you had no time to check out Loxley (1180 North/West from AuraLee)
Markus likely would have caught some SPECKS !

As for Carl Wilson
I presume the creek heading to Glacier became to shallow/narrow to continue?

I Still plan to do Carl Wilson some day in the next two years so I am looking fwd
to chatting with you all about the trip log details and campsites enroute

Any idea of what the following lakes are like and type of fish in them:

Varley Lake
Glacier Lake
Gull Lake
Camp Five Lake
Fry Lake

( e.g area is South/East of Carl Wilson)

Hey Canoeguy, nice read and you had my attention all the way through.
Too bad about Kevin and his tooth and you're having to cut the trip short.
Been there and done that before too.

Back in the early 1980's, my two buddies and I decided to take a weekend
fall trip down Opeongo in search of huge lakers we have heard about.
We each had bought brand new rods with steel line to use. It was early
October, as laketrout closed then on October 12th. First, we couldn't
get his motor to work at the docks and finally we decided to phone Whitney
to rent a motor. As they drove up to deliver it us us, Munchkin got his
motor going. We gave the guy $20 for his troubles.

So now we are 3 happy guys going down Opeongo in search of big lakers.
When he hit the islands before going into the North Arm, we stopped on
one of the islands for a nature break. Suddenly, around the corner came
a big boat with motor and headed towards us. He asked if there was a
Ken Born in our group, and I said, yeah, that's me. He reported to me
that there was an emergency back home and I should get to a phone fast
and call home. You can imagine what goes through you mind at this point as you head back to use the phone. So back we motor to the docks to use the payphone.

Mother-in-law had just passed away so my trip was over before it even began.
We decided to put the lines of our new rods in the waters at the dock just
to say we did in fact use them. I was prepared to go home alone as we
had brought two vehicles, but they said no way, so we all went home
together to deal with the unfortunate situation.

BTW hows Kevin doing, I've had the same tooth problem and i'll tell ya NOTHING makes you feel any worse.
As long as the swelling does'nt get out of hand that is. .

Thanx for sharing your adventure, very nice format as well

Thanks for the input everybody, it is much appreciated.
Kevin's doing fine but he had to wait until the beginning of this week to get it fixed (the dentist was on vacation!).

Barry: Thanks a bunch Barry. If it wasn't for you and what you do here, I would never had the opportunity to meet up with these great guys.

Markus: It was great tripping with you too. Hopefully we can meet up in the park again this summer.

Bo: Sorry to hear about your Mother in Law, but I can relate to having a trip cut short for sure.

Raccoon: All of those lakes hold Specks, but we had the most success on Gull when we did a lop through there about 4 years ago on an earlier loop. (http://www.canoeguy.ca/index.php?pr=Spring_2005).

Jeff P. & Sean of Ajax: Sorry I missed you guys too. We will meet in the Park, I'm sure of it.

The slide show and a short movie of the trip will be on the site soon. Kevin has to put the movie together (I haven't the faintest clue how to do that. I just right the trip logs!).

See you all in the park soon!

Algonquin rocks!
