Personally I like start the evening off with a little ditty by the "Piece and Quiet Duo", followed up by the well known "Loon Ensemble", and then ending with a good smash of the ever present "Cricket Quartet."

But that's just me...wink.gif

at dusk the sounds of a rare "whip r will" give me a rush,, "spring peepers" are cool at a distance,,, and lastly listening to many "warblers" in the hard woods gives me the chills.. or perhaps a thunder storm. leave the radio at home unless you have ear buds!!!!
take a good book with`ya!!!

I brought a radio on one of my first trips. Never again, though. To be honest, there was just so much to enjoy around the campsites and lakes that I didn't really sit and listen to music.

Also, it really kills the mood for some people, and I'd hate to think I'm the one responsible for taking away something sought by many fellow trippers (peace and quiet).

Just the guys?

no beer, no music other than what nature provides. nothing can beat listening to beavers chattering to each other, or the cry of loons.

don't really understand why anyone would want to bring artificial sounds with them, personally. i've had to sit and listen to people across the way as they played their mini-television, and it was damned annoying. when they finally shut it off, they then proceeded to talk really loud about their troubles at work. why were they out there? they coulda/shoulda stayed at home for that kind of "entertainment", and not imposed it on others who are trying to escape it.

I'd have to chime in with the others...for me nothing beats the song of the loon, or better yet a pack of wolves...I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with bringing your own tunes...but for me, I can listen to the ipod anytime...loons and wolves are harder to come by where I live happy.gif

I have never considered bringing music into the park. I have, however, purchased an Algonquin Suites CD which I listen to at home, if that counts.

I agree with Swedish Pimple, the sound of a nearby Whippoorwill is a real treat.

And of course the haunting calls of a barred owl, maybe even two of them, 'talking' to one another.

Or, the group howl of a pack of humans trying - hoping - to get a response from Algonquin wolves. happy.gif

noise!!

There is only one thing that I hate more than to listen to somebody else's music, and that's to listen to somebody "trying" to sing and "scratch" a guitar on a peaceful Algonquin evening.

even worse?

February 8 2009, 5:21 PM

Anybody ever kept awake by a "drum circle" of yahoos playing bongos and whooping it up?

I brought a walkman with headphones once, about twelve years back. I found that I'd rather listen to man-made music in the car to and from AP. I do occasionally sing along the portage trail, though, when the canoe yoke digs into my shoulders and neck. The most common tune is the Beatles' "I'm so tired".

I'm not one for music in the interior either.
However, I have been fortunate to experience live music, in good taste played near.
One time on Male Lake, someone played a rendition of Vangelis's 'Le Singe Bleu', with a trumpet.
The less than perfect rendition was accompanied by the most excellent acoustics of the lake. The reverberations were stunning.

Another time I brought my employers to The Park, and one of them plays the flute, the harmonious nature of the flute, coupled with loon calls almost brought tears to my eyes, the sound of the music was very moving for me.

Now if you ever heard me play a flute, you'd be crying too, but for a very different reason! This is why I play it when no one is around...so terrible I am! LOL! happy.gif

Natural sounding instruments sound good outdoors, they sound even better if it is of the classical nature, IMHO.
I truly do prefer the music of nature though. Still it was a pleasant surprise on both occasions.

Next to the sound of Loons, I would say the White Throated Sparrow is my next favorite. http://www.naturesound.com/birds/audio/whtthrt.ram

Flavor of the month: Lady Gaga, cranked.

I may bring my Dynamo radio on game nights (Sens) and pickup the Petawawa station that carries their games. Luckily I won't have to worry about bringing it post April 11th, ditto for the Pens/Leafs (and maybe even the Habs) fans out there too

While I often enjoy the quiet of an evening campfire, if the kids are around then a proper campfire has to include songs, skits, and ghost stories. Most campfires will absolutely require the singing of:

Fires Burning
Tom the Toad
Bye Bye Long Johns
Pink Pyjamas
Taps

and many others.

I see now what you are getting at Barbara. I looked at my post in Firefox.
Can't even tell that there was a link there. I used those ready made embed commands that come with every Youtube video.
Perhaps they only work with webkit enabled browsers?
Weird that firefox wouldn't show it though.

Anyhoo the link above, is of a video someone made, using the music of Vangelis, specifically the same song I heard on Maple Lake, trumpet only though, of "Le Singe Bleu", or translated into English; The Blue Monkey
