Canoe Building 2009(Winisk) - Mike Burns

AA personality and friend Mike B is at it again, this time building a family sized cedar strip canoe!

Mike has sent along the following text and photos for me to post;

I have been busy that last 4 weeks making my new canoe called Winisk. As many fellow AA'ers know I made my first cedar canoe last year. The Osprey was great but I also wanted a tandem cedar stripper. The Winisk will be great for longer Algonquin trips on larger lakes and will be able to handle larger loads and room for a dog as well. Of coarse this one will not be seeing to many rocky rivers or be ramming those dams like Markus and I did many times on Birchcliffe Creek last May.
The canoe is all made from scratch. I am installing the strips stapleless using mostly bungee and wedges as needed to hold strips in place. Slow going now with only able to glue one strip at a time now.

Thanks for checking it out and will have more pics to post as it goes along.

Cheers
Mike

I am in awe of Mikes wood working ability! Unreal! I am sure it will be every bit as beautiful as the last solo canoe, If not more beautiful!

Keep up the good work!

4 week wow!

Hey Mike, thanks for sharing through Markus!

4 weeks eah..... and I assume this is in your spare time. Wow can you say fast. I followed your project last year and commented you should start a business; now I'm convinced you have a calling.

Funny though, I thought I started my spring trip planning early, looking over old gear and stuff in January; you seem to have redefined this art and get a new canoe out of it also happy.gif

Way to go and keep us up to date!

Nice work Mike. Looks like you have the BUG.

Nice progress after only four weeks.

What will it weigh out at?

I got the kevlar canoe book this Christmas. Some interesting stuff in there.

Beauty shop, I am jealous . Keep the updates coming.

Very nice progress ! She will be as beautiful as the Osprey you built last year. You have quite a skill.
At least your keeping your boat building projects small and not getting to carried away as I did and start to build a 32 ft trimaran, two years in and two to go !

It's all Mind over matter,You don't mind it don't matter!

Can't wait to see it when the finish is applied. The wood looks nice now but when you start to slap on a few layers that just seems to make the grain do a three dimensional pop! I wish I had the time, space and perseverence to accomplish such a task - I'm truly envious! Great work.

*turns green with envy...again*

Terrific looking woodwork Mr Mike. I couldn't build a popsicle stick much less a canoe wink.gif
What are you using for a form? Did you build one especially for the canoe? Or is there another way to build them?

thanks doods

Hey guys....thanks for all the comments.

Karior: I purchased plans for making the Winisk and the forms are traced on MDF board and cut out.

PaPaddler: The cedar was all white in colur this time. I ordered it from T.O. and I stressed on quality of wood and was disappointed with wood received.Get what you get! I had some strips left over from my Osprey to make a contrast near the gunwalls. I think it will look good once done. Yes, time is needed for such a project. 150 hours min....and more like well over 200 for me.

Dave H: Thank you sir. I'm not as nuts as you to build a ship dood! (:>) I want to come out to check out your trimaran this summer!

Sal: Yep, got the bug...I decided to build another right after this one as i wanted a darker version...will drive to T.O this time and pick up the wood i want. Well, 4 weeks is after the Stems were made. That was a few weeks making those, taking my time. Not sure on the weight. At 17' 6" long, I would say 55 to 60lbs. Not the lightest but I made the strips 3/16" thick and will take it easy on the wood trim to keep it the lightest. Kevlar project would be interesting fer sure...let me know if you start such a canoe!

Racoon: WhiteWater canoe? Funny guy!

Jeff P: Spare time it is. With slow up at work (auto-sector) here at Windsor i have more time to build. I still have a job this week anyways...next week? My calling would not pay the bills! I wish though, that would be sweet!

I thank Markus for posting pics for me.

I'll get the Man to post more when ready to glass the out hull.

Cheers
Mike

I guess you gotta justify that line of clamps I see in the first picture.

Way to go!
