Ice out 2009

Ok, I know it is early, but I've just put my canoe in the rafters for the season, and since Markus (my Algonquin Idol) has put his canoe away for the season, I think it is time to ask the obvious question.

Prelude .......

This year, the ice out, and hence the "AA semi-official start of the season gathering" occurred on Rose Island on Rock Lake from April 25th - 27th. Click here for my report on it. http://algonquincanoeing.blogspot.com/search/label/%22Park%20Opener

My question....... simple (but 2 part).

Part A) When do you think the 2009 "opener" gathering will occur?

Part B) Given that Spring conditions can be dicey, where do you think the gathering should occur?

I for one will be there pending the most unusual and strange of condition (s) and hence offer the following prize.

Correct Date..... like last year a round of beverages provided by moi, handed out in the name of the winner...... Markus won last year and I'm sure will attest that I deliver.

Correct Location .....Gets first pick of their team mate in a snow ball fight (we didn't get to play this past year as the snow was gone.)

To collect your prize you must attend the 2009 "opener," but give me dibs on a tent location!

Considerations in location:

Seeing as it will hopefully be early, and we will be tired after a long winter break:

1. Portaging should be limited (see #2);
2. Dry wood will be an issue so we will likely have to pack in some wood;
3. We're all a year older so might want to be motor boat accessible;
4. Will likely be 1 or 2 nights max, hence the middle of the park is out.

Hope to see everyone sooner, but till then, lets have a bit of fun!

Jeff,

My guess for the date is Apr. 24-26.
As for location, I will go with Canisbay Lake. (Maybe too great a risk of ice because of elevation)

After listening to Al Dork, I mean Gore. the ice out will be sometime in March very soon.

I agree with Stainless give or take a few days.

Negative :-( its all a matter of opinion :-)

A small typo in my last post should of indicated my optimism

e.g. May 2008 may of been interpretted as The lakes will
not freeze .

Anyways... I am still sticking with May...

That way... at least the ground and portages may have more chance
to dry up a bit more..
