Why not McManus Lake?

October 23 2008, 8:22 PM

Considered it? Sure! Attempted it? Nope! The Petawawa could pretty much take you all the way across the park, albeit through the northern parts exclusively. Are you implying that you want to spend more time making your way through the center of the park?

Wait till Next Year

October 24 2008, 9:36 AM

Racoon will attempt the aforemention journey and travel lakes that have get to wet my paddle
but I will do it the reverse way! South to North is my preference. Am I wrong in this approach?
I ask because I have yet to refer to maps to determine current (is this an issue in the late
summer/fall) and I know many have been in the areas I plan to paddle so advice or
feedack is welcome

Reason
Never been to North Tea but I hope to get there starting at
Grand ( perhaps start Squirrel rapids ). Many be also my last big journey
and will then be need to be content with easier tripping areas.

Anyways
Thinking that the following would be a possible in late 2009:

phase 1: paddle/portage and do resupply at Grand

phase2: paddle portage and hopefully a resupply at White P. ( Aug/Sept would be a
a grand time for a fall WP Express )

phase 3. destination Opeongo via Dickson, Laveille , crow river and then the North arm
where I would do a resupply

phase4: Opeongo to Cedar ( thru BigT, Burntroot,Catfish and then Cedar where I would resupply

phase 5: cedar northwest up thru Cauchons and onward to Kiosk for resupply.

Phase 6: Kiosk to North Tea. I heard there is a great outfitter nearby where I would end
my journey with some TLC/respite . Need to review maps and decide if straight there thru the
big lakes or loop down and then up thru cliub/mouse would be easier solo ?

Now I have some planning for the winter months ( especially if I am bored in China,Jamaica or Cuba)
Likely Capt Morgan and I could devise some plans without leaving shore

One year we went from Kawawamog to Cedar. Down the Nipissing, cross at Robinson/Whiskeyjack and through.

What's your route? If looking at the Nip I'd suggest early in the year to make use of high water.

S to N vs. N to S

I would avoid all cardinal directions in favour of Upstream vs Downstream.

3 week trip

October 25 2008, 6:07 AM

Anonymous,
That sounds like a great trip. That's pretty much how I would do it. Looks like your distances are manageable, and I believe it's all or mostly downstream. I hope you go through with this trip, because I'm really curious to see how it works out. Quite possibly something I would like to do someday. Just need to acquaint myself with some people willing to trip for more than a week, and convince my family that I could be gone that long. Maybe something to do in the summer when the kids are much older (and strong enough to carry all my gear!)

Hi Dave,

This is an awesome trip and one where you'll have quite a few days where you'll see nobody else. The portages aren't too bad even where lightly travelled.

Lots of details on trips done in 2001 (Dano) and 2004 (me) are included in this thread. Those trips started at Access#3, so the route you're looking at from North Tea would overlap from Burntroot on.

Josh's trip in Sept. 2007 is on MyCCR here.

West to East is preferred not only for the current on the Tim and/or Nipissing rivers, but mainly for the prevailing winds. If you want to do the the more northerly crossing via the Petawawa, you have whitewater to contend with and the need for a heavier ABS canoe.

Despite the challenges, we found the hardest part was carrying enough food (get a dehydrator) and finding a car shuttle (get a sympathetic and understanding sister-in-law).

racoon's trip...

October 25 2008, 11:55 AM

*Examines Racoon's itinerary with great interest*

Grand Lake to Merchant uphill 110 m
- most of the trip is actually flat (+or- 10 meters) except for a few murderous looking sections
- Barron-Loonskin portage +50m
- Loonskin thru to Dixon is up and down
- Upstream from Lavielle to Big Crow...that will be a VERY hard day you might want to reserve the campsite half way along (are you really going to try this trip solo?)
- Big Crow to Merchant...the happy isle portage is a bit of a pain but otherwise fine

Merchant to Cedar downhill 125 m
- All down hill...looke like fun
- Maybe head from burntroot through robinson/whiskeyjack and down the nippissing? A little more portaging but the river's wonderful

Cedar to North Tea uphill 50 m
- Up to Cauchon
- Down to Kiosk
- Up to North Tea

ponders
Perhaps do the trip in reverse? Start at North Tea and end at Grand? Grand to North Tea pits you against the prvailing winds the whole trip...and your only sections of significant river or stream travel will be all upstream. The middle third of the trip would be uphill, but what better places to schedule rest days than Catfish, Burntroot, Big Trout and Happy Isle?

My Dream Trip:
1) Opeongo to WP via Proulx, Crow and Lavielle
2) Off to Cedar the long way: Radiant-Hogan-Lamuir-Burntroot and either Nip or Catfish
3) Make my way to NT lake...not sure how since I want to see maple, 3 Mile and numerous others on the way
4) Down to Ralph Bice (looks nasty)
5) Down to MacIntosh-Smoke - Little Coon - Louisa
6) Back up to BurntIsland via Head, Cannisbay, Linda
7) up to Big Trout
8) Down to Happy Isle
9) out again at Opeongo

Now if my compnay (which is doing the longest death rattle in history) could just wait to lay me off until July 2009)

Great Feedback

October 25 2008, 1:02 PM

Seems that the farther start ( North Tea) makes sense and
while there is no outfitter for TCL respite once at Grand
I guess it will be easier to have my sweetheart meetme there
and spend the weekend at Grand in a Wall tent ( maybe the heated one )

Sound good

Started to plan with my 1970 maps as my other newer ones are
elesewhere.

Phase 1: North Tea -> Wilkes -> Kiosk should be an easy start
( if the winds are favourable) I'll plan 3 days to allow for winds
and some extended stay enroute if required .

Phase 2 ( after resupply at Kiosk) Kiosk -> Mink ( been here before)
and then carry on to Cauchons with extended stay at Laurel (3 days to get here and then a day to explore either Carl Wilson or Loxley for some
Speck nourishment. Then to Cedar for resupply.
This should put me at Cedar on Sept 28 (Day 8)

Phase 3: Cedar -> Catfish , Catfish -> Sun fish ( hopefully Catfish
Rapids area), Next day Burntroot for a 2 day stay to allow checking out
Whiskeyjack/Robinson ( hopefull for Rainbow nourishment) , Burntroot ->
Longer, Longer to Big Trout ( Shangrala if available or the Big Island),
Big T to Merchant/Happy Isle and final day out to Opeongo where I'll need to arrange a resupply and 2 day rest ( hopefully resupply via friends or
it might be water taxi delivered to North arm.

This should add another 8 days arriving at the Big O on 5 Sept so I should be at day 16

Phase 4:
First day Big Crow ( been here before ) for first camp, Big Crow -> Laveille, then likely try going to the forks next, ( will need to do Laveille later with a friend and this old lady is likely something not to
fool around with solo and on that future trip I'll likely give
Dickson/Animoosh my last visit)
Then on to White P ( Resupply here would be nice but likely difficult to arrange unless there is a fall WP Express).
Planned Day rest is in order either way

Next stop North branch
Then Barron
Then Carajou
Then Wenda ( easy day and maybe the Wenda cabin awaits with a pre carry
to make next day easy)
Finally at Grand
This should add another 10 DAYS making it day 27

Can't depart till after Aug 19 ( two special events 17 & 19 August
and plans are I should be back for my sweetheart special Birthday
on the 22 Sept.

Looks like this could be a tentative timetable

20 Aug to the outfitter for last bit of luxury
start
Start Phase 1 on 21 Aug and arrive Sunday afternoon 23 Aug at Kiosk

Phase 2: This should end at Cedar on Friday 28 Aug (Day 8)

Phase 3: This segment starts 29 Aug and ends 5 Sept , Saturday afternoon,
at Opeongo North Arm (Full moon (Day 17) )

Phase 4
Part A: Sarts 6 Sept and on Friday 11 Sept hope to be at at WP
even if I have a late departure from Opeongo on the 6th of Sept (Day 23)
Maybe some R&R here if WP Express fall happens and if not resupplied
then at least some downtime/slack in my PERT chart for this trip plan.

Part B: leave WP Sept 13 onward to Grand and expect to arrive at Grand
on Friday 18 Sept , 6 days later (Day 29)

3 days rest and then I celebrate to big 55 with my Sweetheart

Need to review and plan this trip, resupplies and whatever this winter

your thoughts?

October 27 2008, 5:23 PM

Hey Dave (or MattJ, or anyone else with an opinion on this),

As I wrote before, a trip of the length you're proposing is out of the question for me right now. But I have been looking at a route for next summer that covers a good chunk of the park. Any problems with this route?

Begin at Rain Lake (first light)
First night at Misty Lake
Second night at Big Trout
Third night at Robinson or Whiskeyjack
Fourth night at Osler
Fifth night at Maple
Sixth night at Kioshkokwi
End at north shore of Kiosk (arranged pickup by cousin's wife)

High possibility of one extra day built in for rest/slow progress

There are a number of lakes that have been previously stocked with rainbow for study purposes. I am pretty sure Ryan was one. I bet a review of old stocking lists would get the info you want.
