Sec Lake report......I forgot to mention this!!!!!

I forgot to mention that there is still some checking going on in
the interior of Algonquin, especially at Sec Lake, because I was once
again visited by Larry and his partner who I forget his name, who are
either Park Wardens, or something else. But they have the authority to
give out fines for possession of cans and/or bottles as an example, and also
Larry tells me have the authority now to take someone into custody for
breaking park rules, but admitted then he would have to feed them so he's
not keen on doing this.

They came to my site in a pouring rain storm. I recognized Larry right away
and asked if he wished to see my permit. No, he said, I know you already
have one! He did ask to stay under my tarp for awhile to have a
cigarette and we talked about Algonquin Park in general.

So there are still some inspections going on to punish the rule breakers.

Over the years I've been checked at Big Crow and Daisy. What really miffs me is that I've been at the Magnetewan launch watching 3 different groups head out with bait buckets full of minnows and cases full of beer bottles and cans. I wish the park would post someone at the popular access points during the trout peak instead of interior patrols. Stop them at the dock, write the ticket and/or turn them around before they get the chance to break the rules in a permanent and lasting fashion.

Preacher,

I know this sounds annoying, but can you provide exact dates?
If you feel that this is a re-occurring problem, prehaps thru ABR we can make a request of Park officials to monitor said area at your specified dates for said infractions...buckets of baitfish is a real bad no-no. Not just breaking the law, but threatening to destroy a fishery...that's what can happen, with minnows.

During a meeting with Park officials, ABR had asked about enforcement, ABR was asked to provide areas of incidents that we thought were most likely to have violations, and that enforcement would consider putting extra staff in a specified area.

Your comments Preacher would make a good case for a report to be filed thru ABR, to park staff, hopefully, your request to have people at magnetawan dock will be fulfilled.

Clint:

Well, if that is so I have missed them as I only see them on long weekends.
I have camped 100's of times on Sec and sometimes right at the put in where
the one campsite is and I have never seen them, or they have never decided to
check me!

The OPP were up that way last Friday. Don't know what was going on.....

I know there were bear problems at Achray but that shouldn't have had anything to do with the OPP.

Illegal campers on Wet ...

July 9 2008, 10:39 PM

When I was on Wet for the opener we saw a group come in on Friday and set up an illegal campsite on Wet. There is only one site on that lake and we had it booked. It is not the first time I have witnessed this on Wet.

Markus, this is the type of information the ABR needs to know and I should probably cross-post to that site. When we went in we saw Park Wardens at the Sec launch site and I half expected to run into someone on Wet that weekend.

We were camped on Booth several years ago when the noise of a motorboat caught us off guard and lo & behold it was two park wardens checking for permits etc. So if anyone is going to break any regulations, sooner or later you'll get nailed - that's how fast they can come up on you.

The OPP in Petawawa now have a Truck/SUV as of the winter here (was that the vehicle yyou saw? Black/Gold new paint scheme?), I knew it was only a matter of time before they would be in the barron area besides emergency call ins. Don't forget they look for the fishing offences now as much as the CO's do.

Bo I have seen the Wardens not once there this year out of 5-6 trips in. It seems to have leveled off with cutbacks the last few years, but I am more shocked they were just not at the access point like I always see them. Never heard of them checking campsites when Im around like you had. Who knows eh? lol

IMHO- I would like to see a list of the most severe threats (such as introduced species) to the park listed on the back of both the permit sheets that the user has to sign stating that he understands the rules and will relay them to the rest of his group.

This likely has no chance in the real world of today. Maybe 50 years ago it might work. The problems are increased line ups due to visitors not understanding (either faked or real), language barriers (either faked or real). So forget the signing part but keep the list.

At the very least there should be written warnings in key locations.

Many rule breakers are fully aware of their illicit activities and have their excuses all lined up ready for use if caught in the act. That leads to lawyers and money the gov't does not want to spend.

This is a difficult problem that Algonquin (and the world) is loosing.
