Anybody coming back from the park lastnight who can say if the public wolfhowl was successful?

Taking, my girlfriend, her son, my Mom and brother there in a week and am really hoping they can hear the wolves.

Related, but I often camp in the Maynooth area on crown land lakes. I've always been told there are lots of wolves in the area and in the Spring, the number of deer carcasses plays proof to this. This past weekend I was sleeping in my new Hennessy hammock when I was woken up around 3am to wolves howling all around the campsite. The next evening I was out in my boat and heard one that must've been just on shore but out of sight. The rest of the pack answered from the road, and I managed to get my camera out in time to get a video. I did a call and they replied right back. Very cool experience

I think it's hope for the best. Last night's howl would have no effect on next week's.

Good luck!

No Howling...

Well, my family and I were camping at Pog Lake the last 2 weeks and attended the 100th and 101st Algonquin Park Wolf Howls. Unfortunately, neither one was successful. Last Thursday (Aug 7th) we heard some barking but after talking to Park staff, they were unsure if it was the wolves or someone camped nearby with a dog.

Wolf howls

If anyone is interested in a double howl event - attending Algonquin's Thursday (August 21) howl as well as the howl event put on and hosted by Mike Runtz on the East side near Basin Depot this coming Saturday August 23.

7pm to 10pm: Author, educator and naturalist Mike Runtz leads this moonlight excursion to nearby Basin Depot in Algonquin Park in search of the elusive sounds of howling wolf packs. Meet at the Davenport Centre for a slide show presentation on wolf biology and social behaviour. We will then head into Basin Depot and hopefully get a wolf pack to howl for us. It's a 20km drive into Algonquin Park, so you will need transportation. Also, dogs are best left at home since their barking can discourage wolves from howling.

The howl this past Thursday (Aug 21st) was successful. Pups responded and then the adults pretty much immediately after the interpretor's howl. They tried a bunch more, but didn't get another response.

On a related note, while driving home on Friday I had a wolf run across the road in front me. It was broad daylight, approx. 1:30 pm. Wasn't even in the park, it was on highway 60 between Dwight and Hillside. I saw it come out of the trees and then right across the road, didn't pay any attention to vehicles, I had to hit the brakes, and the car behind me passed me without even seeing it. At first glance I thought it was someone's dog, but it was no dog.
