Cleaning up other people's garbage

http://www.thedailyobserver.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1135944

Disgusting...obviously some people are now seeing The Park as a place to dump their office and household trash.
That really irks me..more than say a careless(or ignorant tripper).

Yeah, it's a serious problem and the fines can't be high enough in my opinion. No matter how high the fines are, they can be higher. Heck, take a page from the Fishing Regs and confiscate the vehicle used in the offence.

I remember a business in the Temagami area that had half a dozen illegal dumping fines levied on them. The owner just shrugs, "It's still cheaper than going to the dump."

As unfortunate as it is to read about this I sure am glad they have that ranger program for teens. Without that many hands, I imagine it would be hard to muster enough staff to clean up a heavy mess like this.

Maybe not a popular view, but I think that cleaning up after other people just enforces the "oh, well" attitude. Why worry when you know someone else will pick up your crap and deal with it? You're not gonna get caught, why worry?

Municipalities are charging to dump this stuff at landfill / transfer stations. The more the charges go up, the more tires and appliances we see in the ditches and in the Simcoe County Forests. Most of a car, in one instance, dumped in a SC Forest, well off the road.

And now Simcoe County has decided to eliminate the bulk waste pickup in 2009. I can't wait to see how the problem explodes.

Poor Junior Rangers....visions of canoeing and camping, out on the water, and it all dissoves into picking up garbage on the sides of the roads.

I can see where you're coming from, but leaving the garbage there won't help either. Not that that's what you're suggesting, but in the meantime i think it's the best solution.

And hell, I'd rather be picking up garbage in Algonquin than being stuck in an office!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get into The Park this weekend, but I'm bringing an extra garbage bag. The cutbacks continue...Last trip in, I was denied a request for a second garbage bag! With the weather predicted as being fair, and no portaging, I should have more energy left over for garbage collecting...hopefully no computers or furniture will be found!

Truly disgusting, anad while I don't hunt, it sure gives all hunters a bad rep.
The ranger program, however, sounds very cool. What a great opportunity.

I was a Junior Ranger in 88, Wade Lake in Cochrane. What a great summer, dont remember picking up too much garbage, but I do recall catching huge specks in Wade. We made $15 a day and didnt care.

JR in Cochrane

August 1 2008, 12:32 PM

I was a JR there, I think it was there, back in '85. The year before they upped the pay from $10/day. Fond memories. Not much camping. We called it loon sh*t lake, 3' of loose muck on the bottom with a deep hole out in the lake. I think the camp leader's name was Doug?

We didn't clean up garbage. We planted trees and picked moss for Abitibi Price.

Ranger Program

This great program has been around for ions. I was at Quetico in '67. We did everything, cleaned portage trails, spilt wood, fought forest fires, and picked up garbage in the campground. I did two interior trips that summer, cleaning trails. Best summer of my life

Preacher, Doug was our boss, is probably still there. We called the lake the same thing, but it was deep along the shore right in front of camp. Lots of big specks caught from the dock. Picking moss?
