Returned last night from Stainless's get-together, on Little Island Lake.
Weather was fine, a tad cooler than normal, with lots of great people attending.

Wow... You guys had an awesome weekend

Great photos

It looks like with the few portages that
some extra fall weather gear might of been included
as the canoe looks almost like a Master Bo load
( mind you this likely would only be the first load )

Or was the bottom 12 inches on the canoe fill with cellar casks

Day Trip

October 20 2008, 12:07 PM

Hey Markus,

Nice pics... Ariana had a good time day tripping with her Dad. She needs a bit of work on her 'Trail Following' (has to learn the difference between the portage trail and a dry creek bed, heh heh) but I am sure she will get it down pat eventually.

Only took us an hour and a half to get back to the truck at Smoke lake. Did the 835 portage in 19 minutes.

Was great to meet up with some new people on Sat as well as some old friends.

You must be from Canada...

October 20 2008, 12:13 PM

Heh heh... I was looking at the pic of Ariana and I leaving in the canoe and it struck me, "If you have to wear a winter jacket, a touque and gloves when you canoe, You must be from Canada..." HAHAHAHA....

The landing/take-out to the portage to Kootchie Lake
Now, if that photo doesn't prove that getting out there even after the leaves are on the ground is a good idea, I don't what will.

hehehe....I think I might be taller than Joan.

Great weekend!

October 20 2008, 8:10 PM

Hey Markus, thanks for sharing the shots!

To all at Little Island, thanks for the fantastic weekend! While it was a bit chilly at night, the fire, company, wine (and MEC slippers) kept me nice and warm!

Thanks everyone for bring so much to the weekend!

Thanks Stainless ..... great choice of a venue .... anyone who's never gone to Little Island, the trip is easy, but nice and evening lights show
Thanks Joan and Jeannine .... my Algonquin girlfriends (and best huggers in the park)
Thanks Dave .... "Mr. One-Liner"
Thanks Arianna & Sean ..... for the visit and for showing me your SPOT
Thanks Markus .... for your wisdom and kindness (and for "letting" Joan give me the hugs)
Thanks Dave .... for the one bag inspiration
Thanks Jeffrey and Andrew ... for the car company, good laughs and single trip portages

and

Swede for the morning Baileys!

Can't wait to do it again. While I had planned on putting the canoe in the garage raptors now, It think I'll wait a few more weeks, in the hopes of another good weather weekend!

Jeff P ... you my Algonquin boyfriend. Yep, nothing like a good hug fest eh? Good for you for not putting the canoe away! Mark and I are definitely going out again in November. Hmmmm, did we not arrange a date for that prime rib dinner Swede is cooking up for us? ... with all our help of course

Hey ShoreBoundAngler, I heard some of us met ya at the launch, it sucks that you couldn't make it.

Swede??? Are ya sitting in your tent right now thinking ... Suckers??!! lol

I'm in an awfully good mood for someone who isn't in the park right now. Weird

Ariana...

October 20 2008, 10:16 PM

Hey Joan,

Tracey and I were already discussing Ariana and I doing a weekend trip next year. If it had been warmer, I am sure we would have planned to stay the night... She likes to come out on these day trips but can get a little crotchity when things are not comfortable enough... I am sure a few portage trips will cure her of that though...

Sorry folks, just to point out, Ariana has only 1 'n'... Yeah, we were weird that way and used 1 instead of 2...

Re: Ariana...

October 20 2008, 10:42 PM

Hey Sean,

That's cool about taking my little buddy out for an interior trip; she'll have great memories for sure and there are so many beautiful lakes to take her to, and please ... eventually teach her to paddle stern ... someone will need to take you out for an interior trip in the future ... while Mackenzie is busy being an NHL star

Bah! she isn't crotchety, she's just verbalizing her discomfort in her own special little way instead of tossing an axe at a pine tree.

I spelled Ariana right! I win!

Good times

October 20 2008, 11:23 PM

I'm glad everyone had a good time. Little Island Lake worked very well for our group - especially the south facing campsite that Markus and Joan picked. - Morning sunshine to melt the frost off the tents and afternoon sunshine so Sean could wear shorts!!

Jeanine, thanks for the 'Burnt Stew surprise' . It was a lot better than dehydrated whatever, I was going to have.
And Swede, a big thanks to you for the porterhouse steak with sauteed mushrooms, onions, and sweet potatoes. I would have been eating 'tube steak' instead. Teresa says you guys were too good to me.

Dave H., I was glad you could make it after all.
Dave, what a way to top off the weekend for you - Go Bills Go!
Jeff P., bought a green laser pointer yet??

Too bad Tomek, SBA. Next time for sure, eh?

That's it for me for canoeing season

Re: Good times

October 20 2008, 11:41 PM

Mike B.,

There were several white water jugs marking rocks in the narrows between Cache Lake and Tanamakoon Lake.
I think it's because the camp on Tanamakoon runs a pontoon boat back and forth through there.

As for the night sky, it was perfectly clear both nights and we did see a couple of Iridium flares. And we saw a ton of other satellites. The moon was quite bright and beautiful rising about 9 o'clock, so we didn't have dark, dark skies.
The winter constellation Orion was climbing it's way up into the southern skies as the night went on - signaling that winter isn't that far off.

It was a great time....A very big "THANK YOU" to Jeannine for the back pain meds...ahhhhhhhhhh!
Need a lighter canoe..or less wine hint hint.
Despite the well packed canoe...it was very well balanced and we had no problems paddling in it.
Look forward to more gatherings next month and next year

LazyFireBurner(Andrew),

Please do not post your own images in my thread. Make your own thread.
You'll notice my collection of images is only 1.5mb in size...not bad, even for dial-up users.
On the other hand, your images are over 5.5mb in size, that with my images, makes this post over 7mb in size.

Please refrain from this practise in the future...Thank You.

Thanks Guys

October 22 2008, 10:12 AM

Thanks Joan, Stainless and Dave. I wish had made it to meet up with you guys too. I should have gotten out of bed and got to the park earlier. It would have given me enough time to get in & out and have enough time to visit. I would have tried again on Saturday but I had work commitments. Next time for sure.

It was great to meet up with Dave, Jeannine and Swedish Pimple. You guys are great people and I wish there was more time to chat with you guys. Dave thanks for not laughing at me too hard when I was struggling against the head wind on Tanamakoon. Looks like I have to practice my solo paddling a little more.

On a side note - On did anyone pick up a large size stainless steel Kleen Canteen on the portage between Hwy 60 and the 190m portage to the pond leading to Tanamakoon Lake? Either that or around launch at Cache lake? I've drop it somewhere in one those two place. Thanks

SBA
