Anyone have a solution for Flies and Dogs

Just curious if anyone has or knows of a mixture, potion or any kind of bug dope for dogs.

My Lab (Jakey) isn't bothered by skeeters so much, but those damned Deer and Moose flies just drive him nuts.
The good side is he loves eating them LOL and he's good at catching them as well.

Thanx Mike

Put some insect repellent (it is safe for dogs)in your hands and rub it on you dogs fur. Carefully go around the eyes/ears and mouth, those less haired areas that the bugs like to bite the most.

When I did have a mutt and we tripped, I always rubbed some deet into my hands and spread it on his fur. Just be careful around the eyes and mouth.

A dogs skin is very sensitive, so before you go, try a small test patch on the stomach to make sure that there is no bad reaction.

My dog had a habit off scratching a shallow pit in which he laid down and he didn't seemed bothered by them that much and he also loved to catch and eat them. A pay back for the ones that got him.

Dogs and deer flies

We too have a black lab that is quite fast at catching them (deer and horse flies)and eating them. They drive her absolutely nuts!
From our experience non of the bug sprays or deet keeps the dearflies and horseflies away from dogs or humans. The best we can do is give her a break from the flies either in a lake or in the tent.
A small Giant Tiger screen tent may do the trick.

DeeDee my black lab is similarily bothered and always on the alert
for a snack ( must be a lab trait eh! Just wish she would
have better knowledge of difference between horse/deer fly and wastes/bees

I 100% agree with the swimming and screen tent for a dogbreak.
DeeDee gives it a thumbs up as well and she enjoys my
company in the bug free zone which is alway a good break
for people as well!

On a side note... I have started to use those citonella wrist
bands on DD( avail cheap at the dollar store or Giant Tiger).
Two snapped together and adjusted make a great collar band .
They are also flourescent and helps when it gets dark to
spot/locate the little devil sometimes

Peeps:
A dog lover friend of mine told us about this product

http://www.eqyss.com/pet_marigold_spray.asp

(sorry for posting the link on here; hope it doesn't offend anyone. I have nothing to do with this company!!)

which he puts on himself as well when he walks his dogs in the woods.

We have bought a bottle of it; a few local Pet Stores in Southern Ontario sell it, and it seems to work good. Maybe not as effective as Deep Woods or Off (with high deet concentrations), but it is better for their skin and body and smells a lot nicer. As my friend does, we coat ourselves in it as well when we camp with our doggie.

I am not sure how many pets stores sell it in Ontario, I don't think the Big Chain Pet stores carry it, but some of the smaller ones do.

I purchased a product from PetSmart that is for keeping a number of different kinds of flies off dogs and other pets. There was a spray and also a cream. They both have helped keep the flies off my dog's ears. I don't have the name of the product with me at work.

I saw another brand, again for flies, at a store that catered to horses. Haven't tried it though.

Regarding the use of DEET on your pets: I caught the tail end of an interview on CBC talking about the dangers of West Nile virus to pets. I missed most of it, but the last thing the Dr. mentioned was not to use DEET on your pets fur, because there is a high likelihood that it will be ingested when they lick themselves.

Herbal Remedy

Make a herbal solution with penny royal mixed with essential oils made from citronella or a lemon based herb such as lemon balm. Other plant oils may include cedar wood, eucalyptus, patchouli and peppermint may help provide a wider range of protection.

Just remember your dog's sense of smell is 50 times stronger than yours.
