Yes there's a schedule (I'm not sure how far in advance though,) and no, it's not posted anywhere.

Why don't you go post your suggestion on the ABR site? -> www.abrweb.ca

Yuppers...

Maintenance starts sometime after 30 Apr and finishes in the early fall ( Sept/Oct) happy.gif

IMHO... it always appears that my spring trips are not in sync with any MNR scheduel.

My spring trips always finds blow downs and snags.. But then
again if Portaging and Canoeing was easy ....

They would of called it something like HOCKEY or FOOTBALL!!

As I understand things, portages marked in red are cleaned out each year, low maintenance portages are marked in black and are cleaned out once every 5 years.

I don't think the information is posted anywhere as to when the portages are fixed up which is too bad. I would certainly like to take advantage of the opportunities to explore some of the more remote areas of the park just after the portages had been cleaned rather than just before. Can you imagine how cluttered a portage must get after 5 years of neglect? happy.gif

Some maintained portages are cleared out more than once a year... some every other or less. Unmaintained portages are cleaned whenever everything else is done. I put some notes on my map about when some unmaintained portages were last cleared.

Hey Randy, I'm going to immortalize that quote, if you don't mind, with proper attributions.

they would have called it something like HOCKEY or FOOTBALL!!"

Just a thought, but we've got poetry, pictures, triplogs... I guess it could get messy, but a quotation section about algonquin/tripping would be cool, too. There are times where I seek out these sorts of clever one-liners for inspiration or as a clever way to describe what tripping is all about, and everyone seems to eventually adapt them into their forum signatures.

On most of my spring trips to Algonquin, I encounter all sorts of obstacles on my way to the "chosen spot". I don't mind portaging the "black" trails as they ofer, on most trips, seclusion, isolation and peacefulness that can only be attained when there is nobody else areound for miles.

Dano this is definetly why I havnt posted it as a suggestion on ABR. I always go for seclusion and enjoy meeting like minded trippers but for the most part just like getting away from it all. All of it. I think most of us seek this. If everyone knew it may just draw them into my hideouts and of late I seem to see more and more black lines. Some bad some not so bad. My wife actually spurred the question really. She really doesnt tolerate the unpredictable like I. Never has she not met a challenge better than anyone I know but to convince her to spend five to seven on black lines she really would like to have an idea of what she is getting into. I can deal with a blowndown forest if you know what I mean....

Portage and Trail Maintainence

December 19 2008, 3:23 PM

My wife and I went in through Rain Lake last year and when we were at the park office, a Park Ranger happened to be there. We were going into Cranebill, and asked him about the low maintenance campsite on the lake, and the portage west out of the lake. He told us that through Pts 2,3,4, they check the portages and sites 3 times per year.
