Hello Everyone,

I am planning a trip next spring into Big Trout and was wondering if anyone could give me a couple of camp site suggestions on this lake as I have never been there before. Will be coming in from Merchant and really only need enough room for a Tent and a couple of Tarps.

Thanks
Joe

Big Trout in 2009... is a great destination

Perhaps there is no such thing as a bad camp site on BT
( Its like asking is there a bad beer ?)
In both cases, Some are just better than others happy.gif

Hi Joe,

I've never camped on Big Trout but had to stop on one of the island sites last year for several hours due to high winds. What we've done in the past is get feedback like you're doing and then come up with a list of two or three sites to check out. Sometimes you'll find that one man's garbage is another man's treasure so don't hesitate to stop in at vacant sites en route to check them out as well. Usually it takes a two minute leg stretch to realize that the site is not what you want or that it has real potential. We've found some beautiful sites that weren't recommended to us (not like they said "don't go there", they just didn't mention them as good ones) so keep your mind and eyes wide open.

The cool thing about Big Trout is that there are a plethora of sites to choose from and you could probably burn the better part of two days if you wanted to look at all of them! Also, be aware that spring conditions could make a good summer site miserable...sometimes a windbreak is a godsend and a beutiful beach or view is secondary to comfort and safety. Best of luck and enjoy your journey!

Big Trout Sites

November 30 2008, 9:39 AM

Joe, this past summer my wife and I spent two nights on big trout. We paddled in from Otterslide creek and with skies threatening to storm we made a dash for the island site just below the "T" in racoons map. We chose the site on the southwest end of the island and it proved to be a good site to have during the inclement weather. It has a nice stand of white pine, easy water access and is well protected from the wind. The next day which was to be our rest day we decided to pack up and look for a site with better exposure and possibly some rocks to lounge on. We found it quickly with the island just below the "i" in racoons map. The site on the southwest tip was large and wide open, it would not be ideal for a spring trip, as even in mid summer we were pounded by strong wind that funnelled through the narrows of White Trout and pushed two to three foot white caps at us all day. This prevented us from doing any exploring of the lake and fishing that I had looked so forward to. Big Tout is a big lake with tons of sites to choose from, we only saw one other group pass by in two days. Enjoy your trip and be safe.

# 1 site imho is on the island directly below the "i" of B"i"G on racoon's map. the site facing the channel into white trout (?), high up, great views to the NSEW. great site. spent a few nights there in '08. i am told the site on the lake to the north by the rapids (you have to paddle a very wee bit to get to it, first site on your right, not far) is the best in the park.

I also liked that island campsite (under the 'i' in 'Big'). I can't vouch for other sites on the lake, though. But great swimming, good views.

Big Trout campsites

There are several nice sites that make great overnight locations as well as rest or lunch stops.

1 - nice spot where we had lunch but the site was a nice place and we would return if needing a site on the way to or from Longer Lake.

2 - first time through BT, we checked this site out from our canoe seats, which was a poor decision. We only saw the front yard which was OK for a small group and we turned thumbs down. The second time through Big Trout we actually got out and realizxed the site went way back into the woods with plenty of places for tents, tarps, hammocks, clothesline and shade.

3 - where we stopped the first year after passing on #2. There are two sites on this small island and we stayed at the northern site which was a split level spot. The tip of the island had a flat area where we set up our tarp and used the fire pit and left the canoes while back up the hill we found another large flat clearing where we pitched tents and set up the clothesline.

4 - this is an interesting site as it looks like a cliff face that has eroded. Many of you may have seen the dirt face from a distance and thought that it was a dirt patch. In '06 fwe entered BT from the Otterslides and paddled along the shorelin and around to this place and were about to head for site #3 but we saw a rock pier and park supplied steps up the hillside so we stopped. Due to the high winds we were grateful for trees to which we tied the canoes and upon reaching the site we were pleased to see a large flat grassy site with shade and plenty of space. We used this as a layover site and sat out the high winds in comfort.

Plenty of places from which to choose on Big Trout.
