Western Uplands in a Day October 19 2008, 4:58 PM

Thanks for all the hiking advice! Despite the warnings, we risked all and hiked the trail on Saturday. We started at 7am, passed Maggie L. by 10:30, had a couple lunch breaks, and completed the hike at 2:45. FYI, traffic was non-existant, and the trail was in great shape. I would recommend this trail to anyone who can walk fast for extended periods of time. We brought 3L each of water each and didn't have to use the purification system or any of the overnight gear we'd packed.

We had a great day.

Cheers,
Dave

Day trips are great! When you need to get away for a day and away from it all, this is just what the doctor prescribed. I have the best park around for day trpis, Gatineau Park. I can hike for days without seeing another soul, if you choose the right trails, the unmarked ones that is, this can be paradise.

Day trips can be done here year round, and only minutes away.

That's an awful lot of hiking in a single day with little room for error. If you're an avid hiker who routinely is out it's much easier but if you're not in the best condition it will take a heavier toll on you, physically.

I did a similar day hike of 20 miles on the Appalachian Trail down here in one day with a couple other folks. One wasn't in the best of shape and was able to do it but she was obviously hurting after about 12 miles and I expect she spent the next day on the sofa! The topography has a huge impact...if you're doing elevation changes all the time it really takes a toll but if you're in a relatively flat or glaciated area it takes some of the up and down out of the equation.

I much prefer canoe tripping but hiking is a blast as well. Kudos to you for the successful completion of a big loop!

My friends are obviously all in super human shape.....actually, I think they took the warnings as a challenge.
Can't say that I blame them. More power to them for completing it.
