Your opinion: Rosebary or Clydegale

Hi folks,

Since you've been so helpful in the past, let me throw this one at you. I'm going with a group in Sept. that wants to stay put for 3 nights. I want to select a lake with lots of daytripping options that none of us has been to before. The front-runners are Rosebary and Clydegale. What are your thought/personal preferences?

Never been to Rosebary yet, but I have been to Clydegale -- absolutely GORGEOUS lake. Me and a friend stayed on the lone island site in the large "bowl" part of the lake. It was so secluded (no other sites in the whole area) and peaceful... we had many loon families land and go through this area all weekend... and the shape of the shore/tree line provides for some incredible echoes -- late nite silence broken by a loon calling out in the distance, resonates and echoes around the bay. Was a treat to fall asleep to that each night.

Not too many daytrips from Clydesgale.....only to Madawaska Lake unless you
portage pack to Pen.

Rosebary gives you more options...Tim River, Floating Heart, and down
Longbow to series of lakes down at that end.

Rosebary wins hands down compared to Clydesgale!

Clydegale

Never been to Rosebary yet, but the southern most site, the Island, on Clydegale is really nice and quiet. It's a bit of a paddle to get there, but worth it, as no one else will be around. If I remember right, the water around the entrance to the site is really shallow, so you can walk a long distance out as well to swim.

Rosebary has nice beach campsights on the north end. With the amount of rain the Tim should be no problem. I've seen Moose at the mouth of the Tim at Rosebary on the west side (the campsite at the location is also good). There may be some trout opportunities on the south side of the lake.

How long a paddle is it from the access point to Rosebary Lake? We have a little one now so travel times have to be quick!

Thanks folks. We've officially decided on Rosebary. I spoke to friend recenly who did a 10-day trip across the park from west to east and he said water levels on the Tim are up and there were no beaver dams on the stretch they covered. I'm psyched to check out those beaches I've heard about!

I'm going to say that it's probably around 4 hours paddling time from the landing to Rosebary. It depends on your paddling style, how you handle the twisting and turning, how you do the short portage, etc, etc, etc.

This isn't the twistiest part of the Tim River, but one section of it is a bit of a meander. The portage is short, but very steep on the east side.

There's more discussion about Rosebary in recent threads here on AA, and I know Mike posted some good pics of the portage's descent...try doing a search for "Rosebary"....lots of info and those pics should come up.

Just got out of Rosebary fri., 5 days nice trip a little wet though! It took 6 1/2 hrs. both in & out 3 adults 2 kids 2 canoes, on the way in mon. we pulled over 5 beaver dams & squeezed through 3 more , on fri. coming out we paddled over all but 2 the Tim r. was up almost a foot. Rosebary is a great trip as long as the Tim r. has water, the 2 sites to the north seem the nicest but we stayed on the eastern site a little sloppy but fine, a short paddle and your into Longbow l. where the Tim r. empties, at the portage we found some of the best berry picking i've ever had maybe in sept. you'll reap the same bounty! enjoy!!

The beach is a little small this year, with the water levels

D'oh....yeah, wasn't thinking that the beach would be a wee bit smaller than in other years.

So glad to see you sticking to the "no white socks with sandals" rule.

Sock and sandles

August 14 2008, 11:29 AM

Thats my bud Kurt, and my dad, We discovered many years ago that gauranted you will get wet feet, so just wear your teva sandles. When it gets colder on the toes throw on a pair of socks, and tada.... warm dry feet, and no packing anything extra than a pair of socks (while maybe a pair or 2 for back-up) Remove that pair of runners and you have room in your pack for one more bottle of Whiskey!
