This backpack has tons of room, 2 stick slots can be used for your fishing rod and extra paddle. large side pockets have mesh tops.

Good thought but....

August 1 2008, 7:05 AM

One of the guys on my "old timers" team uses this bag and so, although I haven't used it myself, I have had an opportunity to see it up close.

It is a HUGE bag and agree that it would be good for those that port in lots of gear. Also, since it's designed for hockey gear, you know it can take abuse. The straps for the rod and paddle would also be cool, but like all things related to canoe trips the number one thing for me is comfort and this is where it lacks.

The downside is the construction and design of the shoulder straps. They are far too small for the amount of weight the bag is expected to carry. Add the fact that there is no waist belt and IMO this will cause unnecessary shoulder/back pain. Not a big deal if you are carrying hockey equipment from the car to the dressing room, but a different story for any 500M+ portages.

This is a good deal if you are looking to save a few bucks, but I prefer to spend more now, so I can spend my time in the park focusing on the trip and not pain.

Just my 2 cents.

I bought this same bag, I bought it during the winter time from Crappie tire.
I wouldn't recommend it for the canoe in wet weather, as it has many ventilation ports on it(Great for stinky hockey clothing!).
I used it on a backpacking trail. IT was good for carrying a tripod and cameras, it had lots of room. But as Jim mentioned, the way it hangs, makes it a little awkward wearing it(in the summer)...but since it is a bulky bag...it worked pretty good for me, while I was wearing bulky winter clothing and jacket.

I almost forgot...at the checkout counter, it was brought to my attention that the bag I was buying was defective..one seam along the length of the bag was frayed and had become partially separated. The bag was useless, so I had to get another bag..so be careful and give the bag a good inspection..made in China btw.

As a self-admitting gear nut, I wouldn't trust my gear to this pack. Nor my back. All that weight and no hip belt. I'm sure it's great for going from the car to the rink. Pack failure is a nightmare in the bush.

I can’t agree with you more, It isn’t something I would load up with anything heavy or expect to be comfy. But at a price less than the sales tax on a quality pack, it’s not such a bad deal. This old-timer walked km’s to his hockey games (we didn’t have a car) and caddied in his younger days. (It’s probably the reason “I like” portaging ) Cheers Guys, Tom

FYI

The longest portage in the park is about the same as doing 18 holes at the don valley golf coarse in toronto. (Portage would be better if it had girl with beer cart)
