My 11 year old , Mackenzie, and I just got back from a fabulous weekend on Pinetree Lake. The 1885m portage was not as bad as I thought it might be. No rain (YAY!), no fish (BOO!!). We saw a hawk, a great blue heron, frogs, toads, an otter, loons, and chipmunks.

What a beauty of a lake it is. I would go back again just to do more exploring. The ONLY thing I didn't like about the lake is that even 4km in, we could still hear the big rigs booting down the highway at times.

I have to really give a big salute out to Mackenzie for the fabulous job he did on the portage in and out of the lake. I have been with others on shorter portages and with less gear that griped about everything. The two of us really enjoyed the Father / Son time we had this weekend and can't wait till we get to do it again.

I will post a trip log soon with some photos. Until then, I hope everyone else had a fantastic long weekend....

Sean,

I think you scored big time with this weekend, probably unmistakenly the best weekend of the summer. Its good to hear these stories where the kids share the same enthusiasm as the parents in trekking because too many kids sit in front of the telly or computer for countless hours at a time.

Hey Sean ....

I'm glad to hear you had such a great weekend. I was at the cottage this past weekend, having returned late last night, and you are right, the weather was fantastic, and like Harry said, probably the best weekend weather this summer. To bad its now time for "back to school" Oh well, I guess all good things must come to an end.

I'd love to be able to plan a father and sons get together in the future... you know how the boys like to meet other boys.. especially in the bush and the Dad's.. well the Dad's like to share... time.. together and stuff. Just a thought for next summer perhaps. Sounds like a wonderful trip.. congrats.

too bad about the highway noise. I never heard any when I was there, lucky I guess.
Great to hear you had a fun time...did the put-in onto Pinetree lake provide you with some challenges?
They should just get rid of that logjam!

We made our way from Pinetree to Norway/Sunday Creek access last fall. The low maintenance portage after Pinetree was more like bushwacking. There were a lot of trees down and overgrown brush. If you are passing that way build in some extra trip time. Yes, Pinetree was a fine lake. I believe you can hike the cross-country ski trail from the shore.
